Proper Golf Ball Position

Recommended Posts

It is actually not too basic, as there are several variables, like where your swing bottoms out. It also depends on what type of shot you want to hit. High, low, in the middle, fade (farther back), draw (farther forward)... Plus, golf ball location is different for different clubs (generally farther back for irons, farther forward for the driver). You get the idea. It's not the same for everyone.

Junkie explained it better than I could have but he is 100% correct. Despite what all the gurus say there is no etched in stone proper way to swing or hit a golf ball

Golf junkie hit it on the head.  Knowing where your swings low point (bottoms out) is crucial in understanding where the best ball position for your swing is.  And like Golf junkie again said moving the ball forward and backward will change ball flight, draw/fade, etc.

Now if we could only get the instructors to adjust their teaching. Both instructors I had would give me the standard answer vs taking into consideration what Junkie said.

Now what you said is correct for some folks on the whole. I will agree 100% on what you said about where the club bottoms out and for some folks changing ball position

Now this is where we get the variable or at least for me. To hit draws and fades I manipulate the club face from open to closed. Now that is just me and not etched in stone or anything. Now I mostly hit a fade and do not manipulate the club like I used to because my hands do not work like they used to due to me getting older.

You're right. Ball flight has mostly to do with swing mechanics and face position, but I do think positioning the ball differently does have some affect on it. Different strokes for different folks...

If I play back from center with my irons, I always hit about 1" behind the ball on full swings.

That just means one really simple thing and read closely--- Your swing is too steep for that ball position in other words you bottom out earlier than others do- No problem since obviously you know the proper ball position for YOUR swing

He played everything off his left heel and just moved his right foot back to adjust for each club.

Yup very simple.

Notice how his right foot stays lil further back off his alignment. Eliminates the fade. Or it does for me lol

I tried the Hogan placement I cannot place the ball there I hit too far behind no matter how much work I do and practice I cannot do that.

Just curious as to your weight distribution when setting up for your shorter irons.  Are you hitting behind the ball on the shorter clubs or longer clubs?

I would hit behind with every club. If I put the ball dead center of my stance I don't hit it fat. No matter how much I try to think 60/40 I am a 50/50 stance. Played the other day and put the ball dead center, which is where I strike it best, and had my best iron round in a while.

It's so not the same for everyone that I play the ball back for draw and up for fade. :)

I've read instruction where it says to move the ball position back through the bag, others where it says keep it the same.

Ball position is huge but clearly it varies based on swing type and other factors. Consult your teacher and or individual trial and error as results may vary!

Concept is really good, but I tend to hook the ball so this doesn't work in my favour
