I have been putting horrible as of late. I have never been what I would call even a fair putter, but I usually make putts from 4' and closer. For the last 3 weeks I have struggled mightily with these putts.

I tend to yank everything left. If I try to compensate for it, I just push them right. Why!? What is wrong and how do I fix it?

Seriously though a putter fitting might be helpful. I used to think I needed a face balanced mallet but that was far from the case. May help you as well.

I've been experiencing some of the same. However, in my case I am a good putter. Probably the strongest part of my game. Or was. I've commented elsewhere lately that my short putts have been killing my rounds recently. I've practiced...some. I even bought a new putter (2014 Ping Ketsch) last Saturday. I've got my club championship starting tomorrow and I'm thinking of using my Odyssey Wht. Ice #9. It's the one I've had much success with the past 3-4 years. When practicing with the #9 and the Ketsch I still prefer the look and feel of the #9. I might put the Ketsch up for Trade later but I just don't know what I'd trade it for.

I definitely think having a putter that fits is important, but feeling confident in your putting is probably even more important.

When I feel confident in my play (not just putting), I usually play pretty well.  When something happens that shakes my confidence, it becomes a "self-enforcing loop" and my game goes to crap.

The more I'm able to get my brain out of the game, and not mentally try to "fix" things during a round, the better off I am.

That seems particularly true for putting.  The more time I spend hovering over the ball, the more likely I am to putt it at the wrong speed or jerk it offline.  The sooner I make the stroke, after reading the line and setting up, the better I putt.

So avoiding a new putter, how about trying left hand below right?

Found it cured me in the past.

But, if you don't fancy that get someone to watch you practice for a few minutes? Then ask them to check your basics are right? If those basics aren't right the pulls and pushes can be the subconscious trying to correct. Open stance is always my weakness.

I never thought about my stance. I'll have to pay attention and see whats up. I'm usually an up-right feet close together putter. Maybe I've changed something and I don't know it. Thanks for the heads up!

I've tried the left hand low style a couple of times in the past. I can do it with some success, but it just never feels right.

Joking aside on the new putter, practice is the way to go.  I normally head to the putting green and use the alignment sticks in my bag to make sure that I am square to my line for starters.  Using a few tees as gates to putt through is also a drill that I use to make sure that I am starting the ball on the line I am intending.  I had some issues a few weeks back when I went from a mallet to a blade and it was all in my set up, once I got that fixed it was all good and back to rolling it well.

PS. Don't tell my wife that I actually know how to fix my putting stroke that does not involve a shiny new flatstick....I have a good thing going right now!

Have been on vacation the last 2 1/2 weeks in Maine and New England.  Last day, we were in Paramus NJ.  (who vacations in Paramus????  Wife has a good friend there and used to live in next city over).  Guess what we saw just prior to reaching the hotel--a PGA Superstore!  Stopped in to see the new Hogans (separate posts), but also checked out their putter bin, which has just about everything.  Wonderful store!

Some of you may remember I was selected to do a forum member review of the TMG Ghost Spider Si counterbalanced putter.   I absolutely love that putter, improved my putting immensely.  But, reality is, it improved my mid and long distance putting.  But if I didn't hit the approach or putt within tap in range, I've been having real issues with putts within 6 feet.  No confidence--the optics weren't right standing over the putts and I've been missing a whole lot of putts that I should make from that range.

So, long story short, they had the Spider blade putter at the PGA Superstore and the best store putting green I've ever seen.  Tried the identical counterbalanced putter to my Spider Si except that it was a blade, and a Spider Si, on a bunch of 3 to 8 footers.  Made everything with the blade and had my usual results with a Spider Si (about 60%).  Ok, new putter coming.  To be safe, tried a few much longer putts with the blade.  Wow, most not even close.  Grabbed the Spider Si--made 3 and other 3 were inches from the whole.  Repeated the test--essentially same result.  Damn.

Went back to the rack, saw they had a TM Spider counterbalanced mallet.  Tried that on short putts.  JUST like the blade, made them all!   Ok, now the long putts.  Virtually the same as the Spider Si, really good.  Repeated the whole thing with the three putters.  Mallet turns out to be as good as the blade on the shorts and the Spider Si on the longs.

Don't know why this is, but I'm going to definitely get the mallet.  trade in or ebay coming.

Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts.

4 feet, it's only 4 feet. I think the only thing I have figured out with these is: don't leave myself 4 feet, 6 feet ok 2 feet ok, 4 feet forget it, I cannot see the line to start it on, and therefore cannot start it on the correct line, or I putt it too softly, or hit it with hands of concrete blocks

I find that a slight change in your putting routine is very helpful when you get in a funk like that Kor.a.door.

I know it helps me big time! I ride that routine and stroke out until it quits working and then I usually go cold for a month + trying to find my new one. Not a major change but something different. I remember Ben Crenshaw saying that he had to find a new stroke every time he got to the course. And he was sorta good with the flat stick.

I'm going back to Westy's suggestion with and addendum - just do something different - if you are struggling with short putts and it is most certainly something simple to fix.  Set half an hour aside, go to a practice green and do something different, different putter (most of us have more than 1 of those rascals), different grip, different stance, different ball position, look at the hole, close your eyes, putt one handed, no handed, something different.

Somebody will probably shoot me for this but generally speaking I'm a reasonably good putter and every bit of my putting technique has come from when I was in a slump and done something different that worked.  I also have confidence that I'm a good putter and I don't let a round or a couple of rounds where I struggle bother me.

Seriously though, i will take all your money on the practice green with 4 footers but when I get on the real green I cannot for the life of me figure out how to consistently make those putts, I don't expect to get to the point where I can make 100% of them, but right now my make percentage is about 20, or 1/5, I feel like if I can get to 60-70% made that would be a huge improvement. Getting to that point, that's an entirely different scenario, and I am running out of ideas. I will certainly try changing something, I'm just glad to see that I am not the only person that really struggles with short putts. For me it is the difference of being a 6 hcp, and a 3 hcp. The little things, that have a huge impact on you score

Wo those are scary stats

Well I'd say try a belly putter but that's a bit of a short term option!

Having said avoid a new putter, do you have a centre shafted short stick available to you?

Or a bucket of lead tape to make the head of your putter really heavy?

Both been my successful cures in the past for me.

Have you had a putter fitting? It might at least remove some doubt and help the mental aspect knowing that you have what you need.

Lost my auction for a TM spider mallet 38" putter on ebay with 1 second left.  I don't do the auctions often enough to win those.  Intrigued by the Spider 2.0 mallet.  New, and a $100 more, but supposedly  built for a tour player.  As you can probably surmise, I'll most likely pull the trigger on that one tomorrow.  I tend to be more of a sucker for the new and rare than the really good deal.

You sound like me about 5 years ago. I like westy's idea because it's what I did. I was in Golfsmith one day and went to the putting area and tried several, but nothing ever felt good. I found a used Boccieri Heavy Putter at 31in which felt good. Normal length putters just felt too long for me. But the real difference was the heavy weight. It's heavy but nicely balanced with counterweight. Because it's heavy, it acts like a pendulum when I rock my shoulders. Every other part of my body is still. (I hope!) It takes the short, quick muscles in the hands and arms out of play during the putt.

It might take awhile to get used to it to judge speed, but once you do, it's as good as any other putter. They are cheap on the Bay, if you can't find one locally. Many styles to choose from. Mine is the C2-DF model. I am not crazy about the looks, but I can't argue with results... And looking at the hole on short putts is still working.

I am also trying out a Cleveland Classic 6 belly putter that I am cutting to 32in and installing a counterweight. This putter is a little nicer looking than the Boccieri and the belly version has a 400g head weight. I'm going to start with a 200g counterweight based on Gentleman Mongoose's recommendation. I have always liked mallets so thought I would see if it would work as well as the blade.

A fitting is a good idea. I think I just lucked into my fit. Good luck on finding your solution. Let us know what you find out.

TM spider mallet 38" counterbalance is the putter I have, I do put reasonably well with it, but the short one always give me a difficult time, and it doesn't seem to matter what putter I use... Still searching for some confidence with the short ones.

The only adjustment made as a result of my putter fitting was adjusting the loft to 2*, but just the fact I got fit and feel more confident that I'm using the "right putter," has made a difference for me.  If nothing else, I don't "fidget" as much before I make the stroke.

The adjustment to my brain probably made a bigger difference than the adjustment to the putter ;)

Went to the putting green this morning, pitted about 200 balls from 4 ft. I think I figured a few things out, I'll see if I can carry it to the course. I really concentrated on putting the ball to be hole, hard enough that if I missed I would go past by 3 feet, but i think some of the problems I have been having is fear, I was trying so hard not to putt the past he hole I wasn't getting it to the hole. My line for the putt has been good but a deceleration is causing the missed putts.

I believe I jinxed myself a few months back when I said my putting was the best part of my game. I have not been able to make much of anything all season long and it's totally discouraging to say the least. I finally gave up on my never compromise putter and bought an odyssey metal x #6 with the milled insert. It's here I have to go get it but haven't had the time. I'm going to take my kids out today and practice with it. My all time stats play around 32 which like someone else posted is why I can't get my handicap down more. Doesn't matter if I have a 4 footer or 20 footer, it's pretty much a guarantee that I miss the first attempt every time. Hoping to find some magic with this putter. Unlike most of you I really hate buying equipment. It makes me feel like I am trying to compensate for bad golf.I think for Christmas this year I'm going to ask the Mrs for a full bag fitting. Get any doubts out of my head.

As of last weekend my putting woahs ended. I'd been kind of freaking out coming into our club championship last weekend. Just prior my putting seemed to have left me. I bought a new putter even. However, when the tournament rolled around I had to go with my old tried and true Oydessy #9. Whew. Glad I did. I putting good all three rounds. I'd been missing little short 3-5-6 footers all around the cup. WTH?!! Anyway, I think I'm back in the groove. Such a good feeling.
