I really hope to keep this version of my swing for the next 6 weeks or so.  If i somehow manage it, then it will be a really good performance test between the P7CB's and the JPX900's.

I have a  combo set p790 and p770 previous version.

i bought a p790 7 iron and hit that for a month before buying the clubs.

one thing i didn’t fully appreciate is that the 7 on up have the tungsten weight, polymer black bottom line and flighted fancy ai cg snd 8 and shorter do not.

same for the p770 and I suppose the p7mb does not have the tungsten in shorter irons 8 and down?

so I think doing a fitting and getting measurements from just a 7 iron might not tell you the whole story,

You really have to compare the whole sets club by club.

and there is definitely a different feel and sound between the hollow clubs and the solid forged clubs

so looking forward to this test from MGS where golfers get a whole set of clubs

@Purdyd I'm also curious about how the gapping will work from 7 to the 8 iron with the full 770 set. There's never enough time in a fitting to do so, unless I go back just to get fit for lofts after the fact.

Tracking number... If you're out there... Show yourself!

This would have been the ideal situation, in my opinion. Unfortunately, this is not how most fitters operate. Usually they only have the one iron with the adapter that makes it easy to try out different shafts in one session. I'm definitely interested to see how the longer irons in the P7CBs feel with the tungsten weighting. From the research I've done, the tungsten weighting is only in the 3-6 irons, while the Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) material runs from the 3-PW.

I don't think I've ever been so excited for a review on a club before. Really looking forward to seeing the reviews for the HT4s as I could easily see myself replacing all 3 of my wedges with these beauties.

Do these tests typically have a deadline to provide the review(s) for them?

So, while waiting for the P770s to ship I've been looking at Arccos data for my current gamers, the 2017 P790s. Below table gives some club data (lofts) and Arccos data ('smart distance', % fairways hit off the tee, % GIR and distance from pin on approaches). I plan on using these data as metrics for comparing the P770s once I've played sufficient rounds for meaningful data to be available.

image.png.84ea0eebc6d73463636eaa330979ac8c.png

It'll be important to note the loft differences between the P790s and P770s when comparing distance, but the accuracy will be the bigger factor than distance. Most of the irons show a bias towards being short of the pin. But as I'm always concerned about the P790's propensity for the occasional 'hot shot' going too far past the target, I often come up short as the better miss. I'm hoping to see less of the 'hot' shots with the P770s, making it easier to hit greens and get closer to the pin more often. Time will tell...

Thank for the reminder @Indy_Oz  I had the plan to show the same stuff.

Similarly while I wait, I went over my Shot Scope data that I collected when I got the unit. Using an H4 has been... Okay. I've only got 8 rounds to go off but the numbers are similar to patterns I've noticed even with out it.

Averages - my averages show something that's always bothered me when I play. My gapping in the top end of the bag is really close. And on any given day I'm pulling a 6 instead of a 5 because of wind or elevation or some kind of condition. However I do think the gapping is a bit too close. Especially my 5-6-7-8 irons. For testing I'm really hoping these numbers will settle down a bit. Going from 7-8 without the speed pocket in the 8 iron. I'd love to see that 12-15 yd gap. I have a huge gap from the 8 to the 9 that really throws me for a loop when I'm standing on the tee or fairway from 160-170. 9 won't go 170. But the 8 can go 175 or longer.

Screenshot_20240916_211138_ShotScope.jpg.7a12f0df62efbfc818837a371bf80a9a.jpg

Typically I'm missing greens short and right. More so short, and I'm thinking that's a distance problem being stuck between clubs. Trying to hit a knock down and it comes up short. Or ripping one that goes too high and short.

Screenshot_20240916_211232_ShotScope.jpg.7a229e09bcfc5897c194ec99e84b6b93.jpg

I'd rather see those numbers more even for a left or right miss instead of most of them being short. And I'm hoping that with the P770s being a bit less offset I can get things a bit straighter.

Short Irons - I gain strokes with the short irons. 8 - wedges. And lose the majority of my strokes with the long ones

Screenshot_20240916_211313_ShotScope.jpg.4b0935c9fa3bb630ba5e2d0274bdf6da.jpg

Lastly, my over all strokes gained compared to a 10 HDCP. I gain all my stokes off the tee. Hitting it long is great, but being in that 200-150 yard range really hurts me. I go for almost every par 5 in 2 if I can. Probably an ego thing, but I trust my short game enough to get me out of trouble.

Screenshot_20240916_211357_ShotScope.jpg.88102cc626650f8527ca35b95e143051.jpg

Ultimately. After getting the irons and hopefully getting a few rounds in before the cold settles, I'll be getting into the sim to really work on distances. I'm curious if I'll need to take the irons in to the fitter to get lofts adjusted to fix some gapping issues. Personally, this is something I wish was a bit more looked at when it comes to a fitting. I know it's not really something fitters have access to, but even being able to test a 5-7-9 set of irons could show some big differences.

So apparently pockets are milled in the bottom of the p7cb and tungsten weight is put in one pocket and a light weight metal matrix material in the other and a steel plate covers it.

@Byrnzee knows his stuff

“SD: How many of the CB irons contain tungsten weighting?

MB: There’s Co-forged tungsten in the 3 – 6 iron but the MMC material runs from 3 -PW. Where we use the MMC in the long irons to help maintain a lower CG the umaterial also allows us to remove steel from the soles of the shorter irons, making them more forgiving as additional mass can be repositioned around the perimeter. Greater consistency between shots is exactly what club pros, elite amateurs, and tour players have been asking us for.”

at least the p770 and p790 have tungsten printed on the outside for the 7-3

good luck to all the testers trying this all out!

Was watching an old comparison video today between players irons. Including the '22 P770 and T100 among others. Noticed something a little interesting.

What do you think?

A little similar between the 2, no?

Also how sweet would the '24 P770 in black?

I have a trip to Pinehurst scheduled 10/18-10/20 so I'm hoping to have the new CBs dialed in by then as well! @Shapotomous

My last data finally input. Will be using this in my analysis. I’m very anal about my gapping in my irons (especially as I’m getting older and my swing is lowing down). It has helped tremendously when I was fitted for my new irons last fall. I’m more confident in going up or down a club

I did a bit of digging today and I think I found something worth bringing up.

For my testing I'm of course going to put my current gamers up against the P's, as my gamers are currently what I'm most comfortable with and have the most recent experience playing. But after doing a bit more google searching I think I'm going to tinker a bit with my old Apex's to really put them to the test against the Taylormade's.

The 2015 Apex pro was aimed at the low to mid handicapper. Offering a bit more in the way of forgiveness from some... Tungsten inserts on the sole as well as a polymer insert used for dampening vibrations. Sound a bit familiar. "Hey P770, dont you have those things too?" "Well uhhhh yeah but I'm 2024. There's no way something that came out almost 10 years ago will some close to what I am now..." P770 says as he hides his face (get it. Club face)

I know the P's will put perform my Acer's. Maybe not in distance. Maybe. But in looks, feel, sound, possibly forgiveness. I think the P's have it in the bag. What I'm curious about after my digging is this...

Did Callaway have this figured out with a Polymer style insert for vibrations? Was tungsten in the sole a better play than in the toe? Could I have the possible makings of my own combo set that's just sitting at home, waiting for the right shafts? (Lofts and lies between the 2 sets are extremely close. Like .5 off for lie and loft. Negligible in my opinion). Could we run Taylormade 4-6 then Apex 7-P?  After all. The Callaway has a 10 year old FLTD CG system in it....

I found this little article. And some of the info has me very very interested for testing now. Like rip apart clubs tonight to start hitting the Apex's again interested.

Oh a did I mention... The Apex's are fully forged...

What do you think??Screenshot_20240918_135354_Chrome.jpg.3f183c6ed543932470782de7d133ab26.jpg

... I have only played 3 rounds with my P770's and I need a good 5-10 more rounds to come to any solid opinions. But so far distance is 1/4-1/2 club shorter which is to be expected with weaker lofts and performance is pretty much what I expected. The short irons have been stellar and I see no reason to think of a combo set, something I had considered. However the feel is a bit on the dull side. Maybe it's just in comparison to the T200's or King Tours that both had different but nice feel so it is a little concerning.

... Dead center contact feels as sweet as any club I have played but that sweet spot is evidently very tiny. Missing by 1/8" and 1/4" or even 1/2" that has happened with some bad lies and they all have the same dull feedback. It isn't a bad feel but it isn't a good feel either. I am hoping they are just very solid and I am not used to that feel so 5-10 more rounds should provide an answer.

@chisag when you get those ones that are just off the sweet spot have you noticed any significant distance loss? Or is it just a loss in feel?

... Hard to say at this point as it has been pretty windy for ll 3 rounds, but I think there is a slight distance loss but not significant.

... And I can't complain about their performance. Here is my scorecard from yesterday. Anytime I can par all 4 of the par 3's, my irons are doing their job. (I did miss one of them just off the fringe and got up and down)
