Sub70 TAIII Wedges - 2023 Forum Review

Finally hopped in the read some. Nice work everyone. I am looking at possibly new wedges next year and these are on the list for sure

Played a full round yesterday (Which is why i missed the Forum call). Played very well and will be adding to my write-up here by the end of the day!

Finished up my intended testing at the practice green today and put all the data together.

One thing I noticed is I am much more consistent from the rough than the fairway, regardless of who made the wedge. I assume it's because I don't always make perfect contact so spin from tight lie is less consistent. In the rough, the grass behind the ball reduces spin on all shots, whether I make perfect contact or not. Keep in mind, the rough around here isn't terribly penal. Only occasionally will you end up with a thick, juicy lie that you don't know what's going to happen. One more thing I want to do and it's time to write this up....

Played in a family golf outing on Friday and one thing I noticed is out of the rough the spin tends to drop a bit more than expected for me. I have a tee time after work today so I am going to see if that was a course thing, me thing, or wedge thing. Mentally my writeup is there i just need to get these wedges on Trackman and get some numbers for the partial shots and possibly some wet conditions too.

Putting together all the numbers I have for the water testing I did. We have had a lot of rain in southeasten Pa the past few weeks. I took my PRGR, Garmin R10 and about 2 dozens Pro V1 RCT balls over to the local course and was hitting a dozen balls out into fairways during a few of the stroms. I was using my Ping Glide 2.0 52, 56 and 60 degree wedges for comparison with my Sub 70 TAIII 52 and 58 wedges. My Pings definitely dont have as much spin on them compared to the fresh grooves on the Sub 70s but there was a strong difference between drop off in wet conditions to the dry conditions, indoors using the GCQuad. The one thing that stuck out most was the dispersion because of the occassional flyers I had. I thought this would be a good test to see since in many eyes PING wedges are the standard for wet condition wedges. I also did some testing very early the past few mornings on 30 yards and in wedge shots to flags to see a difference. Not much data to back for this portion of my testing other than proximitey which got tighter as the test went on for both sets of wedges.

I got on Trackman this morning before getting ready for work to get some numbers with the 56° TAIII and the grooves were eating away the brand new ball I was using. After cleaning up the grooves with some soap and water and drying what I thought was pretty thoroughly I saw a large change in spin that I was not expecting. I will go into more detail in my final review but for now a wet wedge test is for sure in the future after what I saw this morning.

Played in a mini-practice session and from 65 yards I hit a shot where I wanted a little more zip (I was in the fairway), and when that ball touched the softer greens we have right now it zipped back. Now, I am not a player who can do this on command but I can say with a surety that these wedges have the capabilities to do as much if not more spin than the big dogs. Yesterday was kind of a shock to the system to see such crazy amounts of spin. From tight lies these things can do work!

This is what I have been finding as well. These things can easily hang with the big dogs from the tight lies and around the greens in general.

I've been planning to rent a bay at our local Golf Galaxy, but wouldn't you know it, the one near me is temporarily closed? The store they were in is small and in an awkward location from a traffic flow perspective. They are moving about 5 blocks into the building that used to be an Office Max or Office Depot. Grand (re)opening is this weekend, so hopefully there will be some bays available next week.

Trackman testing was completed this morning. The last leg was wet wedge testing with the 60° and breaking everything down for the final review is gonna be a lot of fun.

Played in a super fun tournament this last weekend, and I have to say the wedges performed! I had some shots that weren't so great, that is definitely on user. However, it was a blast and though we did not win I had tons of confidence in the wedges and knew that if I pulled them out they would not only perform but exceed expectations. I will be including more in my final write-up, but thought I would add this little blurb about how much fun it was to play with these wedges and do so well.

I will say one thing that I have loved most about these wedges for those who may not read the full write-up is that they are the best thing for me personally from off the green. I struggle a lot with hitting the ball well off the fringe with my putter. I always leave it so short and can not seem to get the ball rolling the way I would like. With these wedges, this frustrating part of my game has all but changed. As an example, we have a hole here at Snowflake Municipal that is a short par 3 over the water. We hit it short of the green on the fringe with a lot in the way before hitting the putting surface. My playing partners all pulled the putter and left their shots short. I on the other hand (Not tooting my horn too much haha) pulled my trusty 58 and hit it an inch short.

For the Testers - Wedge testing is going on at MGS HQ if you were to predict where you think these will end up where would it be? Do you think there are certain areas they will excel in and others they may fall a bit short or is this just an all around gamer wedge?

I think these are going to fall more in the middle of the pack. I can see them being a strong contender when it comes to start and finish line but I am concerned in the wet wedge portion of the wedge testing. I think that aspect is going to hurt them in the wedge testing but they will still put up a strong showing. I do think they will also be very player dependent as the sole design and leading edge can cause some trouble for players if it is not a great fit.

I couldn't agree more with this aspect of the wedges. This is something that I feel is a true strength of these wedges when playing straight forward chips around the greens. I have gained a lot of confidence in this area with these wedges and is something that I feel is worth giving praise to. Very glad to see my experience in this aspect of my game being echoed.

Without the benefit of any firm sim numbers just yet, I think they will end up in the upper middle class. Definitely some quality wedges that perform quite well. I feel like they might be a bit more penal on off-center shots than my Cleveland's, but that is just conjecture at this point.

Yesterday I went to @MattF's house as he has a new Skytrak launch monitor. Played around a bit then did the wedge matrix with all 4 clubs. I haven't really dug into the report just yet, but there was nothing super glaring that jumped out at me good or bad. I have a lot of thoughts about what that all means, but you'll have to wait for the final review that will be posted in a couple days. I did learn that my perception of a 3/4 swing sucks - it's almost a full swing.

I did have a huge brain fart and totally forgot to squirt some water on the faces and see what happens to spin.  Fortunately, HQ will have likely have that covered when wedge testing results come out.

Last night in league I played my first round with my "mixed" set of wedges (Cleveland 54*, Sub70 58*). I chipped in for birdie on the 9th with the Sub70. I would take these results all day, any day....
