Sunglasses! What do you wear on and off the course?

Recommended Posts

I have a pair of Revo for off the course. Mostly for driving. On the course, mostly for caddying, I have a new pair of SunDogs. Couldn’t pass on the discount.

I had an eye injury when I was in high school years ago and afterwards I bought my first pair of polarized Oakley sun glasses. I still have my original pair plus the 3 others I got through the years. The only problem is  I have a wide face and the Oakley frames just don't seem to fit as well as they used to. I resorted to wearing tinted safety glasses from the hardware store because I wasn't going to spend the money on the radar frames.  a few years ago a friend introduced me to Maui Jim Sunglasses. I have blown away with the quality. They are on par or better than Oakley lenses and the frames are very comfortable. I wear them for riding my SxS, ATV, and motorcycle. They don't leak in air and they are awesome on the golf course. I have had the same pair of glasses for 5 years and if I ever need to have them reconditioned and new lenses Maui Jim will replace them no questions asked for under $100. They are worth every penny to me.

...sadly I need a prescription and can't wear contacts so all of the awesome styles aren't possible. It is extremely difficult and expensive to create a prescription on a curved lens. I was able to find a Nike pair with my Rx and I'm hoping they don't break because they weren't cheap.

Kudos to you all with good eyesight!

I’m in the same boat — must have glasses, no contacts.  Just saw eye doctor this morning and will be getting new prescription so the search is on for new clip-ons.

Me? I have a pair of shades in each vehicle. I usually buy whatever is available at TJ Maxx when I need a new pair. I've had multiple experiences of other people breaking my nice sunglasses, so I've given up on having expensive sunglasses. I have a pair of knockoff Oakleys that I got while we were in Colombia. They have lasted much longer than a pair of real Oakleys that I had. I remember the day that I got them. The guy told me that they were 10,000 Pesos. I about flipped! Then, after doing the conversion, I was like "Oh! That's like 3 bucks!" 🤣 I generally don't use sunglasses while playing golf. I always have a hat on, though.

In my collection I have Oakley flak 2.0 xl polarized but more often then not I just use my prescription glasses which are Oakley w/polarized transition lenses. But I also have foster grants, island eyes (gas station glasses that really work) old old old ray bans and a few others that are cheaply made but am a big Oakley promoter and more often than not I will be wearing them

Since I wear prescription lenses, I have to also wear prescription sunglasses (at least until this July when I will be having cataract surgery).  Luckily for me, the guy who actually grinds the lenses and assembles the eyeglasses at my eye doctor's office is as avid a golfer as I am ... and he also wears prescription glasses on the golf course!  A few years ago, he had me switch to wearing Varilux single (distance) prescription Transitions lenses that turn a dark bronze color in sunlight. I wear those glasses exclusively for golf, other than wearing them sometimes when I am driving my car in bright light, because these lenses turn darker even when inside of the car (I believe that the lenses are called "Transitions Hyperactive" lenses).

As for what I use... I use a lot of cheap sunglasses as I do have a tendency to forget, lose or break them. I used to get Oakley or other higher priced sunglasses, but after several breaks etc I have migrated to cheaper options which have still functioned well.

My wife used to go through 4-5 pairs of $5-$10 sunglasses per year and would complain about how she couldn't find anything that was comfortable or that actually worked. She refused to wear a nice pair of glasses for fear of losing them, but I convinced her that if she was conscious of the price and additional quality she'd probably hang onto them a little better. Three years later she still has the same Frogskins and loves them. I guess it all comes down to personal preference, but I've been able to stretch mine out over several years and look at it as an investment in a quality piece of gear.

Needing new ones and this test came at the right time!!!

Oakley Flak 2.0 with the darkest lens I can find for golf and everyday. Look, I have accidentally run these over with my Alphard electric cart. Picked the pieces up and put them back together and moved on. Must have been 2 years or so ago. These things just flat last.

Also have a pair of Maui Jims "Aviator" glasses for going out. You know, because I was a Marine aviator. At my age it's the only thing that I can look cool wearing as every other clothing item makes me look like an overfed old guy.

I have the oakley half jacket 2.0 xl. Been wearing these for about 10 years. Thought about getting the golf prism since I have about 4 extra frames. Any thoughts? Are they worth it?

You should be able to grab just the lenses for a lot less than new sunglasses as a whole.
For golf, I feel they're worth it. Especially if you play a white ball. It really stands out. I switched to yellow this year, so I will use the Deep Water Polarized for that color ball.

I’m an Oakley guy all the way. Like the OP I have too many pairs haha.. I still love my OG flak jacket XLJ, they are my daily driver 99% of the time. I also have flak 2.0, Holbrook, frog skin, and an awesome set of split shot that I use exclusively on the water when fishing.

One thing I will say is for those of you that go through lenses frequently, like I do with tiny humans getting their hands on my glasses, FUSE lenses are worth the investment. I started using them when I could no longer find the G30 Oakley lenses for my flak jackets. Both the prizm and pro versions are really nice and the customer service is outstanding!

I have a pair of regular Fuse lenses in my Half Jackets and enjoy them. I need to reach out to them to see what lenses/colors they recommend for the various ball colors. I have Oakley's answers, but I'd like a second option at a good price from a good company.

Plus, I swear that my Oakley Holbrooks have some sort of melanin absorbing technology built into the frames, because if I wear them for more than 10 minutes I get the deepest white raccoon ninja mask set into my face for the rest of the season.

Any active duty, veteran, law enforcement or first responders out there should look into it!

I've just come to terms that when wearing my Flak 2.0 XL on course in the summer, even with sunblock I'm going to have the racoon face. Just like the "farmer's tan" on my arms and legs, I wear it with pride. 🙂

Oakley Standard Issue is a great site for military, LE, and first responders. Great discounts.

I personally like the Prizm golf lens. It is a little lighter in light transmission but the technology in color enhancement works. My eyes have an easy time adjusting to them whenever I take them on and off. If you are extremely light sensitive I would look for a slightly darker lens.

There is also a Prizm Golf Dark lens that has less light transmission. The regular Golf lens has 30% transmission, where as the Golf Dark has 22% transmission. So if you need less transmission to the eyes, the Darks would be great while still getting the benefit of the Golf lens.

Cataract surgery changed my life!! I had forgotten how much brighter and clearer and more colorful life was while I was dealing with them before I found out it was cataracts. Since then, no reading or prescription glasses at all. So great and worth the extra money for the multi-focal lenses. Good luck with the surgeries!

My favorite demo in the store was popping lens out of the flak 2.0 grabbing the stems and twisting them 180° of each other. It got a lot of reactions from potential customers. The sports frames are border line indestructible. The lens being polycarbonate also means you can hit them with a hammer and they will just bounce around.

Oakleys have always been my go to, but have left them at home before a round and bought Sun dogs in the pro shop and haven’t looked back.  Lightweight, much cheaper and great to play in, I will stick with them.  For 40-50 bucks for good quality, you don’t feel as much pain if you lose, crush or scratch them.   Great visibility in them, and the polarized helps to see the Bermuda/hybrid grain in Texas

Seems like a lot of you like the Maui Jims. When I was in Hawaii I found a pair I loved but could never pull the trigger. I remember how clear the lenses were when I tried them on. Funny enough I still have the screenshot of them from 2021. Now I’m trying not to buy them again..

Oakley sport glasses with "golf" lenses for the course, Ray Ban for driving to the course.  Vuarnet are my favorite sunglasses, but I can't afford them any more!  Best lenses for driving, period.

There is also a Prizm Golf Dark lens that has less light transmission. The regular Golf lens has 30% transmission, where as the Golf Dark has 22% transmission. So if you need less transmission to the eyes, the Darks would be great while still getting the benefit of the Golf lens.

I've got both the dark and regular Prizm lenses.  Dark works better for bright sunny winter days here in the North West where the sun is lower on the horizon all day, making it more likely you'll look up from your shot and into the sun.  Regulars are great for spring and summer.  Still take them off for green reading, though.

EEEeeeyup!  Got the lens replacement surgery last January, and it is the bees knees alright.  Found out my truck is actualy light blue, not white!!!!😋
