... Every step is a different department and one of the reasons I bought my own LL machine, especially since every set I have ever received had to be adjusted anyway. My 770's were on spec with the exception of one iron off by 1* and that is extremely rare.  And if a grip or shaft isn't in stock it can take quite awhile as your clubs just sit in a queue ... waiting.

Could have been worse. It took Mizuno almost 2 months to build and send me 1 hybrid. ONE!

Yea that's pretty par for the course for Mizuno lately. When I did the long game test last year, I believe we all waited somewhere in the 10 weeks range.

Possibly. My P7CBs are standard length, loft and lie, so I was hopeful they'd be a quick build, but alas. Just means the delivery will be that much sweeter down the road

Yeah, likely won't do that again. My irons were ordered 5/20 and arrived 6/14. I guess woods take longer.

Nippon Modus Tour 120 T shafts and Lamkin Crossline 360 grips. I understand there's a lot that goes into the builds, I was just overly optimistic is all

Modus Tour 120 shafts had been kind of notorious for being out of stock with quite a few manufacturers. Maybe not the case anymore, but for awhile it seemed like they were back-ordered everywhere.

... Oh I hear ya. Big difference waiting in Chicago in spring vs fall for clubs to arrive when you know the season is slipping away. I'm pulling for you guys!!!

The other thing he mentioned is that the longer irons (4-iron specifically) looked "intimidating to hit." He said they look a lot smaller than the PW and 7i he hits beforehand. That's something that I'm going to focus on a lot because I'm thinking the longer irons in this set might be tough for me to be consistent with.

Glad it was useful. I noted the same things. Hosel transition wasn’t something I noticed as odd, but I have P790s and like that the 770 has less offset. 
 

I’m sure the long irons will be an interesting test!

... I am always aware of the hosel transition and it used to bother me. But going to the demo day at the pga show and hitting everything basically cured me. There is usually a visual adjustment when playing new irons because of the hosel transition, but after playing them awhile I no longer notice. The Cobra MIM had the best hosel transition I have ever seen and the 770's were a little jarring at first but after 4 rounds I no longer notice, unless I look for it. I have not seen the P7CB yet and in the video he says the hosel grind is even more pronounced compared to the 770's. 

... Talking to the VP's of engineering it is all about framing the ball. Instead of seeing the full club head from shaft to toe, some want your eye focused on the face and how it aligns to the ball and they will have a more obvious trailing edge of the hosel square to the face so hypothetically the face is all you see. Here is a photo of the 770 and MIM 8 iron heads close up so you can see very little offset in both. But in the address position that rear part of the 770 hosel creates the illusion of more offset. You can easily see how the rear of the 770 hosel seems much more curved than the MIM. Of course it is just visual and doesn't have any effect on performance.

For anyone who knows anything about YouTube golf, you've definitely heard of Rick Shiels. He has a newer channel called H.I.T Golf - "H.I.T Golf hosted by Rick Shiels PGA Golf Professional is the home of the most Honest, Independent and Trustworthy golf product reviews on the planet." He did a full breakdown of the P7CBs about a month ago and I encourage anyone interested to check it out!

I got to hit some P7CB's tonight at a friends house using his simulator.  These are his irons that are set up 2" upright, 2* strong and with DG X100 105g steel shafts.  A little different compared to my fitting specs at 2* flat, 1* strong and KBS Tour Lite Stiff 105g steel shafts.  And much like our good buddy @chisag he was nice enough to mention that it only took him a week to get his from the date he was fitted and the order sent in.      

I was able to hit the shorter irons up to 7 fine.  I was getting similar ball flight, distance and dispersion as my Mizuno gamers.  The more upright lie angle wasn't causing any issues with those.  It wasn't until hitting the 4, 5 & 6 irons that the heel started catching and the left miss showed up.  I took my loft & lie machine and it was interesting that his 4 & 5 were about 4* upright instead of the spec'ed 2*.  We adjusted those irons and while the less upright lie didn't help me he started hitting them better.

And his simulator set up is sweet.  It has a mevo + capturing the data.  I was seeing very similar numbers to my trackman fitting session from a few weeks ago so I have confidence in the numbers.  When my P7CB's come in we'll have another session over there to gather the comparison data.

... Well, I finally got to see a full set of P7CB's and the pictures really don't do them justice. @Shapotomous and @Byrnzee  they are stunning! Not only awesome looking at address but the back is really nice looking too. Soles are quite a bit thinner than I was expecting and I can see why some go to the 770's in the 7-4 irons. But I think both of you are gonna be crazy happy next February when your P7CB's arrive!

After receiving a surprise package on Friday.....

The box arrived intact with no crumpled edges, good job FedEx! 

Time for the Unboxing....

Taylormade packaging is very good with foam dividers in the box trapping both the iron heads as well as the shafts.  This keeps the irons locked in place, no bag chatter during shipment is possible. 

I like the look of the clubs which is very clean and classic.  There is no extra plastic inserts or bright coloring on the back of the club heads.  Just the satin finish of the metal and black lettering giving a simple, all business appearance.

The overall look, size and shape is very close to what I am currently using, the Mizuno JPX 900 Forged.  Right away I notice the top line and offset is very familiar looking.  Measuring with calipers, there is a 0.1cm difference in the width of the top line with the P-7CB (on top) being slightly narrower. 

Turning it over, the sole of the P-7CB (on bottom) is also a little narrower than the JPX900, Measuring a 0.3cm difference. 

I used my decades old Golfsmith loft and lie machine and GolfWorks swingweight scale to check the specs. 

My L & L machine has never been calibrated so when using it I don’t expect to get identical numbers as the factory but I do expect the relative difference between clubs to measure uniformly.  For example if the factory spec is 63* lie angle for an 8i and my machine measures 61*, I expect my measurement for all the clubs to be 2* less than the factory spec for those clubs.  

For the number crunchers, here is a comparison of the loft, lie swingweight and length between the P-7CB’s and the JPX900’s. 

There is not much of a difference so there shouldn’t be a big adjustment in looks or feel going from the gamers to the P-7CB’s.  We will see how the performance compares over the next few weeks.  After a few swings in the pole barn into the net (more rain today) with the 8i I can't wait to get to the course and see what the shots look like!

Byrnzee P7CB Unboxing:

 

After constantly refreshing my tracking information for UPS and FedEx for the past week, this beautiful, black box magically appeared in my mailroom on Friday afternoon without warning!

Right off the bat, I was surprised how compact the box was. This is only the second time I've received a full set of irons in the mail, but I don't recall the last set coming in this small of a package. The irons were packed with incredible care and surrounded by thick foam that didn't allow any motion inside during transit.

Each of the irons had their own slot to keep the club heads from making contact and to keep the shafts from crossing. There is always some concern about damage to equipment in transit, but I was happy to see that every iron appeared completely unharmed. A big shoutout to the TaylorMade team for ensuring a safe delivery.

Once I was able to get the irons out of the box, I had to take some time to appreciate the detail on this design. In my opinion, this is one of the best looking irons that I've seen released in quite some time. I love the nod to the old RAC irons with the raised lines in the cavity back. The classic TaylorMade "T" logo is also a nice touch that I believe contributes to the timeless look of these irons.

I also noticed right away how much smaller these club faces looked in comparison to my Mizuno MP-54s. The P7CBs feature a thinner (slightly rounded) top line that is beautiful to look upon at address. As you move towards the longer irons in the set, the smaller club face and thin top line can definitely be intimidating. I could see players who are used to thicker top lines and larger club faces struggling to find confidence while standing over these irons.

One of the things that most players might not notice at first glance is the shape of the top edge as you move throughout the set. On the longer irons, the top edge is flatter, while the shorter irons have a rounder top edge. You may be able to see this change in the picture above while moving from 7 iron on the far left to pitching wedge on the far right.

Unlike the previous P7MC model, with a shiny chrome finish, TaylorMade decided to go with more of a brushed steel finish on the P7CBs. I personally prefer the brushed steel finish, as it doesn't allow for as much glare during play. You can also see that the sole of all seven irons in this set are approximately the same size; something that is less common in iron sets today.

As mentioned in my fitting post, I ended up with the Nippon Modus 120 Tour Stiff shafts. These shafts have a nice, clean look to them and matches the timeless aesthetic of the overall set.

I ended up going with the Lamkin Crossline 360 grips in grey. I had these grips put on my Mizunos earlier this year and I love the feel of them. The grey is a subtle, classic look and the grip provides solid grip while still allowing some cushion. I had standard grips put on without any extra wraps. Everyone has different preferences when it comes to grips, but I like to keep it relatively simple.

Overall, I'm absolutely thrilled with how these irons turned out. The build is everything that I hoped for and I'm very grateful that the full set arrived without any issue. Shoutout once again to the TaylorMade team for the utmost care and precaution in ensuring a safe delivery.

I was also able to get my first round completed this morning with the new irons. Will be providing some details about first impressions in the coming days. I spent some time hitting the P-7CB 8i into the net this evening.  The feel was very familiar, balanced - not head heavy or too light that i cant feel it. It was easy to find the sweet spot.  

I was making solid contact but i dont have any numbers to share.  The Mevo was not cooperating.  The data was all over the place from 112 to 141 yards on similar contact quality.  I tried a lot of adjustments over an hour but could not get it dialed in.  I will try the mevo outside at the range this week and see if it works any better.

I hope to get on the course tomorrow if the weather cooperates.
