I own 2 60 deg wedges and I practice with them, but where I play now I don't put either one in the bag. Not a lot of thick rough around the greens, so the Up-n-In chippee works near the green. The gap from 44 to 52 is not an issue, I am pretty good at hitting the 44 less than full swing. When I start playing more, I might go with a pair of Indi wedges, maybe a 48 or 50 and then a 54 or 56. I tested them at their place, indoors, I did like the feel and spin was slightly higher than my Mizuno, on the indoor mat. They are 10 minute drive from home. I feel empathy for those of you in Ohio, Michigan, upstate NY etc. where I used to live. I ended up in San Diego, next door to all the club companies in Carlsbad. A strong pitching wedge? The course I play now has lots of hazard areas: under trees, hardpan and twings and leaves, but not much actual rough grass. My old Hogan Sure Out is almost exclusively for sand, I think it must be a 10 or higher bounce, good for long rough but useless on hardpan. I think it makes sense to match your clubs to the course. I am considering changing things up though as the 58 is used so little that i might try dropping it and moving the 54 to a 56. I feel like i want a fitting on this specific area of my game, but with stock from previous years to save money haha. I think it comes down to your play style and game. Do you need more top of the bag options and help? then drop a wedge. Do you need more short-game options and versatility, then you are likely sacrificing a long club. I think it probably comes down to the course you are playing, but I definitely struggle with this decision. Dropping the 58 to a 56 makes sense. I own 2 different 60s but they stay in the garage given where I play now. ALso I use a chipper around the green instead where the pros use a 56, 58, or 60. Fore67
4 Wedges, P -45, A - 50, S - 56, L - 58. My pitching wedge and approach wedges are part of my iron set, my sand wedge has a larger bounce and my lob wedge has a tight leading edge for those delicate chips off short grass around the green. Max distances, P - 120, A - 105, S - 90, L - 80/85. My gaps allow me to really dial in an approach/short game. I am really confident with this line-up of wedges, all Callaway. I am, however, open to putting a Vokey 54 & 58 combo in the bag. I would have to play around with the bounce options, but looking to get maybe the last set of clubs for my retirement. It used to be easy. You had a PW and a SW and go get em! Now you also must decide between adding a 50, 52, 54, 56, 60 or some model bent in between . Are we making a game that used to be fun more complicated than it should be? Before this posting I went out in the shop (aka garage) and counted. 22 wedges! I have never attempted to do a study whereby I correlate scores to which wedges I chose. Did it really make a difference? II know different types of sand may require different types of bounce or different leading edges. Having said that, given that most of our rounds are played on the same two or three courses and the days of shooting under par have left the building, I thing it’s time to go back to the basics. One pitching wedge, one sand wedge and get out and have fun. What say you? Using something like Arccos to track your shots would be a good tool. Stats it can give you, like the number of times you have used a club, will show you what you go to on the course. Having anything in your bag you don't want to hit is obviously a waste of space as you'll just avoid it.
