OK, we've got the shafts in hand, and now we've got a baseline:

    Export_BM_04122021_172657_Page_01.jpg

And look! We've got some clear problems.

I'm not exactly sure what went wrong on the 7 iron. I think it was a combination of a little fatigue and just some bad shots. My 7 iron normally goes longer than my 8 iron, but depending on the outcome of this little experiment, I'm open to making adjustments there as well.

But the bunching of the 5 and 6 iron definitely came through in the swings here.

So I'm going to reshaft the 5 and 6 in the Recoils (hopefully tonight). Then I'll re-run the gapping, and my hope is to see the gaps get a lot more even.

Any thoughts about utilizing shaft length to tweak the gapping a little bit? Like maybe going 3/4" between 5-6? Maybe squeeze out 1-2 MPH more ball speed...

  2. We got to review the MIM and MIM Black wedges last year as a part of #CobraConnect Challenge 4. You can find our thoughts in these posts:

I won't rehash my entire review here, but I really like the MIM Black wedges. The finish has held up well. I have the versatile grind in both the 54 and 58, and there's not a shot I can't hit with that grind. @hartrick11 is right about the sole being pretty thin, and if I get too steep they do dig.

I reshafted them with MMT Wedge shafts to match my irons and had them bent two degrees upright (now one flat from stock), but they are still in the bag. Can't say that about other stuff from #CC4. They were by far the most surprisingly piece of equipment from the challenge and I've contemplated purchasing two more just to have on hand for when these wear out.

I also believe the new Snakebite wedges are cast while the MIMs are metal-injected molded (as the name implies).

This has really helped with my wrist action. My swing relied so much on timing before (still does but less things all coming together at once now). Ive been looking back alot when not hitting any balls when doing the "umbrella" Funny how that one movement clicks and allows so many things to happen.

The umbrella is key. In watching some swing videos I realized I wasn't fighting the PM enough and was getting my arms really behind me. I haven't actually put the PM back on, but having the feeling of going "up the wall," or "standing up the umbrella" got me back on track.

Good on you for sticking with the PM protocols. I need to bring it with me to the range and work some with it.

Dinner last night was seared tuna steak with wasabi cream sauce and keto fried rice. I used cauliflower instead of rice and you could not tell much difference, flavor was outstanding.

Looks delicious. Love me some fried cauliflower rice. I also have a good "Spanish" cauliflower rice that is excellent.

no doubt in my mind the vaccine is partly to blame there.  Even though most people are only feeling really sick for a day or so after the tiredness lingers a while longer.

My wife goes for her first dose today.  She's hoping to get through both with minimal side-effects... but I got a feeling she's going to be down and out on of the days after.

Yup! I was lucky and had minimal side effects from the first dose (brief tiredness about 24 hours after), but the second dose wiped me out for about two days, and two weeks later I still have occasional localized pain in my arm and shoulder near the injection site. My wife had it a little worse both times. We both received the Pfizer vaccine. Hope your wife has minimal side effects.

I probably wouldn't have noticed the swing speed difference just by eyeball or feel, but having the Mevo running shows a significant decline in speed since the second dose. I've noticed during my workouts that I'm still struggling a bit to lift the same weights I was pre-vaccine as well.

According to Russ Ryden, his software profiled the Autoflex SF505XX to be essentially the same profile as the Mitsubishi Bassara GG 53 S from 2014. Interesting...

I'm not sure what to make of his findings, although Russ' sites is one of my favorite technical reads and I fully believe in his EI profiling.

I've hit shafts that are too soft and they feel noticeable too soft. While the AutoFlex feels very soft at address/waggle, it feels as stable as anything I've ever hit through the swing.

I still haven't been able to get out on course with the shaft. My swing has been really miserable lately anyway, so I haven't had much to add here. I tried last weekend but only made it through six holes, and I didn't hit my driver once.

Swing speed has unfortunately been trending downward back to the 106-109 range as well following my second COVID vaccine, though as I get further out from the second dose I hope to see some of that speed return. During Tuesday's range session I still averaged 158 MPH ball speed over 14 swings so the efficiency is there (1.47).

Not sure who these "advanced" guys are you speak of, but in my case I felt my takeaway cleaned up nicely in 3-4 weeks of consistent use, and the same for better rotation in my wedge shots.   I still struggle with the shallowing part a bit, but that's more of my brain getting in the way...when I swing poorly I typically get in a race to the ball and play with a "hit" mentality instead of collecting the ball like you hear Martin say a lot in the videos.

I will say, as beneficial as it is, I sometimes find it hard to be as religious with the PlaneMate as I'd like to be...I think @edingchas experienced the same thing.  Not sure why really; I hope to be better about that this season.

Correct, I haven't really followed the protocols and only strap it on maybe once a week. I find the takeaway/backswing (standing up the umbrella) to be the most valuable part of the Planemate for me and I like having it on once in a while to keep that feel.

  8. @jlukes's posts got me reading more about the Rypstick, and there is now one on its way! Looking forward to adding some thoughts to this thread. I feel like I've stalled out with my SuperSpeed training with my DIY sticks. I'm really excited about the included consultations they offer.

In fairness to my SuperSpeed training, I've been less than consistent with it and kind of broke off protocol for the past few months. I'm tired of it, and looking through the Rypstick protocols there are some new things to try to squeeze out more speed.

  9. Finally had some stuff click at the range today. I always struggle following a lesson (I had one on March 18), but the last couple of weeks have been brutal as I've tried to work on my "homework." I exchanged texts with my coach last night and went back over some stuff we worked on last fall and struck the ball well today!

I'm an "early rotator," as my coach calls it, and I get really open with my hips and shoulders while my arms gets stuck behind me. I've been trying all sorts of feels to get my hands and arms out in front of me ("start the downswing with your hands" is what I've been told most recently), but finally got a good move today with the feeling that my hands chop hard down and left to start the downswing. It's going to take some time but the progress was encouraging! I hit a bunch of half wedges before moving into full swings all the way up to driver. I took a little video and was ecstatic to see my hands/arms working more out in front of my body at impact. My club and ball speeds shot up a little bit as well.

Next step is to strengthen up my right hand grip. It's perpetually weak and to square the face I need to perfectly time a slight forward and back movement of the upper body. I was doing some experimenting with my right hand after my session and am definitely holding myself back with a poor right hand grip.

    Onward!

Just sent my swing videos over the Luke with Rypstick. Looking forward to/dreading the feedback and predictions he gives me.

Is this something they advertise as included in the price? I know the SuperSpeed team will occasionally chime in on Twitter or on here, but having an analysis service would be helpful. I've been stalled lately in my SS training and would be interested in switching it up. My coach is a Rypstick team member so I'd be open to giving it a go.

For sure I know I shouldnt be chasing numbers with range balls! I just use it as a fun way to practice and just look at trends not individual shots so much. I am honest with myself and know when I hit a shot well and the numbers back it up. I also know when I hit a poor shot and know that the numbers may not necessarily represent that. I will try to and set up my hitting net and hit some of my tp5 into the net using the Mevo and see what types of numbers I get. will report back here once I do.

I'll be curious to hear your findings in regards to ball speed!

We still are getting temps into the 20s at night here and I've found that the range balls are super cold/slow at noon the next day yet from sitting out all night. I really, really should play a practice round with my MTB-Xs and see how the speed compares.

reviving an old thread but is everyone leaving the unit on the ground when hitting off a mat and teeing off? I have yet to use this into a net at home with tour level balls (I play a TP5) so I have only used it on the range with range balls off a mat. Has anyone noticed it making a difference in numbers? I definitely notice a low smash factor (1.3~) but can verify I have hit the center of the face using foot spray on the face of the driver. Also carry distances seem a bit off but I am wondering if that is because it is range balls and energy transfer to those rocks isnt as good.

I've found that you can drive yourself a little crazy chasing numbers with range balls. 🤣 They just aren't consistent enough from ball-to-ball. I have never used the Mevo with a premium ball, unfortunately, because on course I need my phone for Arccos. I probably should play a practice round sometime and use the Mevo just for fun.

Not only can ball speed be a bit funny with range balls, the spin readings I get from them are inconsistent as well. You can get a lot of low-spin fliers reported on the Mevo as a result.

I leave the unit on the ground, as that seems to end up with the best shot of quality numbers and capturing every shot. Occasionally the Mevo will pick up the divot on a short iron shot and misread. I've also had issues with elevated tee boxes leading to some weird launch angle numbers. At the range I visit most often my driver launch angle will be 9-11 degrees consistently, which I find to be a little low. At another range, where the tee box is situated much higher, I've seen launch angles up near 20 degrees with a driver. Same ball flight, just different tee box elevations.

Not a perfect system to say the least, but still pretty cool and in my opinion definitely worth the ~$500.

The 3 wood intention was so I didn’t lose much off the tee but I’ve really worked out my issues with driver I think. I’m comfortable hitting anything off the deck but I think the bigger head of a wood will make me feel better, how big are the super hybrid heads?

Best picture I could grab, compared to my Epic Flash 4 hybrid which already is not a small hybrid.

  14. Mentioned over in the what are you thinking about thread that I needed to outfit the top and bottom of my wife's bag:

    image.png.1a27a951fef02e7dcd47b2e398b20b45.png

Probably could have saved some money browsing eBay but the prices were comparable at quick glance. And it's nice everything all will be coming from 2nd Swing in one package. Not bad considering the driver/fairway combo is only two generations old.

  15. Shopping for the wife this time, not me. I'm personally still on a pretty firm "no new purchases" for the rest of the season. Curious for some thoughts from everyone here...

Wife hasn't played in three years due to shoulder surgery. Before the surgery we used to play an executive course that was short enough that she didn't need a driver. That course closed and so now we're going to be playing where I usually do, so she's going to need a driver, a 56 degree wedge and maybe something like a 5 wood.

She's currently gaming a set of Cobra S3 hybrids and irons that she was "fit" for in 2012. NV-3 graphite shafts, regular flex. We have 3H (20 degrees)-GW (49). When she was fit back in 2012 her mid-iron swing speed was high 70s. I put her on the Mevo last weekend at the range and that's fallen some to about a 70 MPH 7 iron (though I would expect as she gets her confidence back it will come up a few). Long and deliberate swing. She has issues elevating the ball, I'm working with her on that currently.

Anyway, looking at driver and wedge options. Looking to spend between $200-$300 for a driver, and would prefer to spend no more than $120-$130 for a wedge. No brand preference (though she said she would prefer not Callaway), so here's what I'm looking at:

Drivers (probably looking for 12 degree models) - Ping (G400 SFT, G410 SFT, G410 Plus), Cobra (SpeedZone Xtreme), Tour Edge (EXS or EXS 220). Going to be looking for SR/A flex or Regular flex, I think she'd be fine with either.

Wedges - I can get a brand new women's CBX wedge for a bargain off eBay, but I'm afraid the shaft will be a little short/lite compared to her irons. Still could swap the shaft and grip and be set for less than $100. Otherwise looking at Sub70 options? I know I could build a Maltby for cheaper but I think the CBX would be good for her. Could also bump up to $150 and get the CBX2 with the stock Rotex graphite.

Any suggestions for something else that I'm overlooking? Especially with driver?

Well the baseball itch is scratched. Worked out a killer deal on a Rawlings Heart of the Hide Bryce Harper model for only $80. I couldn’t pass it up even though it might be a bit longer than I wanted. For that price it was worth trying.

So now that that’s over... back to thinking about golf stuff. Still want to get my Speedzone and an epic max LS side by side and try the Motore X in my Speedzone.

That's a fantastic looking glove, good luck with breaking it in. I have a Worth model sitting in my basement that was made in the same factory as the HoHs and with same materials. Still not broken in fully, though I can't remember the last time I played catch!

I never was one for caring about gloves when I played, but once I started coaching I got more into them. I have a couple nice 11.5" models sitting in my basement, including a fun Venezuelan-made one from a company called Tamanaco. Very soft and light cowhide, not sure how it would hold up to daily use, but a cool glove nonetheless.

Curious to hear if you find an easy-to-follow, workable on course solution!

Side note: downhill putts .. most of the time .. I try to guage the adjusted distance to the zero (or fall) line to the hole, and obviously factoring for amount of break and green speed. Kinda un-scientific but it's been working decently for me.

This has been my strategy, for the most part. I go to the practice green and find a flat 10 foot putt to calibrate. On course I step off my putt and then do some rough guessing, like, "Twelve feet, slightly uphill, playing 15."
