Top of the pot spies ☕.  Our trip to the Grand Canyon was fun.  It truly is an amazing place to see.  I couldn't help but think about the first to people to have walked up to the rims and what went through their minds 😮.  My wife took a gazillion pictures (thank God for digital 😄), and she'll be busy for weeks working through those to add to her portfolio.  I spent as much time looking through my binoculars and was able to see groups of rafters on the Colorado River plying the rapids.  They looked timid enough from my vantage point (a mile above) but were likely standing waves.

Here's some pictures from my cell phone.  If you've never been here, consider adding to your bucket list.  Have a great Friday and weekend everyone.

Nice!!  Thankfully, you didn't take a selfie and fall off the edge!  I don't understand people doing that.

  2. Good Morning everyone!!  Hope you are gearing up for nice weekend.

A partly cloudy 70º day today with only a breeze; wish I could play.  The weekend will be cooler and winds will be 20-30mph with higher gusts.  Thrilling!  The only plus is that it might keep some people away.

Off to my cardiac rehab shortly, then errands to run.  I always have my clubs with me... maybe I'll stop at the course for a bit of practice in-between appointments.

Actually I’ve been a member for a while, I just hardly ever post. Started playing about 8 years back and had a few setbacks, but I play whenever possible. I play more now, that I work at Bandon Dunes Golf resort. I’m a PT shuttle driver on property. If you’ve been there and rode on the shuttles, I was possibly one of your drivers. I still don’t have a handicap. I live in North Bend, OR, on the coast, just 30 minutes north of Bandon.
I love playing golf, just wish I better. Still trying to break 100. It will happen. My golf clubs are a mix of different brands, some I bought some were gifts, 95 percent were used when I got them. I love just getting out and playing with friends or by myself, or even with people I just met.

I've been to Bandon but it’s been a number of years ago.  Loved the courses, but I don’t think I could live in the area; great place to visit though!  I loved going to the Oregon Coast when I lived in Corvallis, but even Corvallis had too much rain for me.

Do you get special rates when playing the Bandon courses?  THAT would be a plus!!

... Have any of you run across Stinknet plants on your courses or in your area? It is an invasive plant/weed from Africa called Oncosiphon pilulifer and it has become a huge problem here. I took a trip to a course 1/2 hr away and traveled through barren desert for a good part of the trip. It is almost completely yellow as this invasive plant has crowded out much of the native plants. I saw a feature on these and they were having a meeting to come up with a plan to combat the invasion and basically said the Stinknet had already exploded beyond their ability to combat it. They were going back to the drawing board to figure out what could be done about it.

... This is a picture from just off the 5th tee but it is all over the course.

I haven’t seem it here; but it looks like something that would fit in with our surrounding vegetation.  Our natural terrain outside town is similar to yours.  Maybe it just hasn’t gotten here yet.

If you liked the weight and size of this grip you should try their new zen lite grips. Its pretty much their tour velvet variant that offers all of the characteristics of the jmx ultralite in a rubber grip form. I have it on two of my driver shafts. Durability is far superior as well.

Really looking at reduced taper grips but this one may be worth a test. Thx!

I would be interested in giving the Zen Lite a try, but the collar at the bottom of the grip looks similar to the Winn grips which is very difficult to install with air.  I’ve done it, and won’t do it again.  Not going back to tape and solvent.

What are the essentials in a golf swing? What are the movements, positions and mentality during the golf swing that are needed to be successfully and repeatable?

First of all, the essentials are proper setup with your appropriate grip (being 6’5” means you should get your clubs checked for proper fit), good takeaway (one that doesn’t involve pulling the club to the inside) and backswing with proper pressure shifts, a good transition from backswing to downswing (again with proper pressure shifts), and body rotation.  @RickyBobby_PR knows his stuff and has helped many here on the forums on their swing improvement journeys.  I am also a follower of Monte Scheinblum and highly recommend his videos at rebelliongolf.com.  You can follow him  on Instagram; he posts excepts from many of his videos and has several years worth of posts to review.

here is some context for me so you know what I am dealing with. I sold my driver because I only could hit mega-slices and it would cost me 9+ strokes just by losing balls in the right tree line or hitting out of the forest. My irons I am a chronic topper of the ball. it is rare I chunk my irons. and they also miss to the right but not as bad as the driver.

    My 2 cents… FWIW,

I started playing golf similar to you, but I was 44 when I started (now 76).  My slice was horrible (unless I hit a dead pull left).  I wasted 3 years playing that way before I took a lesson.  Slices are caused by an open club face relative to the swing path, and are typically the result of an over-the-top move during the downswing. That was my problem.  Unfortunately, when we get to the top of our improper backswing, we have too much weight on the trail leg and our first impulse is to swing out to the ball with our upper body.  I did.  The only way to hit the ball from that position is to come out of our golf posture and early extend, otherwise we wouldn't make contact with the ball.  Most amateurs need to have the feeling that the arms drop straight down early in the downswing before we start rotating.  This helps get the club to the ball more from the inside.  It helps to feel like you are keeping your back facing the target as long as you can before starting body rotation.  All of this happens with the proper pressure shifts already mentioned.

While you are a chronic topper of the ball, chunking can also result from the same issues; just a matter of where your body is when you make contact.  Your pressure shift to your lead leg probably comes too late; you should be transferring pressure to your lead leg when your lead arm is parallel and before you get to the top of your backswing.  Video posts both from face-on and down-the-line will provide better analysis, but your symptoms are common to 95% of beginning golfers.

As far as any drills, I would start with Monte’s setup and begin sloooow iron swings; backswing to lead arm parallel and then swing to trail arm parallel; club should be at right angle to the arms… the L to L drill.  Shift to your lead leg before starting the downswing.  Resist the urge to make fast swings.  Patience!

Best of luck in your golfing journey; many of us have done the same thing, so you are not alone!!

  7. We have one private 18-hole course and six 18-hole public courses + three 9-hole courses.  Quality ranges from very poor to pretty nice.  Prices aren’t too bad compared to other places I’ve been lately… Palm Springs and Phoenix; about $40-50 to walk and $60-75 to ride.  Since my wife and I both play a lot, we have an annual couple's membership that includes cart and range that costs $3200.

Prices have gone up since COVID, but that’s mostly due to increased cost of operations and higher demand… new golfers that started playing.  It’s only going to get worse, because in the last 25 years our community has grown from about 150K to about 400K people, and my course was the last “new” course built in the area but that was 26 years ago.  AND it was not a “new” course; it replaced an existing 18-hole course and a 9-hole par 3 course.  The last additional 18-hole course built was 30 years ago.

It is extremely difficult to get tee times, and I expect prices to go even higher next year.  Our most expensive and high-end public course has gone to shotgun starts at 8am and 1pm Fri-Sun.  We need another course!!!!
