jkittlesen
Despite his erratic play which has made him look amateurish at times, Woods made an astonishing $50 million in the past 12 months. Almost all of that money came from endorsements with Nike being the biggest contributor to Woods' pockets. It remains to be seen how much longer Nike will stand by Woods, any guess ? wbealsd
If Tiger doesn't recover his competitiveness within the year, I seriously wonder how long he'll continue to draw the crowds. If he's not able to reverse the downward spiral he's in, the "Tiger Only Fans" will likely quit showing up and most "hard-core" fans will appreciate all the young talents that have overtaken him on the course. Tiger dominated golf for so long he deserves and has earned every endorsement he has. No problems here with him still taking in cash. No knock on Tiger's accomplishments, at all. In his prime he was the undisputed champion of his era, but that era is past. He still draws crowds and generates revenue and that's what matters to the companies that are paying him. The difference is in his off course role as an endorser and "role model." I honestly don't know how that will work out for him long term, once he's no longer a serious competitor but I suspect it won't help. For now, a lot of people hope to see him regain his status as a champion, but time marches on. Sluggo42
The sad part is how he sort of self destructed, right before he was able to overtake Jack. Had he just kept his nose clean and his head correct, he might have had a chance to get the records he wanted. Now it's all about whether or not he can contain his ego, and learn to play within himself, instead of feeling the need to prove he is still as long as the kids... He certainly has the tools, but battling his ego has always been his Achilles heel TSr2 on tensi blue stiff Speedzone 3-wood on Tensi blue S Epic Max 5 and 7 woods on HZRDUS Reg flex Paradym 9 wood on HZRDUS reg flex P770 / P790 combo set on Ventus R-6 shafts 6-AW T22 Denim Copper 54°, 58° on Kinetic X Trajectory ER3 or, E.A.S. #4 (“Fang” or “Adele”) ProV1x, or, Maxfli Tour X .Org 14 cart bag Adidas Tour 360 , or Sketcher shoes
revkev
Well you'll always get comments by bringing Tiger's name up. So here goes. When was the last time that Arnold Palmer won or contended in a golf tournament? How about Jack? They do commercials and make a pretty penny from golf. Are they not worth it? How about John Daly? By all accounts he's a train wreck where ever he goes - he lives in my community and there are countless stories. He's an absolutely terrible player any more who does not have nearly the lifetime numbers of the aforementioned guys and yet he remains a draw of sorts - if only to see what will happen to him next. You are worth exactly what someone will pay you. It's not for us to determine and I'm not going to play the game of begrudging someone else what they make particularly someone who is beyond argument among the top 2 or 3 golfers ever to play the game. @ Sluggo, that may be your take and it's certainly the popular take but in my opinion Tiger's putter deserted him before the self destruct button hit. It became noticeable at the PGA he lost to YE Yang. Prior to that he was bullet proof but in that final round he was unable to hole a few key putts and then suddenly he tried to force an iron in too close to compensate and it all vanished. It was no different from Snead, Palmer and Watson, the putter deserted him in his early/mid 30's. Everything else that happened masked it. To be sure he would have won more and perhaps another major or two but he was never catching Jack after that day. Jmikecpa
As long as the media keeps covering Tiger and every shot that he hits Nike will be there. How many stories and breaking headlines did I see because Tiger committed to play this week's tournament.....a lot. Don't remember seeing alerts on any of the other players in the field. RookieBlue7
Tiger, even had he equaled Jack in majors or passed him by 1 still wouldn't be the GOAT. Jack averaged a second place in majors for a decade.... Then did it again a second decade. And Jack did it against bonafide hall of famers. Seve, Arnold, Jack, Player, Watson, Trevino, Miller, the list goes on and on and on.... Tiger did it against Mark OMera and Chris Dimarco and when he didn't win he vanished. Never came from behind, etc. Tiger won a lot, but it was against weak fields. They were scared of him. You think Seve or Jack or Player or Watson or any of those guys were scared of each other? No way... Tiger will still win some tourneys. I'm a huge Tiger fan. Always have been. I thought the same thing, he'll pass Jack and be the goat. Right until I started actually looking at things from an unbiased perspective. But does he deserve the money? Why not? They're still selling product off his back. Guys aren't buying equipment that Rory plays or that Spieth plays just because they play it (with the exception of their inspired by, victory putters that are more collectables than anything). Tiger alters the market any time he changes a product. Ever seen a shaft's resale go through the roof when anyone else put one in play? Tiger had that effect on the Blueboard, the Tour AD DI, etc. you could buy them for nothing when he wasn't playing them. He puts one in play and you pay double for a pull and full msrp for new. The new Martix TPHDe? Could get it below MAP, he started testing it and through the roof. It's the Tiger effect. And it's real. As far as the role model thing, he can still be a role model in the only sense he should've been before, ON the course. Aspire to play to his level of greatness kids. But off the course, he shouldn't be an influence to anyone from Joe public.Any parent that points to a pro athlete or a kid that looks to a pro athlete, one they'll never meet or even talk to, as a role model for their behavior and how they should love life?
