cburins
TPT x LAB Golf Long Putt Testing After my tournament I wanted to practice my putting, but also test longer putts. This putt was about 35-40ft. TPT Shaft Dispersion Stock Shaft Dispersion In my opinion the stock LAB shaft had a closer dispersion than the TPT, but you can see the change in speed on the TPT as I was getting more of a feel for the putt than the stock shaft. I found this very interesting and this also shows how reactive the TPT shaft really is. For the longer putts on the TPT Shaft they 100% feel more stable and controlled, but with the Stock shaft it’s harder to get feedback from the putter. That was definitely my biggest struggle with first getting my LAB, but now that I have the TPT I can see this improving my putting by a lot. Having good putting tempo and control with the TPT Shaft is lethal. I know it will take some time to really dial it in and get more comfortable with the putter, but this is truly an amazing combo. Even just the improvement from the testing so far is unreal. I find my stroke even looks smoother on the longer putts with the TPT. TPT Putter Stock Putter I could be wrong, but the TPT looks more fluid and tempo is slightly better in my opinion. I was out at the local training centre today doing lots of testing. MissionMan
Finally got out for a session on the course. Only 9 holes in preparation for tomorrows 4BBB comp. Shot a 21 pointer (36, our front 9 is par 35) on the 9 holes. 16 putts over the 9, but it wasn't a bad putting 9. Our greens have been aerated and sanded, and they haven't mowed them since it was done so they are furry and playing very slow as the video will show. I reckon they'd be at a 7 on the stimp right now. I also hit a lot of greens in regulation, and anything over 10 feet on these greens becomes a lottery, with the bouncing around so I was happy to have no 3 putts. My playing partner is a decent putter and 3-putted on the first. Overall, the greens are a little difficult to get a read on the putting right now, so depending on how things go over the next week, I may have to take a trip to one of the other courses nearby. Here are something else from the day. Darker colours on the head work better with the lines I think. The lines are a lot more noticeable. Its not that they aren't visible on the grey, but the blue is more noticeable. This will give you an indication of how furry our greens on. For some odd reason, our greens keeper leaves them way too long post-sanding. These are like most fairways. This is what the roll is looking like at the moment. cburins
TPT x LAB Shaft - Around the World Testing Today I was at my local training centre and thought I would put these putters to the ultimate test - A game of around the world. I don’t think I’ve created this game, but I always play it with my dad when we go to the range. Basically you start at one practice hole and putt the next one and see how many putts it takes to go around the practice green. Todays Results Stock LAB Shaft - 13 Putts TPT x LAB Shaft - 13 Putts It was a tie! What I noticed the most was that the TPT Shaft was really good with distance control and majority of the time left me inside 5ft. For the stock shaft the distances weren’t as close as the TPT, but my second putt just kept finding the bottom of the cup. This test was very unique because I alternated between putters to not be bias to a putter going second each time. I found when the TPT went second it was always closer, but when the stock shaft went second it was a completely different feel and putts weren’t going as close as expected. This is also a great putting green practice that makes practicing fun. Patrick Dawes
Got in some outdoor data collection today before I get stuck inside for the rest of the long weekend due to rain: Worked on some 30-foot lag putts once again TPT shaft showed closer dispersion and got closer to the hole (30 balls each from 30 feet away) TPT averaged 4.66 feet from the hole (with one ball in) Stock shaft average distance from the hole was 5.54 feet so TPT was 0.88 Feet closer on average (a 17.3% better performance). Going to continue with the 30-foot Lag data collection until I get 100 balls for each shaft as this has seemed to be a good distance to see differences for my putting stroke. With the combined data the TPT shaft (over 50 Putts) is 0.74 feet closer on average than the stock shaft. You can see one of the TPT shaft rounds below. I also did some sets and got some video of a closer 7-foot putt to warm up for the day. Here i the set up and a short video for each shaft. TPT Shaft Putt Video TPT 5 Putt Video - Made with Clipchamp.mp4 Stock Shaft Putts: Stock 5 Putt Video - Made with Clipchamp.mp4 Last but not least also got in a full round of double putting with both putters. Some highlights included nailing a 21-footer with the TPT shaft putter and getting out without any meltdown (nothing worse than a three-putt) TPT shaft needed 35 putts over 18 holes or 1.9 Putts per hole Stock Shaft needed 39 Putts over 18 or 2.2 Putts per hole The goal is at least one more full comparison round during the testing window. The 4 full rounds I have shot with the TPT shaft have been 2.3, 2.1, 1.9, and 1.9 so steadily getting better as I get the feel for the TPT shaft additionally my worse TPT round has been equivalent to my Average round from this summer with my Stock DF3 (also 2.3 putts per hole) with my average over all 4 rounds being 2.05 or 0.35 putts per hole (or 4.5 stokes per 18 better with the TPT shaft so far) at this rate this could be the final peace to me breaking 100 before this golf season is over. frazzman80, cburins, Yorkie07 and 2 others 4 1 Quote Patrick Dawes
MissionMan
The first competition rounded off the tips, It was not a great team outcome playing 4BBB with a 39 pointer, but I ended up with an individual 37-pointer (Gross 79), so it was not terrible either. My playing partner had a 35-pointer, but we both scored well on the same holes and scored badly on the same, so it didn't play out well for our score. Putting was good, as mentioned previously they verti-drained the greens and they've left the grass a little long. 30 putts on the day, and I left a few putts an inch or two short of the hole due to the lack of predictability of the greens. On a couple of occasions I only had myself to blame because my partner had already had the score, so I was going for birdie. Can’t blame that on the putter or shaft, thats my own putting. My bad chipping on the day cost me a fair few putts as well as I should have been up and down a more. Leaving yourself 10-12-foot putts from an up and down isn't great. Overall, my impressions of TPT to date are: Feel - Big improvement on Accra, incomparable to steel. The steel isn’t bad, but having played with the Accra and TPT now, it just doesn’t feel as nice. Accuracy - so far, a marginal improvement on Accra, might save you one stroke a round depending on the length of the putts, but this is likely to change over the course of the next 4 weeks as I get used to it. My current view after two weeks is that feel alone is worth it. Performance is a wait and see item. Will get out for some putting comparisons later today at a second course near my place where the quality of the greens should hopefully give us some better outcomes. cburins
TPT x LAB Shaft - Ballantrae Golf Club Review Yesterday I was able to get out for 18 with good weather which is unusual for this time here in Canada… I can’t complain! This was my first time playing this course, but my grandparents used to live here and I’ve always wanted to play it. I’ll do a brief summary on the round, but if you want to get to the review scroll down. Ive been golfing a lot lately and I find when I do that I start to get sloppy and out of form. I wasn’t happy with my performance, but I just think I was being hard on myself. Tee shots were spraying everywhere, approach shots were below average, but the putting was my saviour. 34 putts is still above average for me, but I find when I play courses with tougher green I’m pleased with that. I find the more I practice and use the TPT Shaft the better it gets and with the stock shaft I feel I plateaued. 1.9PPH Average is still great, just wish I could erase those few 3 putts. One thing I struggle with is green reading but the TPT shaft and putter combo seems to roll end over end and it’s just user error with my reads. I had a few sloppy holes but rolled in some really nice putts to save the round. 2 great birdies, 1 being a 8ft fairly straight putt and one being a tap in as I just missed my eagle putt. I think putting has a lot to do with confidence and this shaft and putter combo is there to give you that. My speed and tempo have gotten much better since starting the testing and I believe that is due to the TPT Shaft. The thing I notice the most is the control over the long putts. I’m sure the other members can attest to this. There is a different kind of comfort when it comes to using this shaft as It feels like it's working together with the Lie Angle Balance technology. So far I am in love with this combo. Patrick Dawes
Stuck Inside for the next couple of days so I am doing some indoor putting matt work. Spent today doing some prep work and testing out a few set-ups to grab some bulk data as well as to do some putting with my why golf putter thing to see how tight I can get the gates P Dawes TPT Why Golf Training - Made with Clipchamp.mp4 Also worked on a testing setup utilizing the blast sensor to look at face angle, tempo, and club head speed at impact. My plan is to incorporate this data collection with larger scale 6 ft putt data collection and get a large crop of data to look at tempo as well as if one of the two putters is more controlled in terms of face when controlling for other variables like foot and ball position more. Rearviewmirror
Bit of a bad putting round for me today with the Accra DF3 - greens were rolling exceptionally fast with a LOT of break and I had a 37 putt round (2.2 putts per GIR). Nothing was holding on the greens, and so I was often 23+ feet away with my first putt, many of which were downhill. 4x 3 putts which is also pretty uncharacteristic. In my defence I am jetlagged and haven't swung a club in two weeks, but it was still a bit painful! MissionMan
Given my inconclusive results on the putting accuracy, I decided to take on a couple of torture tests on the mat until they mow our greens in the next week. To be fair to both putters, I decided to take the following approach: Putt from 10 foot Putt from 20 foot Putt from 30 foot To make it fair and remove some forms of user error, I decide to do the following: Remove short putts that haven't reached the hole Remove long putts more than a yard past the hole Remove any big deviations. Anything more than 1.5 degrees. The reason I removed this is a bad push or pull isn't going to be shaft related, it's just a really bad putt. Results from today: 10 foot From 10 feet, 20 putts, average deviation and I also wanted to see how many I could sink before I missed one. Average deviation from straight: Accra 0.18 degrees, Average deviation from straight with TPT 0.16 Putts in a row: 10 with TPT, 10 with Accra Total putts: 16 with TPT, 16 with Accra 10 feet is a tie for me. Accra and TPT level. On paper, the TPT seems to be better, but it made no discernible difference to the outcomes. 20 foot From 20 feet, 20 putts, average deviation, and I wanted to see how many I could sink in a row within 20 balls. Average deviation from straight with Accra 0.25 degrees, Average deviation from straight with TPT 0.19 Putts in a row: 3 with TPT, 3 with Accra Total putts: 8 with TPT, 9 with Accra The above results are a little weird. My putting with the TPT was more consistent, but I sunk more from 20 feet with the Accra. I think the random nature of it will result in this. 30 foot From 30 feet, 20 putts and I wanted to see how many I could sink Average deviation from straight with Accra 0.35 degrees, Average deviation from straight with TPT 0.33 Putts in a row: 1 with TPT, 1 with Accra Total putts: 4 with TPT, 3 with Accra The above results make a little more sense. Other considerations In all cases, I found it hard to concentrate through the 20 putts and my putting steadily got worse through the test. I think it's hard to maintain longer term concentration with repetitive tasks, with even my distance control suffering. Summary This test shows the TPT is marginally better for me. I do think the feel is starting to become a lot more noticeable. I did a blind test with my wife and was able to pick the TPT every time. Initially, she thought I was using the shaft feel (rougher texture on the Accra) to differentiate, but you can feel the stiffness and the difference in vibration when you hit a ball. Our greens should be cut again after the verti-draining so I'm hoping to get out to do more testing on the course in the coming days. cburins
Tour Pros x TPT Shaft Well, there’s one thing I’ve been noticing lately in the world of golf, and that’s more and more tour pros are experimenting with LAB Putters. The biggest one lately was Ricki Fowler using a DF3 in the Sanders Farm Championship. Also, Wyndham Clark has been testing out a Mezz.1 Max. Another thing I notice with every putter is that it has the TPT Shaft. If all tour pros are using it there must be amazing technology behind it, which I didn’t some research on to truly find out. From the LAB Golf website: “these shafts are stiffer and lower torque than anything else because of the incredibly advanced manufacturing process TPT uses to make these shafts” I’ve said in previous posts that when I wiggle the stock shaft its very flexy almost like a regular flex shaft, but with the TPT its much more stiffer and I can feel the different stiffness throughout the shaft. Also, these shafts are “made by hand from multiple sheets of carbon fiber”. Basically this shaft is designed to work in harmony with the Lie Angle Balance technology and it’s truly an amazing feel. If your’e interested in reading about the TPT Shaft here’s where I got the info: https://labgolf.com/pages/l-a-b-golf-by-tpt-putter-shafts Edited Monday at 05:32 PM by cburins Josh Parker, MissionMan, frazzman80 and 1 other 3 1 Quote WITB: Driver: Titleist TSi3 - TENSEI AV Series White 65 Stiff 3wood: Taylormade Stealth - Ventus Blue Stiff Driving Iron: Ping Crossover 3iron - Ping Stiff Irons: 4-PW Titleist AP2 - Dynamic Gold S300 Wedges: 52 Vokey SM6 (F Grind), 56 Vokey SM8 (D Grind), 60 Vokey SM9 (M Grind) Putter: LAB MEZZ.1 MAX Ball: Titleist TruFeel GPS: Garmin S70/CT10 Sensors

My first ever post on MGS was about the putting green project my Dad and I made! This is what I used for the testing. It’s not the prettiest setup, but it definitely gets the job done. The TPT Shaft really shined through in todays testing as the speed control over this downhill putt was extremely crucial. It would tough to get the speed right with the stock shaft, but with the TPT shaft the putts felt automatic and consistent - This definitely seems to be a theme throughout this testing. Todays Results: Stock LAB Shaft - 14/25 TPT x LAB Shaft - 21/25 This is the biggest difference yet for the 25 putt testing. So far each day has been pretty close with the TPT coming out on top by a few putts. Most putts with the stock shaft went long and that’s a theme I’ve noticed with the stock LAB Shaft. I feel like a broken record with the TPT, but I have way more control. Controlled shaft + LAB putter head is a deadly combo… I need to work out a few issues with my stroke in general, but once I get that down I can see my putting getting to an amazing level. When I wiggle each shaft its a completely different feel. The stock LAB Shaft feels flexy, but the TPT feels sturdy and I can tell that there is different flexes in different areas of the shaft - I would love to know the science behind that, but for now if the ball goes in the hole more that’s all I care about! During my Tour Championship one of the staff mentioned that LAB recommends the TPT Shaft on the broomstick for ultimate sturdiness and consistency as long putts with the broomstick flex too much with the stock shaft. I thought that was extremely interesting and gives you a better understanding to how good this shaft is. I wish we have a broomstick tester!!! I applied...and I even noted that the KBS ski pole shaft I have in "Satellite Dish" my 50" DF 2.1 broomstick isn't even offered by L.A.B. anymore, but alas, I'm just reading and cheering everyone on as I ponder if shaft replacement makes sense or not. cburins
Day 6 - 25 Putt Testing I had a simulator sessions and was able to use the putting green available at the space to do some testing! I wanted to pick a tough putt and this green was rolling fast - Around a 12 on the stimpmeter. Todays putt was around a 12-13ft putt, slight right to left break. I wanted something that required precision and speed control, which this putt provided. If you hit it too hard it’s not going in and if you hit it too slow it’s missing to the left all day. Todays Results: Stock Shaft - 11/25 TPT Shaft - 16/25 Again, as I repeat myself in every post, the TPT Shaft is just so consistent. I find my misses are much closer than with the stock shaft. All the misses with the TPT either had just not enough pace or were lipping out. With the stock shaft I found I was putting it past the hole or missing by a few inches. It’s a very small difference but makes a HUGE difference, which is extremely important with putting. The cup is only 4 inches! I love how in sync the TPT is with the putter head - It truly is the perfect match. I know as soon as I hit a putt that it was too fast, offline or slow. With the stock shaft it doesn’t give as much feedback. Im sure other testing can agree, but once you get rolling with the TPT it is just so smooth and repetitive. For this test I sunk 10 putts in a row to finish off. I do want to emphasize that the stock lab putter is still amazing, but it definitely takes more focus and practice to get your stroke to be consistent. With the TPT it just enhances the Lie Angle Balance Technology and almost makes your putting stroke effortless. Patrick Dawes
Well it was a rainy day stuck inside so after some warm ups using the why golf putting thing to try to get a constant stroke, I took a big chuck out of my planned 300 putt each 8 foot putt challenge. I am officially 1/3 of the way through and expect to finish on time based on the upcoming look and the fact that I should probably be doing more indoor putting. Additionally based on my SAM put and Blast golf data I still putt with a slight arch so one way I am trying to find better constancy is from my feet and ball set up to make sure I am striking the ball in a constant position. To this end I added a new tool to my setup arsenal a "foot jig" made of pvc pipe to try to keep my feet and ball position consistent during tests. I also used the why golf to make sure my set-up was constant before removing it for the testing phase. 8 Foot Putt Data to Date: TPT Putts Made 58 out of 100 - Misses 20 Right, 15 Left, and 3 Short Stock Putts Made 53 out of 100 - Misses 22 Right, 18 Left, and 5 Short Putts Made difference is about 4.2% but the last 20 rolled the difference was actually 8% so they difference appears to be growing and may be significant when I reach my goal of 300 putts with each shaft so this data story could get very interesting in the final weeks of testing. In conjunction with this testing I also took Blast data on 50 Putts for each shaft Even with similar averages the Delta (total high low difference) between TPT and Stock was always a tighter range for the TPT. Additionally, the TPT shaft was only on average 0.1 degree closed and had a 6% better speed dispersion then the Stock Shaft. I was also able to maintain loft and lie angle of the putter slightly better with the TPT shaft. Next round of testing I am going to add some break to the indoor mat and use strike face indicator tape to look at center strike consistency as well. GolfSpy_APH
Did a 9 and 9 today with the TPT and Accra, but it also happened to be by chance. I have started a new game/rule as I already carry 13 clubs so adding in the extra putter is no biggy, but anytime a 3 putt happepns the putter gets benched. Just so happened to split 9 and 9 today and the results were a little surprising. TPT had 19 putts through 9 holes. Some close ones, but never got a great feel and had a 3 putt which was truly just bad by me on the 9th hole. Accra had 15 putters. Now I did chip in on 18 so if we think I made an up and down (which I didn't do a lot today) that would have been 16. The feel for both is stellar and the performance is really close to equal, but there is a clear difference in balance point for the two. The Accra feels like a lot more head weight and feel heavier so maybe a bit better on slower greens. The TPT is smoother overall, but that slight less weight in the head is nice. Both really are great so you would be hard pressed to go wrong with either after initial impressions.
