  1. Well my season has basically come to an end so I thought I would give a final update before going to the offseason. I have really enjoyed the Max LS and have found a decent groove, though I was out of sync last round, but still hit it alright. The sound and feel is still great and love the lower trajectory and spin with this driver. I am looking forward to some off season training and some slight swing changes, just getting a bit shorter as I tend to get very long. How is everyone else feeling about the driver, any more changes or updates. The only change to the driver itself I am thinking of getting the swing weight up a bit as I like the feel of a heavier head.

I reshafted the Epic Speed with an Aldila NV2KXV orange shaft to match the one in my Ping G410. Unfortunately, the result has been quite a disappointment, as all of my metrics are worse than with the stock SMOKE IM10 shaft. I've gone back and forth (4 rounds each) between the Epic and the G410, and the G410 is consistently better. The difference is small, but it is real. Despite the new shaft in the Epic Speed being the same model and flex as the G410, it does not feel the same. The two shafts have the same butt end frequency (within my measurement limits, +/- 5 cpm), though maybe I should do a full profile. It's possible that there is a slight manufacturing difference betwen the two Aldila shafts, but I think it more likely that there is a difference in the head (or adaptor) that accounts for the difference I'm getting. I'm also sure that this shows Callaway did their shaft homework well, and picked the best performer as their stock choice. I really wish the tip adaptors were compatible between the two brands. That way I could eliminate the variable of two different Aldila shafts. I know I could swap the tip adaptors between the two, but there is always the risk of damaging the shaft, and at this point I think it isn't worth any more effort. So final, final result, I'm sticking with my Ping. I'm keeping the Callaway as a back up.

Not surprising to hear the shafts feel different between the two heads. PING is known for having heavier driver heads and Callaway usually is lighter. This means the same shaft in the PING might feel more active than the same shaft on a lighter Callaway head. Still whatever works for you is what its all about.

  3. So I forgot to post about a round about a week ago at Owls Nest it was windy so the down hill wind hole were fun, into not so much. The first hole is straight down wind and I was this close to hitting my first 300 yard drive. I think if I just caught the fairway I would have gotten it. Still loving the Max LS and everything about it. Plenty straight and still long. My only regret is that winter is coming but I am hoping to get some good numbers throughout the winter and might end up being able to produce some cool images I had hoped to have for the review.

One more teaser from the first round Tuesday 🤩

Sure, it was downwind and firm, but flat.. Based on my tracked Arccos data (which, to be fair, is not even close to all of my rounds in the last 4 years...but it's still a significant subset), this is the longest 4 iron I've hit by 14 yards. The next two closest are 251 (this year) and 241 (2017), both also tee shots on a downhill hole at the same course (and I remember the 251 being very downwind).

That's because the S stand for stupid long. Nice ball.

Nice work fellas, I enjoyed reading ALL of your final reviews.  Suffice to say it performed as well as it sounds.

    Nice job everyone!

After attending their demo day early in the year and seeing how well these heads performed with stock shafts, I just knew Callaway had a winner on their hands. Very cool!

    Thanks!!!!!

Great job guys! Looks like Callaway has another stellar performing driver on their hands and I'm glad to see you guys are all going to game them.

Thanks everyone and I agree that Callaway really hit a good one. They really delivered on the low spin in a more forgiving shape instead of chasing the lowest spin they can previously with the Sub-Zero models

  6. I got on a GC Quad to finalize this test and on some good news, I have a winner. The bad new the file export of all the data never made it to me and has been lost, but I at least have some screen shots. I don't want to spoil the final review I will have soon but, its gonna be Epic.

Side note, was playing with ball position to and found a more centered position got my path down to only 2 to 3 out to in, face was about square, and dynamic loft was between 18 to 20, still hitting on average 3 up on it. This combination lead to some 💣s with low 2000 spin and launching around 16. I hit a couple carry 270 and with roll just over 290. Finally, getting that spin right I think could really open some things up here. No more 3000 spin hopefully.

I've only used the Ventus in it at the range at this point.  I put the Motore X in there for the last 3 rounds that I've played and it hasn't done anything that would require me to take it out.  It feels good and seems to be going in a good launch and spin window.  I am still getting used to it, as I can basically set up aiming right down the center or even slightly to the right side of the fairway and swing freely where I'm much more used to aiming down the left hand side of the rough and playing a push or cut shot.

In my last 3 rounds I'm hitting 57% fairways and left 3 shots each left and right.  But that includes fairways and hybrids off the tee too.

    Here's the driver shots only:

    image.png.765334be36075b61fc5312576743cccd.png

-The shortest one at 212 yards hit a tree and came right down on a narrow but driveable par 4.

-The furthest right at 52 yards is on another nearly driveable hole.  I don't even really count that as a "bad" shot.  For reference I may have been 52 yards right of center, but I was also only about 67 yards from the flag, and I made birdie!

-The furthest left was a ball that I hit a beautiful high draw.  It wasn't even overly hooky.  I'll blame that one on me as I was set up right down the middle, and maybe even down the left in autopilot mode.  It ran down into a pond so I had to take a drop.

-Overall for 3 rounds with a new combo I'm really happy.  Once I start with the Rapsodo testing I'll get more data with Ventus vs Motore X and I might toss the Ventus in for a round or two as well for an on course comparision.

That's great to hear. I wish you had done the switch earlier would love to try the Ventus in the Max LS that sounds like a good combo, but I need that 9° head to help me out. Looking forward to the Rapsodo testing.

That's maybe closer to where the true CG is, or its an illusion because of the shaping of the toe.  It's something I noticed as well, but doesn't both me personally.  I always end up setting up with the ball more in the toe area anyway, and not directly behind the chevron.

    But yeah... 💣💣💣 away!

Full Disclosure: this was a downhill tee shot. But also… 💪💪💪

I mean I guess that an ok ball 🤪 Nice drive there really though. Is the Ventus or Motore working best for you on this one.

  9. So I am on vacation so I have been able to play some more and got out on Owls Nest yesterday for an afternoon and the Max LS decided to stop playing around. I had my best driving round in a long time. On the day I had an average of 249, that was with a drive of 211 that was very poorly hit and a 223 that plays massively uphill. Other than those driver almost every drive was at least 250 and had a number over 260. The only thing that prevented bombs was all the downhill holes were into the wind. I even played the driver on a few holes that lets just say it is not needed and on one it is down right silly (white line on the last screen shot is the OB line). The 11th at the course it tight to the out of bounds on the right and a narrow opening to the green, so I pulled driver cause why not. I got the Max LS on the perfect line leaving only about 30 out and got up and down for birdie. Overall for the first time ever I had positive strokes gained of the tee against a scratch golfer.

I did adjust the weight all the way to the draw as right now turning it over is not something I am concerned about. I am looking to keep this going when I get to play my next round, but overall I am loving the driver right now. The SZ Extreme is taking some big body blows and feel the knock out punch might be coming soon...

  10. Got out for another round today with the Epic and things are still going well with the driver for sure. Swing is getting back in shape a bit, though still fitting the over fade a bit, but hit some really good ones. First time in a while I have had three over 250, and two over 260 in a round, still feel there is more there two if I ever play in the afternoon on a nice dry course. Today I also hit some comparisons to the SZ Extreme and it still confirms that the Epic is playing to my game much better.

For the whole year against a 5 handicap I am gaining 0.62 shots per round, this is across both drivers (no way to see SG for each club as best I can tell). Now in the the last 5 rounds tracked with the Epic (I missed one, but I felt I hit it good then as well), I am now gaining 1.53 shots per round with the driver. Still mostly playing on my home course with my same shots. I can only attribute this to the Max LS giving me more control and just being more comfortable with it, as distance is literally the same with the two clubs, the Max LS is the yellow one outlined one below (though that one 295 with the SZ might be skewing this a bit as the LS has seemed longer this whole time).

Getting close to being ready to put this to bed and send the SZ packing, but I have a session with a QC Quad in a couple weeks that I will bring both to and hit some shots with both. Though more with the Epic to hopefully get some good data for some charts I want to build.

I played games on mine. 🤣🤣🤣

don’t want to derail this thread. So here’s an Epic Max LS thought….

it must really be as “neutral” as they say. Because I’m playing it -1 and the weight is in the toe and I’m hitting the same shots as my Speedzone in +1.5 setting.  same shaft too.

have you guys noticed any more or less bias compared to your prior gamers?

I noticed this so far. With it being a bit flatter the pills I sometimes get are much better than with my SZ Extreme even though the 9° should be a little flatter. Just overall yes seems to be more neutral and stable in the Max LS even though the Extreme is also a forgiving head.

Just because you have statistical significance doesn't mean that it is always a practical difference.  Cohen's d basically tells us if that significant differences is small, medium, or large.  .2 = small, .5 = medium, .8 = large.  A difference of 1 would indicate the samples differ by 1 standard deviation.  So the larger the Cohen's d, the bigger the difference is.

Oooo that's a good one I am going to have to use that one for sure.

  13. Just now, GolfSpy_CS said:

Taking out the 95 SS shot for Callaway and your average CHS is 101, Ball Speed is 143, and distance is 257yds.

Still significantly different at the .05 level, and your Standard Deviations are tighter with the Callaway.

    Cohen's D = .9, large effect size.

No matter how nerdy you want to get, it's kicking the other driver's butt.

Oh I am always down to get nerdy love a good standard deviation and significance test using smaple data like this. Though can't say. I have used the Cohen's D, what is that?

Yeah.... seems like a clear-cut winner.

    2 hours ago, DannyDips said:

I was thinking the same thing. When the avg. club speed is lower and ball speed is higher that seems like a significant gain to me.

Yeah though I think that one 95 with the Callaway really knocked down the average and might have been a bit of a mis-read. Still higher ball speed is always good.

  15. I got to the range this past week and did some comparisons between the Max LS and the SZ Extreme and it was not even close. I was still working on the swing a bit so I was not expecting anything great, but it was much easier to control the Epic Max LS than the Cobra. I only have a PRGR but still I think even the limited numbers speak for themselves. The Cobra's days are looking numbered.

Very cool opportunity, and am excited to see user feedback on the coach connect program regardless of whether I am one of those users.

I had been holding out on submitting for one of these until a set of irons came up but actual instruction would really be much more beneficial to my game than new equipment 🤪

We don't appreciate such crazy comments. Of course the irons will help fix everything. 😁
