carfig
Sure this question has been asked before, but new member of the forum. I have only been fitted once for my clubs and this was from a Pro at a small golf shop in PA. No launch monitor, electronics, etc...he watched my shot shape, changed my shaft, had me hit more balls, tweaked, etc. Got a beautiful set of clubs, woods, irons, wedges still use them today...well that was about 8 years ago and I am ready to switch out. (I did upgrade my woods at a demo day about 5 years ago) I want to spend the time and money and get everything dialed in as much as possible, I have several options of places but am not sure where to go. Do any of you have experience at GolfTech or Golf Galaxy...or should I find a local pro and get it done there? skyryder
If you truly want to get the most for your money, I would look for a Club Champion or Tru Spec. They will have the most options as far as shaft selections/club heads. GolfTec only has three or four different club manufacturers and only the shafts that are offered as OEM for those clubs. While I like supporting my local pro, if they don't have a monitor or even better an indoor bay, you are really not giving yourself the best options for clubs/shaft combos available to you. As an outlier, I would also take a look at some of the Direct to Consumer companies, especially Sub70, they do a pretty good job of fitting their clubs to your needs. cnosil
Thanks, never heard of Club Champion or Tru Spec....There is a Club Champion in town...will check them up.Definitely Read up on these fitters. People often complain that the results aren’t worth it because they only recommend exotic shafts, that they don’t see improvements, that the out the door cost of clubs is 2-3x more than you would pay in the open market, etc. If you go in to these fittings as an educated golfer and communicate your goals and budget you will fair much better. Places like club champion and true spec are the Cadillac level. Golf galaxy is the entry level base model car with no options. local unaffiliated fitters are often a good option, but they are a bit harder to vet unless you are familiar with fitting and what you want to achieve. I have said it already in this post but before any fitting get educated on the general fitting process, ask questions before and during the fitting, and understand how they address clubs that may not appear ideal after the build. TR1PTIK
@cnosil nailed it. Know your budget and explain that to your fitter going in. Club Champion has plenty of options to fit a wide range of budgets and you may even find that a stock shaft is a good fit for you. If you are able to spend a bit more for shaft upgrades, talk to the fitter about that and try to figure out which part of your bag that money is best spent on. carfig
Thinking of going and focusing on just irons and wedges @ CC....The woods and Driver I will likely switch out more often, I'll get fitted with the specs....and get the closest stock version . There are exotic shafts even in the iron market especially if going graphite but some steel can be up there in cost. For example OBan has steel shafts that run $90 each. Bosox04
This is probably a bit old fashioned, but I really prefer to get fit outside. All the numbers are great, but I tend to be be a visual learner, and I really like to see the actual ball flight. Shapotomous
Shank Aaron
Fitters differ everywhere you go. I've been to 3 different fitters in my very brief playing career. Once for long game (Club Champion), once for irons and wedges in two separate sessions (local private fitter), and once for a putter (GolfTec). The 5th time was for a gap analysis that turned into a second long game fitting at my request where we found that what I was fitted for couldn't have been a worse fit for me. The best experience and results came from the local fitter. They were brand agnostic, took an extreme amount of time with me, and scrutinized their own work to the enth degree. I still go there at least once a year for a gap analysis. They earned my trust, and with as much time and money we all spend on this game, trust means something. I purposefully was hitting big slices and it kept drawing, never good when that happens. MartinKB
I'd like to weigh in on GolfTec specifically, because I think they offer an interesting in-between. I worked with a teacher at my local GolfTec for the past 1.5 years. I had a self-taught swing, so I felt that in order to get better, I needed to get rid of the old, and do it right. It seems like this goes against the typical advice I have heard from golf professionals that you should work to improve what you have. GolfTec is also great for learning and practicing indoors over the winter. But for me, it hasn't been just about making my swing look better, it has resulted in getting two clubs longer, and moving from a fade/slice to having control of my ball flight. So far my handicap has dropped from 18 to 12, and I just broke 80 for the first time (76 on a par 70). An important part of this process for me was getting fit for new clubs. It is true that GolfTec offers fewer choices than a Club Champion-type store. But what they do offer is the chance to get fit by your teacher, if you are taking lessons there. This is similar, in a way, to the old model where your teaching pro fits you. But although GolfTec doesn't try to match Club Champion's club selection, they do have a lot more clubs to offer than "your old club pro", who might have been a Ping guy, or a Titleist guy, etc. So I think if you are going to take lessons at GolfTec, then getting fit there is a great option. In fact, fitting is included as part of their bigger plans. You don't have to buy the clubs. You will learn about the process and be better "equipped" to work with fitters at a Club Champion, or even PGA Tour SS or Golf Galaxy. cnosil and HardcoreLooper
HardcoreLooper
From what I've found, it really depends on the individual. I received an awful fitting at Golf Galaxy, then went back the next day and received a slightly-less-awful fitting from a different person there. I just recently had a very good fitting at my local Club Champion, but I knew the reputation of the head fitter there was good. This is actually ideal, especially if you have someone who fits on grass with a launch monitor. That's the only way you can guarantee the mat isn't skewing the results. There are a couple independent fitters here in Richmond that fit on grass with a LM, but I couldn't get an appointment before we needed to place the order for the D7 testing.
