Mizuno MP-54 Fitting Experience

I have been playing Mizuno irons for about 10 years.

Started with MP-32 and moved to MP-53 about 4 years ago.

In the last three years, I have committed to improving my game (currently 7.8 handicap) by taking lessons.

As is want to happen with lessons, you sometimes take a step or two backwards to move forward.

Based on my swing changes, it appears that my MP-53 (purchased off the shelf) are not fit to my swing.

I debated looking at other type of irons, but have always loved the feel of Mizuno irons when hitting the ball in the middle of the face (just need to do it a little more often :P .

My instructor also recently became a Mizuno reseller/fitter, which made the decision easier.

Since he had the fitting cart with the Mizuno shaft optimizer.

Basically, the Mizuno shaft optimizer has you take three swings (after warming up) and it gives the fitter readings to point you in the right direction on shafts.

Once you get the recommendations, the fitting cart is used to try those shafts on the head you select (since I already had MP-53, I didn't look at any other heads).

In my case, we determined that my current shafts (Project X 5.5) are a little heavy and it recommended going to a lighter shaft (DG XP S300, NS-1000, or KBS).

Did a "shot off" between shafts and found that the DG XP S300 gave me the best performance and shoot distribution (NS-1000 were second). Only gained about 2 mph on my club head speed, but that wasn't the focus of the fitting since my speed is OK (for an old guy).

Also found that I needed the lie adjust 2 degrees up right, but I already knew that before the fitting. It just confirmed it.

Once we decided on the shaft and lie, the order was sent. The clubs were received in 9 days.

The clubs do feel different then my MP-53, but I am getting use to them.

Hopefully we will have spring in Minnesota soon so I can actually use them on a course.

Clark

Welcome, and enjoy your MP54s! They are sweet looking clubs. They are by far the best feeling clubs that I have ever owned.

Just outside of Duluth in Proctor.

Kind of working towards that goal...Spending a lot of time on my swing. Was a 5 handicap several years ago.

Between the lessons and putting a cheap simulator in my garage, the swing is really getting better. I am about 2 clubs longer now then two years ago.

Now, if spring will just come. Slow in Duluth and looks like another 9-12 inches of snow tomorrow.

Was at the course today to get my annual pass and they are hoping to open the driving range middle of next week.
