Splatt
G’day Golfers, Hold on to your hats and warm up your beer-throwing arm because it’s time for the Waste Management Phoenix Open. I’m sure this event will feature heavily in the upcoming Netflix Full Swing documentary if only for Higgs and Dahmen’s antics last year. This is the first full-field designated event of 2023 and 136 golfers will tee it up for a share of the $20 million pie. That’s a lot of beer! Being the first elevated designated event of the year the field is going to be stacked. Part of the Tour's strategy for these new higher profile events was to ensure the top players played the same tournaments more often, so all of those who finished in the top 20 in last year’s PIP program are required to play in 12 of the 13 designated events. The WM Phoenix Open is played at TPC Scottsdale, a par-71 course, 7,261 yards long. TPC Scottsdale is home to the stadium hole, the loudest hole in golf. Some more hole-in-ones this year at the 16th will make for some great Twitter content and leave a big mess for the volunteers to clean up. My ass would be clenched hard! The defending champ here is Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler defeated Patrick Cantlay in a playoff for his first PGA TOUR title, and then from there went on quite a run landing him in the world number 1 spot and picking up his first major at The Masters. Field Highlights · Rory McIlroy – The current world number 1 makes his 2023 PGA Tour debut. Although this is his first event in 2023 in the PGA Tour, The Rors has been quite busy playing in a lot of events over in the DP World Tour. His last 5 starts in the DP World Tour are T2, 4, T4, 4, and 1 – winning the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on Jan. 28. To say he’s in form is an understatement. Is there anyone who won’t pick him for their Pick ‘Em team this week? · Jon Rahm – World number 3 (should be 2) has had a great start to his 2023. Rahm has won four of his last six starts combined on the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour, including back-to-back wins in 2023. To say he’s in form is an understatement. Is there anyone who won’t pick him for their Pick ‘Em team this week? · Hideki Matsuyama – Trying to be the fourth golfer in the Tour’s history to win the Phoenix open three times. Matsuyama has a good record at TPC Scottsdale with no missed cuts and six top-16 finishes in his first 8 appearances. His recent record has him on a streak of nine straight made cuts. · Scottie Scheffler – Former world number 1, Scheffler is the defending champ at this event and is looking to become the first golfer since Hideki Matsuyama (2016-17) to repeat in Phoenix. His recent form on his last 5 starts is T11, T7, 2, t9, & t3. · Collin Morikawa – If I was him I’d still be having nightmares about that spectacular collapse back at The Sentry Tournament of Champions, luckily for Collin, he isn’t me he’s a pro golfer so I’m sure he’s sleeping soundly. His four starts this year have him T-15, 6th, 2nd, & 3rd. He looked great at Torrey Pines so I expect he’ll come to TPC Scottsdale firing on all cylinders. The full field list can be found here That’s it from me. If you’re in the MGS Pick ‘EM competition get your picks in and get your fingers crossed. Splatt So, Collin and Hideki are your "difference makers" last week mine was Justin Rose, he kept me in the hunt for 3 days, both Collin and Hideki are trending in the right direction and all the players want to "peak" for the Players Championship but mainly for the Masters... I am loading my top 4 with the main players then taking a risk on my 5th... and cheering the heck out of it for him to win the thing lol 1 Quote committed to performance excellence
