  1. I used to swear by GPS, and it’s all you need on some courses. But if the underlying course waypoint files aren’t right, the readings will be off. *** GPS was great on my old regular course, but way off on some holes on my now regular course. Now that I have both GPS and a rangefinder and play a new course almost every week, I see GPS isn’t consistent - even after accounting for pin positions. And I’ve found the GPS hazards feature can be misleading for hazards that are diagonal, e.g. a water hazard that’s 180 yds right and 240 yds left.
*** Not positive but I think most if not all GPS devices use third party course data files (e.g. Garmin > CourseView, Bushnell > iGolf, ? > GolfBert API), they aren’t proprietary to manufacturers or devices. GPS accuracy depends on how good your device is at picking up nearby satellites which does vary between makes/models BUT that doesn’t help if the underlying waypoint files aren’t accurate - some definitely aren’t.

I’ve noticed sometimes being off by 5 yards or more. That affects my club selection. Within 180 yards are my confidence yards. So if it reads 170, but my range finder shows 157. That’s a club difference. TBH, I’m not great at Golf, but I do want to beat my personal best each time out.

  2. I bought an NX7 Pro (slope) a couple months ago and it’s really useful, my first rangefinder, but it took a while to get the hang of it. The biggest challenge is avoiding picking up background. I glance at GPS first so I have some idea what the distance should be. I sweep the pin back and forth down low. If that doesn’t work, I sweep back and forth on the flag itself, that almost always works. I was on a course with yellow pins and lots of trees in the background Fri, which was tough - so it took a couple tries to get the distance. I have no idea of the big name brands at twice the cost work better. I do know using a rangefinder has saved me a couple strokes a round. GPS is dead on some times, but it’s as much as 20 yards off some times which is a BIG miss on approach shots. Best $219 I’ve spent on golf in a long time (thanks MGS).

I thought I was the only person with this issue. I have used GolfLogix for years and bought this based on the recommendations. I still love it but getting used to mine,

  3. I went a whole season without mine, just hit 3W off the tee. I got really good at hitting my long irons or hybrids to make up distance for 2nd shot. Now I’m straight with my driver, but my hybrids are starting to act up on par 5’s.

It’s a good strategy if you can make up the yardage

  4. Well, I finally reached 8,000 posts........I have been a member of this forum for almost 11 years and it has taken me awhile to get to this level.  Lately, since retirement, I have slowed on my posts mainly because there is way too much content to stay caught up.  I do enjoy reviewed equipment and I do enjoy reading other spies content.  This forum is the best on the web for golfers of all ages, no matter what part of the world they are from.  I so enjoy being a member and hope to be a contributor for another 8,000 posts.

Congrats buddy! I knew ya had it in ya!

My wife and I have been together for 18 years, married 15, and I’ve whittled it down to : I drive the van, she solves the crimes. She tells me where we’re going and when. She also buys all of her gifts since Jewelry, Clothes and perfumes have been permanently removed from the gift list. I’m always amazed how thoughtful I am at Christmas and Birthdays!

  6. My newest clubs are my 4w and 3h. Up to now I had no luck with fairways or hybrids and pulled them from my bag for a while. But that left me with nothing I could hit longer than 150 from the fairway. So I gave it another shot.

It’s still early but so far results have been positive. Today I hit both clubs more than anything else in my bag, and stayed out of trouble. Unheard of for me!

  7. May not be anything to brag about, but a few years back I played in a tournament. I used to get real nervous golfing in front of people that I don’t know.

For the first four holes I was actually playing well, then I 4 putted on a very hard hole location and I felt my confidence shatter. I had a disastrous rest of the round.

My biggest golf achievement in my opinion was that I came back for day two.

I didn’t finish last, because there were people that DNF. I use this story to teach my kids. No matter how tough it gets, to never give up and never quit.
