Conventional putter for a 6'9" sasquatch with a bad back?

Hello all!

25 years ago life and two blown discs forced me out of the game.  I'm healthy again, have more time, a wife who is learning to play (best thing!) and so I'm picking up the sticks again.

My bag is squared away, except for a putter.  My old custom shafted 42" Ping Anser 4 is just way too light, and I'm finding even at 42" my back is screaming at me to knock the hunch off on the back nine.

I've been looking and am just not finding anyone willing to make me a 44" or longer.  I'm wondering if i can get away just regripping a broom/belly?  Any other ideas that don't put me at a distinct disadvantage I can't learn around?  Thanks in advance!

Based on what you indicated, cutting down a broom will be you best option.  Could get you heavier head and lnter shaft you are looking for.   All you can do is try it out and see if it works.

a 44" putter sounds interesting. However you will be limited to a lie angle of 80 degrees.

I think it can be done and I would suggest a putting style of side saddle.

Driver - 44.5" 5.0 flex 10.5 deg Graphite Design XC 6S GP MCC4+ 1 deg closed

Irons - 5-pw, GW stnd length 5.0 flex same grip 1 deg flat. Type low medium offset cavity back, no diggers

Wedges - 56 and 60 tour grind wedge spinner and mcc4+ grip 2 flat 10 and 8 in bounce

Putter - Makefield VS LH

Ball - truvis

Carried in a Sun Mountain C-130 USA bag - BE PROUD.

HC - LH but 85 is a good number, playing in Ohio.

Take your 44 inch putter and add a 2" inch extension.  You may not be able to save the grip since it's been on the club awhile.  After that buy a package of lead tape or self adhesive tire weights from Harbor Freight.  Add weight until it feels right to you.  Play with it for a few rounds.  Then if you want to get a new putter contact Golfworks in ohio.  They have a nice line of putter heads.  If you see something you like call them.  They are pretty good at building whatever you want and it won't cost you $400 for a new putter.

Putter:  Inazone Stand up

Do your game and you're back a big favor, go with the broomstick. Find a length that you are comfortable with and practice. I carry 2 putters as I also have that back problem that pops up from time to time, but I only use the standard (35") for long or off the green putts, so it's not used that much. We can have lots of putters but only 1 back, so make it feel good.....👍

Usually, very tall people have very longs arms
which put their hands roughly the same distance from the ground
as those of shorter people.

A conventional putting posture is going to wreak havoc on any ailing back, regardless of one's height.
I'm not sure if there's a non-narcotic solution for it.
When it get really bad, you probably need an epidural shot which might hopefully hold you over for a while..

In my case, I just  suffer through it because I enjoy playing,
have a couple of drinks afterward,
and then eat something and have coffee before I drive home a suitable time after that..

Whether everyone knows it or not, it has been reported on here, that I am 6"7" or maybe it's 6'10" by now---I kind of lost track since we don't get regular mentions of it anymore   Oh and I was fit for 1/4" short clubs 🤣

LOL at above, if you know, you know.

Truth is at 6"4" I putt with a 35" that is what is best for me.   I tried a 36" and 38" that allowed me to stand up straighter and more ease on my back.  But I never felt comfortable with that long of putter.

What I have heard when I went to a couple OEM putting fittings, you should putt with the shortest putter you feel comfortable with.   That allows your arms to hang more freely and not get too crunched which would tend to get them involved in your stroke.

So, 35" was that for me.  34" did hurt my back more during extended practice.  And the longer 36 and 38 mentioned above.

If you’re not playing regulation tournaments, why not get a long anchored putter? That’ll let you be very upright anyway…
