Sluggo42
Went to a range with grass yesterday, and the grass was hard as a rock, and was virtually impossible to hit off of. Hence, I sucked. Today went to a very nice range, with super nice mats, with longer "grass" fibers. This restored my swing and allowed me to regain my confidence. I mean I was rocking to ball- no bad lies. Obviously we want to hit off of grass at the range but when it sucks- it sucks The point of the range is to groove your swing right? i guess I would rather hit off nice mats than hard dry grass. You? robertson153
The range at my course has both. If I'm just wanting to get loose I hit off the mat. If I'm trying to "work" on something, I hit off the grass(no matter the condition). Most of my misses are "chunks" the mats make it so you can't chunk one. So even though I'm striping them off the mat, I could actually be hitting them fat without noticing. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy Like you I prefer grass for the same reason, the mat can hide a lot of bad shots. The other thing is mats have concrete underneath and it is rather shocking to wrists and body in general. I broke my left wrist last December and this spring before we could hit off the grass, I just didn't bother hitting balls it just caused too much discomfort. Sluggo42
You can hit a crappy shot off the mats too... But hitting off of dry hard grass is just like concrete. revkev
The ground never gets firm enough here to deal with this issue but I remember it from days gone by. Sometimes it was good to build up the confidence that you got from hitting off the mat. I have the opposite issue though. My back doesn't do well or at least didn't with mats. It prefers the ground. Again the ground never gets firm enough in Florida to be a bother. I can see Sluggo's point given that scenario. I would say that there is nothing wrong with hitting off the mat so long as you occasional find some grass to practice off too. butters
Grass ranges usually turn to big sand pits here. Probably is most places use those rock hard mats so that isn't any better. I wish more places would get high quality mats so they can rotate in order to keep the grass from disappearing. STUDque
I find that I can get good work done on a mat but, if I hit too many balls, the bottom point of my swing gets jacked up. Once I get back to grass, I have to figure out how to take a proper divot again. I try to avoid mats at all cost. The only time I'll willingly use them is pre round to get loose with 20 swings or less. MDGolfHacker
I prefer hitting off of grass. Hopefully it will be somewhat representative of the conditions on the course. But, I'll take what I can get so if mats are the only things available, I'll hit off if that. MDGolfHacker What's In This Lefty's Bag? Reesedw
I'm a Grass guy myself.. BUT, there are a couple of ranges that use the better quality mats that i go to for other reasons. Location, price, and practice areas.. I do agree that a lot of ranges turn into sandlots. But I would rather hit off a sand and grass practice area then the cheap nasty leave a green film mats.. Sluggo42
This place is across the street from Tierra Rejada golf course in SoCal. It's a huge driving range with shaded slots, and endless targets with yardage signs everywhere. They also have a short game area, and chipping and putting areas with real grass. They have super high quality mats in two different lengths of grass, and they seem to be double padded, as there is no ground shock at all. They also weed out the crappier balls often, so most balls are decent. It's also a learning center with some good instructors too. So, all in all, it's a good place. Of course hitting off grass is preferred- but not when it's so hard you can't hardly take a divot, and it literally will break your wrists TSr2 on tensi blue stiff Speedzone 3-wood on Tensi blue S Epic Max 5 and 7 woods on HZRDUS Reg flex Paradym 9 wood on HZRDUS reg flex P770 / P790 combo set on Ventus R-6 shafts 6-AW T22 Denim Copper 54°, 58° on Kinetic X Trajectory ER3 or, E.A.S. #4 (“Fang” or “Adele”) ProV1x, or, Maxfli Tour X .Org 14 cart bag Adidas Tour 360 , or Sketcher shoes
Sluggo42
Oh, funny story too- So the range is full of people with varying degrees of skill, but mostly higher cap guys hacking away. So as I'm gathering up and getting ready to leave, DUDE rolls in. Wearing flip flops and surfer shorts and a tank top. A beat up old bag and some beat up clubs. Dude then proceeds to stripe balls with the smoothest pure swing ever. He was insanely good. I love it. Rickp
Ranges here rotate mats/grass. 3 days mats 4 days grass. They have huge grass areas so it usually has time to heel. So you can pick your day and surface. If I go to range Saturday morning which is grass only, my preference. Doesn't bang up my shoulder(s). BTW mats here are pretty nice ones and seem to be changed out frequently.
