wbealsd
That depends, since I can get fitted for SOME brands an hour away from my house. Major OEM brands and options at "Big Box" retailers, plus a limited line at a local custom fitter. The custom fitter can order most brands and then modify them to your specs, but only has limited brands stocked and available for hands on fitting. On the other hand, if I want to get fitted for brands not carried locally, then the Twin Cities is an 8 hour round trip. I'd try and make a "mini-vacation" out of the trip and include a fitting while I was there. This is something I'd like to be able to work out sometime this summer, when we get an MGS outing setup for the Upper Midwest. PlaidJacket
I'll tell you how far I go. 263 miles or about a 4 hour drive. Each way. I'll be making the trip again this Friday to fit a new Driver and probably two hybrids or one hybrid and a FW wood. Texas is a big state so driving isn't thought of as such of a big deal. Hell, I can drive 8 hours east of where I live and still not cross the state line. I have noticed a few posts here and there where guys from Ohio or Georgia for example complained about having to drive an hour or maybe two. LOL Bottom line is that I'd drive where I have to go to get a top quality fit be it 30 minutes or 6 hours. Heck you can always make a day or weekend of it and play some golf along the way. Kenny B
I don't know who is a good fitter and who isn't in my area; meaning 2 hour drive. Seattle is 4 hours, so is Portland which is where I went 3 years ago. Since I occaisionally travel for both work and pleasure, I would fly somewhere if it were something that I really wanted to do. However, I probably wouldn't fly just to see a fitter unless it was a big name and was reasonably priced. “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Kor.A.Door
I'm all for the getting fitted part of golf, but I would not drive more than about 1 hour to get fit, I understand that edel wedges are nice, but why edel, why not Titleist, or callaway, or cobra, or Cleveland, they are anywhere from 60 to 80 dollars cheaper, you can get fit for them just about anywhere, is the process for making the club that much different, is what you will get out of them that much more than the others, these are the types of questions I asked myself before purchasing, it's not like any of the others are junk, just asking why the have to for Edel. PlaidJacket
I think a lot of people get all hung-up on certain boutique brands. Normally they are very expensive compared to your run of the mill clubs. I also feel people enjoy owning boutique brands and like to have something in their bag that most people won't. I personally don't know of a soul playing Edel. Now, to be honest I'd certainly look into them if I was in the market for a wedge or putter. I also plan to go by their shop near Austin sometime this summer just to look around and see what Edel is all about. I think it would be interesting. I've been quite surprised many times how many people have never heard of Wishon (what I play) or have a preconceived notion that they are some sort of el cheapo hacker brand. I'm not offended it's just that most people aren't nearly as tuned into golf as I am. Additionally, golf is my passion and my hobby. I spend a lot on golf be it equipment, travel, accessories, etc. So if a guy wants to purchase a boutique brand I say go for it. That tells me the guy is probably a golf nut like me. What's wrong with that? Hmmm? wbealsd
just asking why the have to for Edel. A couple of reasons, but mostly, as summed up by Plaidjacket - Golf is my passion! 1. The Edel Fitting Experience - Their method is supposed to be unique 2. I've never been fitted for wedges 3. Short game really needs to be my focus this year 4. Social aspect - Twin Cities is a vacation trip for me, make it an MGS event 5. Edel wedges ARE unique: http://edelgolf.com/edel-golf-wedge-design-and-technology http://edelgolf.com/wedge-FAQ 6. Severtheties
I have one reason for wanting an Edle Wedge and that is their digger grind. Either way, out of our unrivaled generosity we've pitched in $40 to help defray costs. jaskanski
So i know I want at least one Edel wedge, but I want to get fitted for it so i get the right lie, length and shaft for it. How far would you go to get fitted for a club or set of clubs? This need not be a tough nut to crack. On the one hand, once I found out the single choice of wedge was prohibitively distant, then perhaps I'd look at getting something else. On the other hand, if Edel was specifically on my wish list, I don't see why you specifically need to have it fitted at their location. Order a wedge in the loft you want and pretty much any decent club maker can adjust the lie or swap out the shaft to suit your requirements. It is true that the US is a vast country in terms of area, but statistically you are more likely to find a certified fitter in the US than any other place on earth. So that leaves you with those two options really - until of course they build a drive thru Edel wedge fitting centre in every state (unlikely), then you are left with weighing up the pros and cons of buying a specific small brand in a big country. A bit like the Bridegstone debate perhaps.
