Genesis Invitational - 2022

Head back west boys... head west.  From the land of thorns, fangs, and stingers, the field heads back to CA and Riviera CC.  Last years Genesis Invitational was crazily over shadowed by one of sports biggest holy $hat news happenings and scare of the year.  But, but, Tiger is back and will be there as tournament host - though I'm on record as hoping he has a designated driver for the weekend 👍.

Max Homa returns to defend his title against a very strong field. Did you know that this used to be hosted by Jack and Arnie before the baton was passed to Tiger in 2016?  Did you know that the events charity focus is STEM... music to my ears. Did you know that Riviera CC was the site of Tigers first PGA start (1992, at 16 years old!)... strike three on all of these... yea, me too 🤣. Okay, one more... did you know that El Tigre has never won this event?  Yup, it's true, crazy as that seems.

Looking forward to this one.  Don't forget to pick your winner for this weeks pool https://runmypools.com/JRMPNWWF.

Home sweet home for Max Homa at The Genesis Invitational

Why is it that the people that have all the money they could possibly need insist on driving themselves around. If it was me, my butt would be sitting in the back of a limo. To the airport James, to the golf course James, home James. Shoot, if I really wanted to drive I would rent out a road track for a day. You loose control, no big deal, you spin out on a closed track. A full time driver will cost you less than the hospital bills. Then look at all the potential income loss.

Morikawa is playing with Xander.  Both are good choices being CA kids.

What's this?  Patrick Reed is sporting a PXG hat.  I missed the news on this recent change to the bag. Patrick Reed Announces Deal With PXG | Golf Monthly  Like Koepka (until the recent deal with Srixon), he's been a free agent on the club side of endorsements. I can't find any details on the monetary value of the deal.  If aanyone finds it, please share.

He'll fit right in with the PXG staff.  On another note, a rough first ever round on tour for Aaron Beverly at +11.  I listened to an interview with him on PGA Tour radio yesterday and really enjoyed his comments. Hopefully he lights it up tomorrow and, even if that dosen't make the cut, not head off with a torrid final score.

I listened to his comments today when asked about the return to tour play and he definitely expects to.  His biggest hurdle may simply be not being able to walk 72 holes... which he mentioned is generally 90+ with practice rounds.  The Champions Tour allows carts - so I have no doubt he'll play there if the walking on the main tour keeps him from playing.

With the injury he sustained building up enough stamina to do that will not be easy. IMO walking in general was going to be a huge hurdle with the injury he sustained let alone returning to any sort of golfing capacity. The outlier which hasn’t been discussed is how his back held up after the accident, trauma of the accident and using crutches plus likely walking with a limp had to take a toll

I have always had the thought that he wasn't ever going to play the Champions Tour.  Maybe he will if conditions are right and some of his tour buddies are there and competitive.  Instead I think he will retire and focus on his Foundation and Charlie and Sam.

I could be wrong but I had thought I listened to a podcast where someone close to tiger spoke about his drive to be the only player ever to win one tournament as a amateur, professional, and on the champions tour.

Not sure that this is accurate.  Phil won the US Amateur,  won a PGA event as an amateur, won on the PGA tour, and won on the Champions tour.

I think the conversation would be that tiger is the only person to win the us amateur championship, pga championship, and if he won the  champions tour championship. It doesn’t look Phil ever won an amateur championship

Phil won the US Amateur in 1990.   So both are missing the Senior PGA Championship.

Nicklaus has that one notched, so that might be motivation.  I think the only senior major he never won was the British Senior Open.  I always thought Tiger would, in pretty short order, sweep right through all of these but hard to say now.

I see Wyndham Clark DQ'd in round 1 for signing an incorrect scorecard.  On the surface, it seems crazy that players do this when the caddie should be doing a double check. I'm presuming most of these situations involve not accounting for a penalty stroke?

It is odd as the player and the marker read scores to each other to verify the scores when they go in the scoring tent.

If the player isn't aware that he breached a rule, he's not DQed for omitting that penalty from his score.  This is in the Exception to Rule 3.3b(2), the appropriate penalty strokes are simply added to his score to make it correct.  Typically, the caddie and/or player will record his own scores on a separate "tear strip", and compare them to the Marker's scoring before the card is signed and submitted.  I can't find any description of his mistake, other than that he shot 77 in the first round, which pretty much guaranteed that he'd miss the cut.  Maybe it was purposeful, he prefers a DQ to a WD.

Interesting, I did not know that about missing a penalty. So that makes these situations even more odd (or intended as you suggest).

Among other things, I think this change was a response to the Tiger penalty at the Masters.  After his shot on 15 caromed off the flagstick into the water, he took Penalty Relief in a Wrong Place without realizing it was a wrong place.  They made an exception to avoid the DQ which could (should?) have applied under the rules at the time, since his reported score for the hole was lower than the correct score including the Wrong Place penalty.
