I saw an article on the MGS Facebook page about Bryson Dechambeau hitting these clubs. I wasn't really tracking combo length clubs. Anyone else tracking them? I like the concept. I may have to check this out. What say you MGS troops? Below is the company Dechambeau is repping. Thanks MGS Facebook for pointing this out. Let's poll this: How many of you would try this concept out? I would.

I've thought about a 3-length set of clubs (covering 11 clubs, excluding driver, fairway wood, and putter) for some time so yeah I'd be interested in a combo length set.

I saw this and checked out the clubs online.  The concept is super interesting.  They sell both one length and the combo.  Scoring irons in one length and then your long irons in the normal lengths.

I don't know that I like the look of them quite as much as the Edels but then again, they Edels don't come in left-handed, and these do.

It seems like a better/updated version of one length.

I think for those that don't have the speed in one-length and then have those gapping issues which many run into with longer clubs this could be a better solution.

If getting fit for irons, might give them a shot to see how they perform.  Going in, probably wouldn’t be my first choice though.

I play Edel Sl irons.  My SW through 7 iron are all the same length.  The 6-4 are 1/2 inch longer.  I also have Cobra SL hybrids , but they are 3/4 inch longer than their standard SL, but still shorter shafted than their standard hybrids.  So basically, I have a set of three different lengths for "SL" irons/hybrids.

When Edel first came out with SL irons, he did a number of interviews/podcasts and talked about combo lengths.  He was a proponent.  He said it made sense for a lot of players to have the lower lofted irons a bit longer than the higher lofted irons.  He foresaw sets with two and three lengths. The golfer gets more consistency than with a standard 1/2 inch change per club, but the golfer isn't tied into strict single length.

I was fit for my clubs by an Edel fitter.  The extra length on the low lofted irons helped my gapping, but I don't even notice the difference when playing.

I'm glad to see a company pursuing this even though Edel sold.  I'll have to follow the company to see how they do.

I kinda wish I would have waited until I saw this. I just bought new clubs. But I do like the New Level golf clubs I just bought. I might email them and see if they are willing to try to make me some combo clubs. Ya never know!!!

Yeah, I am tracking as well. My pro decided to do this with his two hybrids. I have two hybrids as well. I am thinking about ordering some 5 wood Steadfast shafts and putting them in my hybrids.

Interesting, I’ve only ever seen SL irons and your normal length irons in sets. I’ve got to be honest, if at any point these type of irons were available to hit or get for into, regardless of brand, I’d give them a go. Never know what may work or not work. Although it does beg the question, would the big companies want to venture down that path like Cobra did with their One Length irons?

I read that about one length clubs. I think the combo length would be interesting because they only do the 8-PW or GW the same length.

I would be more likely to try this than one length. But I am not sure I could do all the way down to lob wedge at 9 iron length. Maybe  I could do like a 3 length, LW to PW, 9 to 7 and 6 to 4.

It funny because I tried this without even knowing it was a thing... 1 length wasn't for me as I play 1" longer then standard even tho I really liked the concept. So I decided when I reshafted my irons to try "grouping sizes" and could always trim them down if it didn't work out...

4i 38.5" Standard Length

5i 38.25" Standard Length

6i 38"

7i-50* 37.5"

I will be changing this up soon as I find the PW & 50* to be a tad long causing less control. also will be adding in my 54* & 58*

I would definitely be interested in something like this. I've been wanting to try a one-length set for a while now. They aren't very popular in my area so the used market is minimal. I went to a big box store and asked about them and they only had bad things to say about them.

I would definitely be interested in something like this. I've been wanting to try a one-length set for a while now. They aren't very popular in my area so the used market is minimal. I went to a big box store and asked about them and they only had bad things to say about them.

I don't know if Bryson's playing one length. I did have a friend who was in one length about 15 years ago. He swore by them. I've since lost touch with him (military assignments). The only issue I've heard about one length is clubhead speed. If you aren't swinging hard enough then the 3,4,5 irons lose distance (reminder: this is hearsay and not my factual data). But I haven't tried them. I would definitely try the combo length and emailed New Level to see if they would be able to accommodate me. I just bought clubs from them so ordering 3 clubs the same length from them wouldn't break the bank, plus I wanted to see if the combo setup is even on their radar. I am absolutely crazy happy with my New Level set up right now though. Hopefully I get the email today.

I could play golf every day and learn something new each time.

My fitting is also 1" over. Let us know how you play when you change it out.

Played for the first timer with them this past Sunday. Took a bit to get a "feel" for the shorter irons but it has forsure improved my consistency/miss down the line of clubs which was the goal.

Cant wait to play more and adjust to them

From what I have read he had the custom One Length PINGs and is not trying the Avoda clubs in the combo length.

Everything I've read and watched involving Bryson shows he is big on math and "knowing the numbers" so I could see why he would play both setups. I honestly think its worth a shot for everyone to try but the Combo Length is my avenue to keep distance gaps & consistency

Please do and let us know! Would be awesome to see some of the DTC brands start this.

I tried it with Takomo and they would not hence why I did it to my current irons

Yeah, I think there has to be loft and maybe lie changes. From my little bit of research so far, a builder takes a group of clubs and installs a same length shaft in the group. For instance, 7-PW would have a 9 iron length shaft in in them. I would imagine delofting the 7-8 iron heads and adding loft to the PW. I know New Level can deloft/loft heads so I would think that they would be able to do this, they delofted my irons 2 degrees based on my fit/shaft selection/ball height related to my swing. I also tried working with Takomo, although not on this subject and found that New Level had more options available to me for less. Shipping was free, and shaft selection was better with New Level. I have played 18 holes with them and so far, super awesome clubs. I left PXG for them so that could tell you about how I feel about the irons.

I believe it's quite a bit of change to loft and lie in order to produce the same distances.

That would be cool if New Level could accommodate the combo length irons! Keep this thread informed on what you find out.

I watched a video a long time ago about Bryson making his first set of one-length irons and he said that he focused on spin rates and distances fell into line. E.g. I think he wanted 6200rpm with his 7iron and 7200 rpm with his 8iron (actual numbers might not be quite right). Then distances fell about 15 yards apart for him.

New Level emailed me back. Here's what they said:

Hey Erin,

"Thanks for reaching out. While there is certainly some merit to the science behind this, it's always player dependent. No one in our building does it and I know one golfer who does this personally and it's more because of back issues more than anything else. We feel if it was the way to go, more people than Bryson would do it.

Additionally, to achieve this with realistic swing weights you have to have heads designed specifically for this. Head weights are not designed for the shafts to be abnormally long or short while still matching swing weight so the giant manufacturers can pay to have those made for the few people that buy them or have the means to engineer their current heads to work. I believe this is what PING did for Bryson. They essentially took a 6 iron for the weight, bent it to a 4 and then went to town grinding it to eliminate the insane amount of bounce they added. But then they lose weight again and have added a whole lot of offset, so it's an engineering nightmare. We imagine Cobra isn't going to miss trying to figure this out for Bryson.

Hope this helps.

Team New Level"

This is interesting because I didn't realize there was so much to do with the engineering of the club head. I'm glad I asked. That being said, I am still interested in the combo length concept. These guys https://avodagolf.com/collections/combo-length are doing this and I guess that's why their cost is a bit higher than New Level. This has been a fun topic of discussion.
