For this edition of WIYB, I thought I could add a unique twist to this topic since 100% of my set was purchased through wheeling and dealing on eBay. For me, it's the best way to get quality equipment on a budget. I used to be TM from top to bottom due to brand loyalty and it really won't be long before I have no TM at all. I'm enjoying having an open mind to all options on the market.

Here goes:

Driver: Titleist 915D3 Aldila Rogue Silver X

$160 used

Picked this up this season to try and find more fairways. I'm a big hitter off the tee but am also prone to big misses.

3 wood: Ping i25 stock X-flex

$80 new

For me, this club absolutely stings the ball with drawing line drives. It's my first ping club and I'm very impressed.

Driving iron: Mizuno MP-H5 stiff

$40 used

Replaced a hybrid to get this iron. Off the tee it's money in the bank on those holes where I'd run through the fairway using anything longer. Also my first Mizuno club.

Irons: Taylormade Tour Preferred MC stiff with white/black Golf Pride MCC

$600 new and already extended .5"

Had these for about 7 years now (almost as long as I've been playing) and they're still in fantastic shape. The only chatter is from when I used to schlep my clubs around the course.

Wedges: Titleist Vokey 56, 58, 60 with Orange Lamkin Crossline

$185 used

Existing thread https://forum.mygolfspy.com/index.php?/topic/20168-How-do-you-know-when-it%27s-time-to-replace-your-wedges%3F

Had these 3 years now and finally got the length and lie adjusted (stubbornness trying to save a buck) and I'm suddenly attacking pins like you should be.

Putter: STX SS6 with Super Stroke slim 3.0

$40 and $20 for the grip

Had this putter for 3 years with moderate success before adding the super stroke. That grip changed my whole golf game.

*Irons/wedges are +.5" and up 2*

**All grips mid size

***Driving clubs Lamkin Crossline

One thing that should be noted is I sell the clubs I'm replacing for usually net zero or even a profit. With my profits, I also bought my daughter a bike and my wife a necklace (for brownie points of course). Here's some tips I have:

1. Auction patience is key. Don't fall victim to the sunken cost fallacy when the bids start flowing. To that end, it helps to watch a few finish without bidding so you have an idea of what the true market value should be.

2. Search broadly and wade through the hits to find those diamonds in the rough.

3. Take advantage of weak listings. For instance, the driver had a number of missing details and inaccuracies. I messaged the seller to confirm the correct information and stole the driver. I watched 3 auctions the same week for the same driver finish north of $200.

4. Be open to all options on the market. When searching for a driving iron, I was all about the TM UDI. Couldn't afford it and broadened my search to all driving irons to find this gem of a Mizuno (after I vetted it through sites like MGS).

5. Be as descriptive as possible and fill out every single field you can for your listings. Also be sure to take lots of pictures that give every view possible.

6. Search eBay before buying in store. I saved $40 buying my putter online

I hope everyone finds this useful. Thanks for reading.

Oh! Btw, here's the headcovers

We have the same philosophy on club purchasing. If you buy brand new, the first time you hit a ball it's USED. Why not buy used and save 1/2? But you need to do research and work at finding deals.

I'll let my mom know you like it. I had her knit it for me when I first started playing. May be time for a fresh one.

It almost becomes a full time job researching clubs when it's time to buy. Another nice thing about buying used is there's plenty of data out there for people real world experiences.

I always try to buy clubs used or a year or two old. Your money goes a hell of a lot farther doing it that way. I typically use eBay and global golf.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have a hard time finding clubs that fit me on global golf. It really irks me that they use stock photos instead of actuals.

Yea that's the only bad part with global is you don't get actual pictures. Some value condition that I have ordered looked brand new and others have been used quite a bit. With the prices and sales they have sometimes it's worth the risk.

Not yet. I try to ask sellers questions about the clubs to get a feel for their intent and stay away from international sellers. The buyer protection is pretty strong as well.

Great job! I'm in the same category as you...sell, buy, sell, buy... what led you to your current setup? Did you know what you wanted and then searched for the deals?

In most cases, I identify the club I want through careful research reading forum entries to see how they perform against what they advertise. Then I do a search to identify what the market price for that club truly is. If it's too high, I search for another similar club. If it's close to what I'm willing to pay, I search for good deals.

My problem is there's not many places to demo clubs with X flex shafts so I have to trust what I find online. I try to sell my clubs before they get too old and totally lose their value so I turn the set over fairly regularly.

Great topic and a smart way to buy clubs!  I haven't used ebay but have bought through trading in on used equipment.  If any of you are in need of finding single iron replacements, try out www.clubfinders.com*.  You can also purchase used iron sets as well as buying a full bag from their selections or drivers, fairway woods, etc...  My current setup consists trades, garage sales, and close-outs! Like someone posted earlier, if you buy new and hit it once, it's USED.

*I am not affiliated with Clubfinders but they do sell great used equipment and have great customer service!

Do you get a decent return on investment when you trade your clubs back to that site? When I sell mine I usually get at least 75% of what I paid for it and have even turned a profit a few times.

For this lovely TBT, I thought it would be cool to go back and update my WITB post. Unlike you ho's, many of the clubs are the same with slight tweaks. The little custom pieces keep these clubs feeling fresh.

Without further ado:

file-79D427A4-B62A-40E6-BDC7-02A61CAB5709-33946-000009A844086502.jpg

The driver is new to me. Ping G30 LST. Picked it up in the fall due to many reports that the G30 was still as good (if not better) than any of the recent offerings. G400 may be better but I'm not in a rush to change. Got a good deal on this puppy especially considering the shaft: Graphite Design Tour AD-BB 6x. I'll just say this, golf is a lot easier from the fairway.

file-896790F1-B1B2-4EAC-B36D-913B09DF868E-33946-000009A84283A916.jpg

file-5E7F5324-ADDD-43F0-88E5-510F2189B238-33946-000009A84186105B.jpg

Ping i25 3 wood still stands. It's super hot but I'm on the prowl for a deal on the F7/F8 fairways now that I've gotten a taste of the hybrid.

file-853DCBE3-652E-421F-861C-47DA87C9EA96-33946-000009A842074A43.jpg

This Cobra F7 3-4 hybrid was worn when I got it (partially why I got such a deal on it) but this one is AWESOME. Can play it off the tee for an easy fairway and it goes high enough to stop on the greens. I've finally got some stability on this slot and it feels good.

file-58183CA0-D09A-4FBA-8D5E-24AE1BFA5368-33946-000009A8466475A6.jpg

file-EE3C1C96-E31E-445F-984D-3991FA07736F-33946-000009A845CBFAE0.jpg

Irons are still the TM TP MC and the wedges are still the Titleist 200 series. The irons are still in fantastic shape besides bag chatter (despite being 7 years old). The wedges are holding up but very worn. Have sharpened the grooves a few times to keep life out of them but I'm pretty sure the grooves are non-conforming by now. The only thing new about each of these is a little DIY paint fill action.

file-E05598CA-DEF2-4F56-915D-D10B849C120B-33946-000009A847E3E621.jpg

Then I've got new grips across the whole bag, PURE Pro midsize. I'm a label down guy. Love the look and they've helped me a lot with my hand position. The only one I didn't change was the hybrid because I'm mashing it right now with the grip the previous owner had on it. Also, KBS was nice enough to send me fresh stickers to replace the ones that were falling off my Tour-S shafts.

file-81DA9F9E-22DF-4087-A15C-6E6FBE418E0E-33946-000009A840C324F2.jpg

Then I've got this great ball marker to support my alma mater and the 2 tee heights I use. I don't like using any other tees besides these so I'm not a tee box searcher.

file-D074CEC9-9AB8-4520-8F1A-8FBD09036E1A-33946-000009A8498B89C2.jpg

Lastly, my beast of a push cart and cart bag. Clicgear 3.5+ goes with me everywhere I go and the Ogio Pisa holds them tight. I got the Pisa because it was built for push carts and it has not disappointed. Then everyone knows how good the Clicgear.
