Correct balls

Recommended Posts

I'm curious about swing speed and golf ball combination.  My speed is between 94-102. Is it true that the proV1 is designed for faster swing speed( over 110) and not very good for a slower speed swinger. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

I LOVE THIS GAME!!!

In theory, the whole "high compression is for fast swingers" concept works, but according to the MGS ball test, even slow swingers got an advantage from the higher compression balls.

That being said, I believe ball selection is like club fitting, combination of feel, preference, and your unique swing.

Even looking at the tour pro's, they range from ProV1, X, Left Dash, Left dot, ect. in the ProV range.

Balls are like clubs, use the one that works for your game.  For example, I am a slow swinging senior and I use balls that are marketed as being for higher swing speed players because they give me the extra spin and launch that I need.  The marketing departments of golf ball companies have to have something to do.  Just saying.

Let me start off by saying sorry for this type of a response.  I am a data nerd.  I love hard data/facts.  What I did to determine the best ball for my level of game (swing speed, performance, etc.), I used the information that mygolfspy produced in their 2023 golf ball tests.   https://mygolfspy.com/buyers-guides/golf-balls/2023-golf-ball-test/ .  If you scroll down to the "Test Data" section, there is a table (actually called a crosstab) that allowed me to filter based on my swing speeds.  I used the data from the driver and iron to determine which ball would give me the best carry and roll distance for my driver, the best carry distance for my irons and which had the highest spin rate for wedge (ability to stop the ball on the green).  I then found the top 3 balls, bought a sleeve of each and tested them to see which one I liked the most.

A lot of great points made but the most important is what you want out of your game and finding a ball to fit that. I thought that I was good with my Vice Pro Plus for years. But i spent my $20 and did a ball fitting at my local golf galaxy and found that I was missing out on distance and stopping power. For reference, my driver swing speed is on the test avg 110 mph but I gained approximately 10 yards of carry by switching to the ProV1x left dash from Vice, but I liked the TP5x off my irons more than the ProV1x left dash with similar spin and distance numbers. So i am currently testing them both out on the course for a couple rounds to get real world comparison data. I am a data guys like @scbelowpar so having both data and feel make a significant difference in the investment. Because both my options are more expensive than what I had been playing. But the data has proven thus far to be worth it.

Honestly a fitting is the way to go here!

Either that or just buy different golf balls of different compressions/layers/covers and test them on your own. This may be a longer process but it does give you a reason to hit the course more haha
