Odyssey Ai-ONE Milled Putters - 2023 Forum Review

With the weather finally cooperating, I've been getting out to the putting green again. Yesterday was a focus on 15 foot putts. I've included a snippet of one of my sets of 6 putts from this range with the Odyssey.

Going out again today to put in some more time before I play my first VCT Championship round.

Do you attribute your nearly straight stroke path to the claw grip?  Thr sound off the face is so quiet.  Great speed control

I started using the claw grip pretty soon after I got this putter. I found my normal grip made me much more right hand dominant and I was pulling putts more than usual. The claw grip has been much more consistent but I still haven't got a feel for it yet on putts outside 20 feet. But 15' and in and I am dialed in. And the milled AI face provides such a large sweet spot that I can really trust this putter more than my Bettinardi if my swing path is just a little off. I recorded 6 sets of videos. I was 5/6 on this one but I was 2/6 or 3/6 on the others too. If I can make 1/6 from 15' on a consistent basis, then this could be the season I finally break par!

Putting update from my 69 yesterday. Biggest stand out stat of the day was having 6 putts from over 40 feet. 5 out of 6 finished inside 3 feet for easy pars. The last was an 8 footer that I managed to drain dead center. My four birdies made were 2’, 3’, 6’ and 10’. Missed another 6 chances at birdies from 12’-20’ but all but one burned the lip. The Odyssey has definitely raised my putting game and it looks like I’ll be just fine on long putts with my claw grip after all.

It's great seeing the testers from both the milled and non-milled putters providing updates after the final reviews 👍.  While my Seven T CH has had two benchings, they have been very brief and each time it has found its way back into my bag.  What is pretty cool is that the small performance gains I saw in my H2H tests look to be showing in my average scoring and index.

I stopped at DaGolfLab the other day to see if they had a couple spare club boxes I could have (making a travel box for fly rod cases for a Canada fishing trip) and the owner happened to be holding an Odyssey AI Milled putter.  We got to talking about these and the face technology.  He's been in the golf equipment business for a few decades and said "the AI milled face technology in these putters and other club faces is one of the best, no baloney improvements he's seen".  No arugment from me.

After my last round of 78 I decided I needed to work out a few wrinkles in my stroke. I started off hitting a few putts from 15’ to get the line dialed in. Then I set up a gate to keep me focused on my starting line. IMG_0791.jpeg.c32944e4c21b332e6f3d15c80a8d79ce.jpeg

I struggled for the first 10-15 minutes to avoid hitting the gate. I was bumping it about every third putt. I made a couple adjustments in my stroke and started getting putts through the gate with fewer errors but was still getting one contact every set of six balls. It became clear that my errors were coming from an inconsistent swing path causing me to push and pull the ball offline. By the end of my hour session (had to get home to make dinner) I was able to get multiple 6-ball sets cleanly through the gate but I was not seeing the speed control I normally have. After removing the gate and getting in a couple more sets I was finally able to get the ball on line and finish in close proximity to the hole. IMG_0792.jpeg.324e8da70b5370a242df2efbdc9b08c4.jpeg
My last three sets all looked similar to this. It was a good way to finish but I still have a couple more sessions to get in to feel like I’ve worked out all my issues. Might have to lean on @cnosil a little bit as I work through this.

That sounds like me when I do gate drills - I am beginning to think the "urgency" of getting through the gate cleanly makes it much, much narrower.

Millie update - she has been behaving nicely of late.  I am looking forward to fresh growth grass greens and seeing how she performs there.  More updates to come...

Life w/Millie (AI-ONE 7S DB Milled):  This putter continues to impress and keeps all the boxes ticked on what makes a putter great for me.  For kicks and grins, I took Versa (7CS w/White hot face) out for a round the other day, just to see and I thoroughly regretted not taking Millie.  Today, I began a new journey in which Millie will be very key in the process.  I posted yesterday in the "practice thread" of having gotten in a dozen Snell MTB PRIME X balls (2023 closeout sale @ $20per dozen) and as I had most of a dozen of MTB PRIME balls as well, figured why not go head to head with the balls to see how they play from green to tee.  With the rains of today being an outside washout, I spent time with the putting mat, Millie, the Snell balls and some of the competition - while that is a story for another thread, I want to say Millie did not disappoint in delivering the balls to the cup.  One thing I noticed - the Snell's tend to talk more when the ball is struck off-center, more of a clicky sound when off center and a duller thud when on.  Millie did not care as she would consistently keep the ball on track into or lipping by.

Just a quick update.  I'm starting to feel guilty seeing the ER5v sitting on the workbench as I back out of the garage ☹️.  But the Seven T CH has been so rock solid, what's a guy to do?

Mar 30 "Millie" update:  Played 18 today with my niece's husband (they are in town for the Easter weekend).  His first time on the course since we last played together on Labor Day last year.  How did Millie do?  Very, very well - my playing partner commented several times about how dialed in the putter was.  Looking at the scorecard notes - I had one 3 putt, twelve 2 putts and five 1 putts.  The lone 3putt was part of the 2nd hole disaster - needless to say if you're going to blow-up a hole - do it from beginning tee to green.

Of the two putts, most were looking over the lip roll bys that finished less than 18" from the hole.  Something about walking up to a green and you need an easy pitch/chip to get close to the pin and know that no matter, your putter is going to deliver on the putting side.  A good day putting with a total of 32 putts rolled.

  • 2 weeks later...

Apr 19 update - Played today with the Men's group at my local course.  Teamed up with a couple of guys who play pretty much even with me, so it was a good day to see how things shaped out.  Also I was testing the Bridgestone Tour RB Mindset ball as part of the "unofficial" test.  I have rolled a good number of putts with "Millie" (Odyssey AI-One Milled 7 DB) using this ball, but not as a stand alone testing round.  What were my impressions of this combo - the Bridgestone ball and Millie - first the ball feels deeply familiar as it reminds me of a ProV1 but maybe a little less muted off the face (at least to my ears).  Second - the distance control is phoenominal as this putter continues to just roll the ball to the hole, several birdies that just missed the cup stoppign less that 18" from the hole.  Last and most importantly - the "Mindset" premise carries well into the putting and Millie likes it!  Had several comments about how "smooth" the stroke was on the putt and I have to think its more the putter than the puttee.  This putter continues to impress as it just rolls the ball so smoothly - even when just off the green.   Had several that where the putter just delivered the pace to go center cup....Overall putting average has dropped to where it is hovering in the <30 putts per round range (including a record 26 putts in the rain last week, 31 today).

Hopefully the other "Milled" group continues to see consistent play from their putters as well.

Glad to see Millie is still performing for you…sounds like she will be in your bag for a while.
