Popular Post PING Apologist #9
Placed my USS Arizona flag back out tonight in preparation for tomorrow's remembrance... June 6'th, 1944...75-years ago (yes, seventy-five frickin' years ago!!!) we embarked on what the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe (SACEUR) at that time (Dwight David Eisenhower) called the "Greatest Crusade" to open up the "Second Front" and take the war directly to those f-ing Nazi bastards. Starting in Normandy, on through France and finally into the German heartland, this particular decisive and historical battle would ultimately end the brutal tyranny, slavery and genocide Europe and Russia endured during this dark time of rule by Hitler. The heroes who landed in France 75 years ago in order to do all these things shall not be forgotten...EVER. ALL of them... American, British, Canadian, Australian...I don't care...ALL heroes, and those who died that day and the days following (my Great Uncle included BTW...) deserve a day of recognition for their ultimate sacrifice...for all of us!!! Make no mistake...without them and what they accomplished that day, our freedoms we enjoy each and every day would simply not exist. I stand and salute them all. Join me. ole gray, THEZIPR23, BigtazzGolf and 11 others 10 4 Quote In my DLX Cart Bag: Driver: G410 SFT, set to 9.5*, Mitsubishi Tensei CK Orange 60, stiff (MGS Official 2019 Tester) 3W: G-Series SF TEC, set to 16*, Aldila Tour Blue ATX, 65g, stiff 5W: G400 SFT, set to 19*, Aldila Tour Blue ATX, 65g, stiff 7W: G410 SFT, set to 22*. Popular Post perseveringgolfer
Been watching the build up over the last 3 days and it's heartwarming, heartbreaking and inspiring to see so many still there to remember. Yesterday there were two paratroopers in their 90's who parachuted into France 75 years ago who did the same again with the help of todays paratroopers. They don't make 'em like that these days. Heroes, every one of them. PlaidJacket
I've been following and watching a lot of this myself. I'm a WWII buff of sorts and watch a lot of documentaries, etc. My Dad was a B-17 bombardier. I have several color maps he and his crew used while making their bombing runs over France. They're really interesting to see. They had drawn lines on the maps with red grease pencils showing their bombing routes into and back out of France at that time. I have a few others where the routes are over Germany. tony@CIC
Let's all make a point of reminding our kids what is day was about. "For these men are lately drawn from the ways of peace. They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate. They fight to let justice arise, and tolerance and goodwill among all Thy people. They yearn but for the end of battle, for their return to the haven of home." MaxEntropy
I can't imagine the thoughts going through the heads of these men as their transports started to cross the channel, either in the air or on the sea. Regardless of their thoughts or fears, the bravery displayed was astounding to me. I have become quite a WW2 reader and have a profound respect for these men, regardless of nationality. Visiting the Battle of the Bulge Memorial last year was awe inspiring. I know it's just a movie but the opening sequence of saving private Ryan when the amphibious carrier front dropped is embedded in my head as the nearest thing we'll see to what it must have been really like on Omaha beach. Outstanding bravery which I hope will never need to be repeated. Spookily enough a Google search shows that it's being broadcast here tomorrow (Saturday) at 1pm. Set recorder to record it as I'm playing at 12.45 in the 2nd round qualifier of the club champs.
