sp0rtsfan86
Me personally: I've been in a similar situation. Course tournament, 4 rules officials, no one near. Is it a par 4 or a double 6? Keep playing and figure it out. But with all those rules officials? Come on. Credit to Joe Buck, he nailed it. They made up their minds before the 12th tee. Simply tell him look we're giving you a stroke penalty. We deemed it that you moved the ball. Seemed like they just were out to prove a point rather than get on with it. Whether or not he moved the ball is irrelevant in a sense. The rules are there for a reason. Either apply that rule and be done with it, or rule he didn't. No reason to have a chat and all that other garbage. Make a decision USGA. Have a spine. also great job at Oakmont. Truly a great course and great environment for the open. Hands down one of the best I've seen. Driver: Epic Flash 12 Degree Wood: GBB 3 Wood Hybrid: Razr 4 hybriid stiff stock shaft. Irons: X2 Hot 4 iron (pro version) 5 iron - Gap Wedge (non pro version). SPY VIP The Dansome Posted June 20, 2016 SPY VIP Share Posted June 20, 2016 They'd obviously made up their minds prior to warning him on 12. Sproutland
They'd obviously made up their minds prior to warning him on 12. Only explanation at that point for not giving him the penalty then is a witch hunt. They wanted the world to know they thought DJo is a liar. There is another explanation. The USGA knows DJ is a bit of a head case and they didn't want him to win, so they put this uncertainty in his head. He plays the rest of the holes as if he is -4 and everyone else plays like he is -5. Huge potential for meltdown and a more "fitting" champion. Did anyone else notice the beeper go off just before his approach on 18? He looks right back at the camera, steps up, and nukes it to 5 feet. Just seemed like the USGA was trying to get in his head. SPY VIP The Dansome Posted June 20, 2016 SPY VIP Share Posted June 20, 2016 I highly doubt a conspiracy targeting one player, specifically DJo, but I wouldn't put it past them in an effort to protect their precious par. revkev
Like Undershooter I was not watching live (I was having a blast on the golf course with my son) so I stayed away from the forums. Not much to say other than the USGA is the most creative organization when it comes to putting egg on its face. With MLB being a very close second BTW. You can't have a rules official make a ruling on the 6th hole and then come out to say that you might be over ruling him on the 12th hole oh and then go throughout the course telling everyone in contention that they may or may not be a stroke closer to the lead than you think. Why not just have a blind draw at the end of the round and the one closest to the score picked wins? Better yet how about keeping the greens a bit more playable so that this can't happen - what a novel idea. Is there any possibility that a casual fan who happened to tune in will ever watch a golf tournament again or for that matter even begin to consider playing the sport after that fiasco? Remember that fan doesn't realize that the greens at his local muni or country club aren't like Oakmont. He doesn't know that he and his buddies can make their own rules and have a great time. He thinks this is what the game is like. The virtual hole technology was beyond cool - it even got my kids interested in watching some just to see it. There's a point where it just gets kind of silly how fast the greens are and if they aren't crossing the line then they are at least awfully close. Props to DJ. Happy he pulled it out.
