knightsofnii
I didn't want to quote and end up reposting all the pictures and such, but: Weihenstephaner Weissbier Dunkel (dunkelweissen) is absolutely hands down my favorite beer. If you ever get the chance to visit Bavaria, do yourself a favor, go right on past the Hefeweissen and request the dunkel-weissen. Don't let the "dark" of this beer scare you off!!! It is basically Hefe with all of its good elements enhanced!! I would agree with its golfability though. The large 500ml bottle is not friendly to the cart drink holders, plus this stuff can foam up with a few bumps. It is not something you will likely find on tap, as it is most often bottle fermented. srooch2, cksurfdude, pib and 1 other 4 Quote RADspeed 10.5, Evenflow Riptide CB 6.0s Bio Cell 3/4w, PXV 6.0s; AMP 3h 19deg Aldila RIP R. cksurfdude
There are a few fun places near me that have expanded their craft beer menu; with an effort to include local and regional microbrews. Last night, after a pretty good but not burn down the barn IPA from Stone (almost all the other IPAs this place has are Easy Coast hazy and juicy), I tried... COFFEE COCONUT ICING ON THE CAKE ”This rich and decadent imperial milk stout is layered with silky flavors; Kenyan Kieni AA arabica beans, prized by our friends at Sey Coffee for their brightness and berry-like complexity, mingle with toasted coconut flakes and vanilla for a deeply satisfying stout that shows each element in a harmonious balance.” Yep. That's the name and that's their description! The brewer is Grimm in Brooklyn, NY. I have to agree with "deeply satisfying"! This beer is dark, tasty, aromatic but not bitter nor sweet, tasty, hoppy but smooth, tasty, ... (oh.. Did I already say "tasty"? My wife took a very cautious mini sip and then exclaimed loudly, "Yum! This is a dessert beer!") You definitely taste a hint of each of those flavors (that I would normally otherwise scoff at as "that s*** doesn't belong in beer!"). ABV 11.5 (be careful!) IBUs are up there, I forget the number, but the Imperial process makes this really smooth and really drinkable. Kenny B and JohnSmalls 2 Quote WITB of an "aspiring" play-ah ... cksurfdude
See??!!?? Told ya.... (..and I have my contributions into Untappd to prove it!) So about a month ago now .. but on a Thursday eve .. wandered into one of the fine local eateries that offer a nice selection of craft brews of various types; the taps are, of course, on a constantly changing basis. So in the spirit of NBT, and in a departure from the usual search (more like: holy grail quest) for a "better" IPA, I opt to try a Russian Imperial Stout - which, full disclosure - I've sampled the type before, but .. in this particular case .. it is "..brewed with organic raw cacao nibs and ugandan vanilla beans"... No kidding! ..zoom in on the lower-right of the menu and check out the description of Root & Branch's "Big White Cloud". Anyway, you can see I got through this one rather easily. The chocolate and vanilla tones were noticeable but no way over-powering; no sticky sweetness but really a nicely blended, nicely balanced delight of flavors. But totally a "dessert" beer. So I had to Love it. On the street out of our golf course, the only bar is an Applebee's. My wife and I frequent it a lot. We know all of the bartenders and managers. They don't have many taps, and beers get rotated through them. Right now they have Bud Light, Coors, Blue Moon, and 5 IPAs. They used to have a Sam Adams seasonal, but it's been replaced by another IPA. Who needs 5 IPAs when there are only 8 taps??? cksurfdude and silver & black 1 1 Quote “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Yeah, I used to be able to ask for an IPA and it would most likely be dark, hoppy and bitter. And good. Now..... I have to ask about "juicy" or "citrus" or "floral" or etc. etc. It's literally getting harder and harder to go out and find the type of IPA I prefer.... silver & black, Kenny B and JohnSmalls 3 Quote WITB of an "aspiring" play-ah ... As you know, I am not particularly fond of IPAs, and not at all fond of citrus, floral ones. Hop Valley Citrus Mistress from Springfield, OR tastes like dishwater to me, and it's been on tap at that Applebees for a year now. Some IPAs are certainly better than others, and I will occasionally have one but I still prefer a stout/porter to any IPA. cksurfdude 1 Quote “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

(Like disco music and garish clothing were back in the 70s .. hopefully this current fad will fade, too....)
