How'd you play?

I don't normally go into details of my rounds, but this was a fun one:

My buddy invited me at the last minute to play this Wednesday afternoon.  It was pretty uneventful except the 14th hole.  A shortish par 4, dogleg left.  I put my 3w behind a row of trees with no shot at the green and 165 yards out.  The best line I could see was 30 yards right of the green.  So I hooded the 4 iron, and hit a low running hook that landed 40 yards short of the green and rolled on to 20 feet.  Lagged it to an inch and walked away with one the best pars of the day.  Those are fun!

There is no spoon.

Now that my semester of school is over I've been able to play a lot more consistently. This week I've got to go out with my son, who's two, twice for just a nine holes each. There are few things in life that are better than spending time with him on the course, and I can't wait for the many years we have ahead of us. Sorry for the sappy part. As for the game, I'm finally feeling confident in the swing again and posting better scores. If I could putt the dang ball life would be perfect.

The two nines at my course are very different; front nine is par 37 with more elevation change and lots of mounds that give you all kinds of bad lies if you aren't in the fairway.  The back nine is par 35 and mostly flat and the mounds don't usually come into play for me.  If I can get through the front nine in 3-4 over par, I have a very good chance to shoot in the 70's.  I have shot even par on the back nine a couple of times.  I have never shot even par on the front nine... until tonight; one bogey and one birdie.  It's too bad that we only had time to play nine holes before it got dark.  I played very well considering I did not have my best driving tonight, but approach shots and putting were good.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Not sappy at all. I've been playing on the course with one of my sons since he was 4. I played regularly with both, every Sunday afternoon in the summer, from the time that they were 7. They are both 29 (1 is adopted) and still love to play with me almost as much as I enjoy playing with them.

So I played with John, the one in the Navy, today. He is being discharged next Friday after 8 plus years. (medical discharge lots of back issues from sub duty) We had a blast.

I shot 78 at my club from the blues which is very solid. We uses John's golfbuddy and kept track of our drives. I averaged 243 which is big for me. He averaged 294. He had a couple of duck hooks that hurt his average. I actually hit every fairway, 14/14 baby!

I didnt make a birdie which hurt.

The most fun hole was 13. Its a 300 yard par 4 that is the number 4 handicap hole, think 10 at Riviera.

I hit 5 wood and left 85 to a front tee. John shoved 5 iron into the right trees. It kick out and back leaving 135 from the rough. He hit a nice 54 degree wedge to the front fringe. I hit the same club, just carried the false front and then kicked off the green into the back bunker. I hit what I thought was a perfect bunker shot but it trickled over the edge of the false front and then off the green. I lipped out frm 25 feet for par. So I hit four really good shots and made bogey while he had one poor one and two marginal ones plus a 2 footer for par.

Sometimes golf is like that.

It only got up to 95 today (predicted 98), but 103-105 through Tuesday.  So my wife and I went out at 9:30 to beat some of the heat.  My front nine was not so good with 3 doubles; swing just didn't feel right and I burned the edge on my bogey putts.  I started the back nine with 3 straight bogeys, but then went birdie, par, par, par, birdie, birdie for even par back nine.  The way I started out, I'll take a 78.  I have absolutely no idea what changed on #13 but I made a lot of putts from 6-12 feet.

Ended up falling apart after I got to 3 under at 11. Bad breaks from there on out and some stupid decisions being too aggressive since I knew the round didn't matter. Went 34 40 for 74. Tell me what I made on the par 3 13th and we can talk haha.

Stupidity or dedication? Hit the ball well again today. I'm still just struggling to get up-and-down and make putts. Just played 9. Seems like every time I play I have 4 bogeys and a birdie per 9. I guess I can't complain though.

77 today. Game is starting to take shape a bit. I was actually putting for eagle on a very uphill par 5 #14. Most people don't make it there in 2. My putting wasn't as sharp and need to work on alignment since I left myself longer putts than I should have.

As for golfing with my son - we are due. Haven't had the best of weather last couple of Saturdays. yesterday I had to cut my lawn plus my mother's which put me too late to go. He's 8 going on 9 and autistic but loves to golf. He's got his own little swing that is very unique and borderline adorable but he tries and has fun.

What an amazing weekend! On Saturday we registered 52 players for our weekly game, the most we have ever had. I started out with a decent front nine (43). With 2 doubles, thinking that I would not win, but only be a contributor. Well, that is when things got interesting. I birdied #10, then #11, then bogeyed #12 & Parred #13 . then made a Birdie on the Par 3, #15, then a Bogey on #16, followed by birdies on #17 & #18!....5 Birdies on the back nine, giving me a 3 under 33 on the back. My score was 43/33=76 with 36 Points! The +13 points yielded First Place. ...$154. Well that was pretty amazing until we realized that there were 44 total birdies, but there were no Skins! Every birdie was cut. I have not seen this in the 16 years I have been running a weekly game! To be fair, we took the Skin money and paid $5 for each birdie......it seemed to be the fair thing to do.( so I got another $25).

This was validated today with a solid 40/41=81 on Sunday.....(no birdies, but a $25 win).

So I simply had an amazing couple rounds of golf!

Last year I birdied 3,4,&5 and missed a 5 footer on 6 for birdie. Got that antsy feeling of a magical round and managed to shoot even on the front...when I was about 17 I shot 33 on the front and a 46 on the back...was just happy to break 80 that day lol

Played again today as the temperature was pushing up towards 100*.  There were not many people on the course for a Sunday, but those in front of us were slooow.  It was a 4:45 round; waiting on every shot.  With the heat and slow play, I just couldn't focus very well. Shot a lousy 83, which a couple of months ago would have been my normal, but over the past couple of weeks, I've gotten used to high 70's.

Nothing notable about my round except for hole #3 which is the #1 handicap hole on the course.  It's not a long par 4 but has water all down the left side and it comes in front of the green.  Mounds down the right side is no bail out.  Try hitting a second shot off a downhill, sidehill lie over water.  I piped my drive down the middle. So far, so good  The pin is just behind a pot bunker which is between the water and the front of the green.   The green runs away to the back.  I hit a beautiful iron right at the flag, but I get up to the green to find out that my ball hit the downslope and went off the back of the green.  Here's a pic from behind the green looking back to the fairway.

IMG_2470.jpg

As you can see, I had to chip off a downhill lie up a slope to a small shelf where the hole is located and the bunker past the pin. I knew that if the chip did not get to the hole, it was coming back about 25 feet.  I proceeded to chip it past the pin and off the green, but it didn't go in the bunker.  My next chip shot went by the hole a few feet... almost stopped, then trickled down that slope to that 25 foot spot anyway!  I managed a two-putt for double.  This is the nastiest pin placement on this hole and on a Sunday afternoon, it's ridiculous!!

My mom tells the story that when I was about 2-3 my dad picked me up from a hotel room and had me watch him play on the course while on vacation. I've been playing since I was probably 9-10 years old. Let me tell you something, I value every second with him on the course all years later. It means a lot when we can get together.

Played 18 this weekend as Saturday we had a 116 high temperature. Today was 113 and I played under a little breeze, not awful. Shot 89 and finally broke 45 on the back of the course I've been playing. On the front shot an ugly 46 including a 7 on par 5 9th that should be a relatively easy par after ducking one in the water. On the plus side cut the corner on the par 5 11th hitting one to 160 yards. Hit an 8 iron that stayed right and never broke back. Managed to get up and down for a birdie. Just hoping that my struggles were a result of not playing in a week and losing a bit of momentum.

Great round Foz! I wish we lived a little closer. I'd love to play in that game.

BTW no golf here the next couple of days. Tropical storm is moving through with tons of rain. That's too bad because I was supposed to play tomorrow. The only good thing is that it means they will push back the green aerification until next Monday and I'm playing Friday. :)
