GolfJunkie302
I am seriously worried about the state of my putting. I noticed in the last two rounds that I cannot, for the life of me, make a three foot putt. I get utterly psyched out standing over a short one and I feel completely uncomfortable. In the last two rounds, I missed a one foot putt, a six inch putt, and countless others under five feet. This is not normal for me. Is it just mental? Something in my stroke? I refuse to believe I have the yips so please help me! tony@CIC
So I changed up my grip and have had great results over the short term. I reversed the way I grip my club - being left handed the old grip was left hand low now it's right hand low. The benefit is that it took out much of the arc in my putter swing. Maybe just give it time? Sent from my SM-T580 using MyGolfSpy mobile app I use the claw and it took me a few weeks before it became second nature. I would hang with it a while longer and use the two tee drill. Work on putts from three to five feet and place the tees just wide enough for your putter to pass through. Kor.A.Door
It's totally mental. When you can't get comfortable to putt a short one it's all mental, try switching to a different putter for a round or 2, if you are using a face balanced putter try one with a slight arc, or do the reverse if you are using a slight arc already. Also, change the routine for a bit on the short ones, don't take as much time, just set up and make the stroke, the longer you take the more thoughts that can come into the brain. This will be weird, but remember in the movie Major League 2 where the catcher couldn't throw the ball to the pitcher, and he started quoting the playboy articles then he was able to throw the ball back to the pitcher. Try that. Another trick, think about breasts, or anything to take your thoughts away from the putt. I know it sounds weird, but it works. You need to get out of your head. downlowkey
It is essential that your grip pressure remains consistent; be mindful that your shoulders move the putter, everything else is merely along for the ride. Practice your stroke without a ball for 5 minutes. Then add the ball but just roll putts without a target. You'll be stroking putts right in the center again within 30 minutes. Sent from my SM-T580 using MyGolfSpy mobile app Since this is a new thing you are probably just compensating for the previous miss which causes more misses. Close your eyes and stroke a few putts or focus on rolling the ball over a spot on the green. If you hit that spot, you don't have a stroke issue. Just make the stroke you know you can make and you will get by this. be mindful that your shoulders move the putter, everything else is merely along for the ride. What moves the putter is a personal choice; you choose to use shoulders. You can use arms and no shoulders (Stan Utley method), left side (Dave Stockton method), or right side (Tiger Woods method). revkev
This is another one that I wanted to respond to but was away. It is probably mental, if not it will be because your eyes are in the wrong spot. If it's the eye the nag you are probably too far from the ball. Get your eyes over the ball. If it's not just try anything different and you will snap out of it. I do eyes close or left hand low - either works.
