Testers Wanted: Newton Driver Shafts ×

Did I get shafted?

Recommended Posts

My last two sets of irons are Mizunos and PXGs.  I got fitted into Project X 115 gram steel shafts in Mizuno and MMT 73 gram graphite shafts in the PXGs.  My miss with the PXG is a pull but similar loft with the Mizuno tend to go lower. Never really thought about the weight difference but now I’m thinking about new irons (again).  Just wondering if I should narrow down options before my fitting to maybe something in between like Aerotech SteelFiber i95 shafts or just totally submit to my fitter?  I am hoping to save time so we can focus more on club heads.  Mizuno JPX Forged & 245, Titleist T200/T150, Srixon ZX5 Mk iis are on my wishlist.  Any suggestions?

IMO, don't narrow shaft options;  you simply don't know what will or won't work for you with the head selection.    The job of a fitter is to find the head/shaft combination that works for your swing so trust them to do your job based on the feedback you are providing and the information gathered from any systems being used to measure.   Since you have specific heads you are interested in communicate that at the beginning and the fitter should try to work through them if they believe they may be a good fit.

Exactly this.

You may have it in your head that X will be the best option without realizing that there is likely something you have not considered that will suit you better.

Be open minded and try as many as possible.

Yeah, y’all are right. I probably shouldn’t narrow down the club heads either but it’s sometimes hard to relinquish control!

If you want a specific club or brand you can state those wished and the fitter will find what shaft works best with the head.  This is want sponsored players do.    Most amateur players let the fitter do their job;  I'm not sure I would ever limit what I am fitting into if I was paying for clubs;  I want to get what works best.

I’m thinking about going there with a mid iron from both sets of current clubs for a baseline and let him work his magic.  I know what clubs seem appealing and appropriate for me but I’ll let the data decide (even if it’s to stick with my current clubs).  No 4 iron in my bag right now so it will be 5-PW + gap wedge and hoping to keep it under $1400.  Also hoping something “WOWS” me.

You shouldn't think about taking your current clubs;  you definitely need to hit them for baseline numbers.

Thanks for your input!  I’ve got Trackman data on all my clubs as well as Arccos stats and know I swing my 6 iron 78 mph and carry it 163.  And I know there’s too big of a gap between my 7 and 8 iron.  But I also know my PXGs are 2 seasons old so I believe there’s something that can perform better for me and if I keep rubbing the lamp 🪔… who knows what genie might come out!  When I went for my driver fitting, Titleist TSR3 was not on my radar but it’s now my best club.  So it looks like I need to give up control and let my fitter do his thing. I have a tournament Monday and will schedule a fitting after that.  I’ll advise the forum what the fitter advises me.

That is great to know, but when doing a fitting you want to compare side to side on the same launch monitor.

You are right.  I’m just afraid that he will say I should stick with my current gamers and I won’t get a shiny new set of irons that will lower my index!

If you like the mmt and steelfiber I would recommend hitting the Axiom shafts.   They feel like a cheat code for me.  If I had limited what my fitter showed me I never would have even tried graphite for my irons.

You can always buy something new if you want to! But wouldn’t you want to know if what you’re hitting now is good/great for you, or can be improved upon?
