Preferred lies extended until May

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this has been highlighted yet or not, but for those of you in England the winter preferred lies option has been extended until the end of May. This is due to the exceptionally wet weather we have had and is unprecedented

Agreed.  When the fairways look like the landing area for mortar practice it's nice to see some common sense applied.

There are some courses in the Portland area that have waves in the ground by the greens, nearly impossible to chip or putt your way out of it. And somehow those same courses have a low course ratings/slopes.....

#truth.  I think lack of roll and a bit of mud adds 2-3 shots to my handicap lol

If not more! I’ve noticed a big difference in my shot length the last couple of months due to it being so wet here. The ball just stops where it lands no matter what club you’re using

I grew up in New England where winter shut down courses altogether for 5 months a year, and so most of the time I try to be grateful to play year round in the suburban Seattle area. But make no mistake, when I get to play somewhere dry it’s a whole different game! Especially the short game. Pitch shots out of mud are torture.

Really don't have an issue with it on the fairways, been raining here in Scotland since October , well it feels like it. I'd like club to introduce the mark lift and clean and drop in the rough as well. The rough is just a sodden as the fairways

There's not really a Model Local Rule to do just this, but they COULD use MLR E-2, which allows you to lift and clean your ball, but then replace it in its original location.  That way, you're not using a rule to get out of a bad spot when you've hit the ball off the fairway, but you still can avoid clumps of mud on the ball.

Its great that there is an organization, I get it maybe not covering public play, but a ruling by someone that can be looked to, in determining lift clean and place, by many others.  Here it seems like lift clean and place is left to the individual, and I observe very few people doing, it when clearly it should be done, everywhere not just in the fairway.    I have never seen anywhere, a sign or notification to alert other players playing the course, that it is lift clean, and place, out there today.

I just wonder how many people at the courses I play are waiting for somebody to tell them that lift, clean and place is ok, in Jan-April in Northern Ohio, and are "afraid" for some reason to make their own decision.
