How much of a difference can you feel in the types of golf balls that are out there now?

If I’m not golfing, i’m bowling. My whole family bowls so it’s something we can all do together at times.

Massive. Probably one of the biggest feel and performance differences and changes you can make.

MASSIVE difference! I find more of a difference in putting and wedge shots than I do in larger clubs but thats also just me I believe.

And feel off the putter and wedge face plays a mental factor for me. Its why I just began to try difference type of golf balls till I found some I liked within my price range

You can feel the difference in the golf balls. Callaway Supersoft, Srixon Soft Feel, TaylorMade Speed Soft, and others have a very soft marshmallow feel. Then there are golf balls like Srixon Q-Star, and Callaway Chrome Soft begin to feel a little firmer. Then you can go to a high-compression golf ball like Callaway Chrome Soft X LS, Srixon Z-Star XV and TaylorMade TP5x Pix, which are very firm golf balls. With each level of compression, you can feel the difference.

If you are trying to find the right golf ball for you, grab a couple of different sleeves or a few found balls on the course and try them out. Some spin more, some fly straighter, and some are meant for the water holes (Nitro's LOL). Find what you are looking for in a golf ball.

I'm no "touch master" but I can definitely tell the difference between some models of balls for sure. The harder the ball, the less I like it (within reason, of course).

It’s like Goldilocks and the three bears. This one is too hard, this one is too soft and this one is just right.

Each golfer has their own “just right”. Feel between golfers is different. I can play a ball for one hole and know if it feels right for me.

As a higher handicapped player like yourself, sometimes I cant "feel" a difference but from playing rounds and playing with a simulator I can see a difference more than feeling one.

I had to take a call, so I didn’t finish my post.

Start from the green and work backwards. Putt, chip, pitch, full approach, and then off the tree.

On the green, notice how the ball rolls out. If it hits and rolls across the green then you loose control around the green, you need a ball with more spin. Too much spin will hurt you if you have a slice. Then it will slice more. It’s all a trial and error process. Most of the ball websites have a ball fitting tool which is a good starting point.

I will say I notice a bigger feel difference off the putter and wedges compared to woods and driver. Irons I don't notice much of a difference with few exceptions (ie Callaway supersoft vs Pro V1x). Over time I found I prefer a harder ball but not super firm, currently alternating between the Maxfli Tour S (which is the softest of the bunch but not a marshmallow either), the ProV1, and Bridgestone B X.

You can tell the difference between  a soft ball  like a srixon  AD333  and a pro v1x  the have difference flight patterns  like an arch flight with little spin in AD33  or  a solid  straight flight  with spin in the pro v1x   also depends on your club head speed If you are between 80mph and 90mph a soft ball would suit you better if you swing over 100mph club head  speed  your more suited to a pro v1x   i am 56 and have club head  speed of 109mph and ball speed of 152mph measured in simulation  trackman

I will echo what everybody else is said. You have to play different balls to find the ones that suit you the best. I have had a few that I have really enjoyed play with. And then there are some that I just won't go back to. It is all trial and error. Just remember that the better you get at this game, the more things will change and you will have to find different ones to match that

I agree with everyone’s take, you can also throw in the higher price balls will have a lot more influence on feel, with the lower price mainly being on the hard side with a few exceptions

Looking at comments I feel like a novice. Guess I am still in early stages of golfing, even after 3 years. So far the ball hardly makes a difference to my game. But guess I need to pay more attention to it now.

I can't often feel a difference between balls of similar compression and cover construction.

But from low compression to high? Surlyn to urethane? I can "feel" the difference. Sometimes far from the green, sometimes close.

But, performance/results is king.

A year ago I was in your same position. I did not know the difference between any of the manufacturers and thought a ball was a ball was a ball.

I'm beginning to see my "enhanced" slice with my oh so frugal Kirkland balls. *sigh*

Sound is often falsely labeled "feel," especially inside 50 yards. On full swings, you can certainly feel a difference, especially with irons, but if someone tries to tell me the "feel" off the putter is softer or harder, I just ask them to put on some headphones and do a blind test. As soon as you lose the ability to hear from your lead ear (left ear for right-handed putters), you won't be able to tell the difference between golf balls. (You can also tell someone is tipping their hand when they describe a feel as "clicky," which just means it's a higher-pitched tone than they prefer. Again, go put on some headphones and hit 10-20 yard pitches when you don't know which ball you're hitting. They'll all feel the same.)

Also from experience, once I have found a ball that works for me, I look for comparable balls to the one I have played successfully with. Some factors I take into consideration, number of layers, compression rating, and driver spin rate. (because a ball that slices off the tee is harder to find than a ball that slices with an iron.)
