Laying down last night, I looked over the course for BSC. I’ve never played this course so I used google maps to come up with a strategy. The course looks tough and should be challenging. We do get 50% of our handicap at the tournament based off the course, which means I will be getting 11. We are playing 6600 yards, slope is 137, and rating is 72.40. My partner and I will be starting in hole 1 and teeing off at 11. I went ahead and  filled out pre-round Journal 18. I will update later with how it all went! image.jpg.ef64b31a1cae1e23f317424771d402a8.jpg

Good luck today!!  Most of all have fun!!!

Played 9 this afternoon with my honey. Nice clear day with mild temps, but a steady wind came in which is into you on a bunch of holes.

    The Good:

    • driver - 7/7 were good or playable
    • ball striking in general
    • one 8i approach got knocked down by a strong just, but hey it was a solid shot
    • one 9i approach from 110 on a ball below the feet lie hit the green to about 8ft past the flag - made Birdie!! (.. well it is the shortest Par 4...)
    • Putting - speed control was mostly pretty good on all the first putts

    The Bad:

    • Green reading - was consistently over-reading break
    • The two short Par 3s - not hitting my irons here solidly and missed both short right...
    • Didn't lose a ball 😂

    The Ugly:

    • Short game wedges. No B's I honestly practice with my wedges way more than full swing, but I just farged (fancy Brit term 😆) every short near-green approach.....

    The Lucky Save:

    • My wife claimed this honor after struggling a bit on the last hole .. then landing in a greenside bunker .. from which she hit too hard and the ball ran out and into the rough behind the green .. and from there she just kinda drops the putter onto the ball .. without really lining up it or anything .. ball rolls downhill towards the cup .. slows down .. takes the break .. BAZINGA!! .. into the cup and a "zero" putt hole for her!!

Anyway like I say in the Practice thread ... Work In Progress!

Oh PS: had been playing the MaxFli StraightFli "value" ball early in the season but today switched back to the usual MaxFli Tour CG - what a difference!!

I mean even I could tell that I was losing distance with the value ball .. I'm totally guessing here but I'm thinking that to enhance "straight" they modify the aerodynamics and possibly also slow it down in an attempt to control side spin..?

You have made a lot of progress Chuck!!  I remember your early posts where it seemed like a struggle just to get to the green!!  Great job!  Looking forward to Kingsmill next month… yes, we can now say “Next Month”!!!

Did you teach Lisa the Monte putter shot??  Martha has been using it; in a round with the Ladies League she had a difficult downhill shot in the rough just off the green.  One of the ladies made a comment how hard that shot was… she dropped the putter onto the ball and the ball trickled down to tap-in range.

  3. I only know roughly how far I hit any club; not precise carry distance.  I am not that good to hit any club consistently the same distance.

What I do know is how far I can’t hit a club.  Using GPS I know F, M, B distances, and when I know the back distance, I know what club will not go off the back; same goes for a layup shot… hit a club that I can’t get to the water even of I flush it.  I will usually shoot for middle of greens, knowing that mishits could still be on the front.  I will use the front number on some greens where there is no trouble short and I would rather chip than have long, downhill breaking putt if I don’t hit the number.  My strategy.

This simply isn't accurate.  Beginning in 2020, the hole handicap indices are recommended to be based partly on the "difficulty" as determined by the rating, but are also recommended to be adapted for a few other factors, and are subject to an individual course's Committee review.  We recently decided to revise our indices, and got the recommendations from the Virginia State Golf Association.  The first factor is the "difficulty value", defined as the average of the bogey and scratch ratings compared to par.  Our 4 par-3 holes ranked as 10, 6, 13, and 18.  The 205-yard 4th hole's "difficulty value" was 0.44 strokes higher than the 470-yard par-5 18th hole.

Agree.  Our course “Committee" changed the ratings for several holes a couple of years ago.  One relatively short par 4 used to be rated #3.  It had water all down the left side of the fairway that also ran in front of the green; to the right of the fairway is rough that are high grassy mounds.  Serious lie issues and carry over the water means no guarantee getting over the water.  The green is no bargain once you get there avoiding a massive bunker on the right and a deep pot bunker just over the water in front.  The “Committee” which is the pro, asst pro, and Men’s Club players decided that it didn’t deserve to be rated #3, so it was changed to #7, because for the better players it’s driver or less and a wedge.  I think it’s probably the hardest hole on the course for the bogey golfer.  I’ve seen scores up to 11.

As for par 3’s we have 5 of them; two on the front nine (par 37) and three on the back nine (par 35)  The ratings are 13, 9, 10, 4, and 16.  I don’t think the ratings for these par 3’s was changed much, if any.

Since most of the rounds played by the Men’s Club are played from the Blue tees and not from the Black tees, the hole ratings were assigned based on their hole scores over the course of a year.  So, one thing to consider when looking at the Hole ratings is what Tee was used for the rating.  In our case it is not the tips!!  Playing from the White or Senior tees, I have a completely different view of hole difficulty than from the Blue tees.

  5. Been playing the Callaway Epic Max 3W and Heavenwood for the past couple of years.  3W has not been a good club for me until I bought this one.  Bought the Heavenwood first and loved it, so decided to try the 3W.  The Heavenwood is fantastic out of the rough.  The key will be finding the right shaft IMHO.

  6. During the late fall - winter - early spring, I like to start a little later when the temp warms up a few degrees… every degree helps.  In winter it’s a crapshoot because frost delays mean later starts and if we have a later start anyway, then tee time is pushed into the afternoon unless there are cancellations.

In the spring - summer - and early fall we always play early to avoid the heat.  Can get to 100-110º by noon.  Doesn’t bother me, but my wife is prone to heatstroke.

Good morning all! Little one got up at 5, wife wasn’t thrilled so I got up with her! I’m ok with it, I love watching the sun come up over Tims Ford Lake! Going to play Bear Trace with my FIL at 9, looking forward to that! Hope y’all have a blessed day! Be the BLESSING!

Have fun today!!  Loved playing Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain when I was still working in TN.

    Good morning everyone!

I'm enjoying some coffee and trying to get energized for the day ahead. I think the wife wants to run some errands later and we'll get to hang out for a bit.

I know I'm starting to anticipate the Kingsmill outing as I was dreaming about it last night. At least there's only about 60 more days to go before we all tee it up together.

I hope you all have a wonderful day!

So… how many under par did you shoot?  😃
