Divothead
SO I`m a fantastic ball striker I have shot 75 (SS70) with 40 putts early on in the season. I usually hit 14 greens per round average and I simply do not hole enough birdie putts, Now, whats a birdie putt ??? when you have had eight putts under 16ft for birdie then a true putter should bang at least 4 of them?? shouldn't they?? AM I too hard on myself? When you hit a lot of greens in reg you are going two putt more often. I shot 72 +1 hit 15 greens 35 putts. A while ago shot 72 hit 9 greens 28 putts. I want to hole 50 percent of 10 ft putts And 9 out of 10.. 6 ft and in putts. This winter which is starting now things are going to change. I'm going to see a putting coach and learn how to roll the ball true i draw a line on the ball and after I putt the ball the line often wobbles. This needs to stop I need a pure roll for better distance control. I'm not a bad putter overall I just won't settle for OK. Wedgie
I was watching the PGA event earlier and Jon Rahm was 9 of 9 putting from 10-15' for the week. I'd guess that is better than the average tour level guy. Also read the blog post regarding the accros CEO. He thought his putting was bad but it turned out he wasn't getting close to the hole. Check it out and it may not be as bad as you think. TSauer
I think it's probably the hardest part because it's the least focused on part of the game, imo. Most people want to be able to drive the ball super far or stripe their irons shots, that they don't practice putting as much as they do everything else. I've been putting A LOT of work into putting and I'm finally getting more confident on the green than I ever have before. I'm going to agree with excourse and say driving is the hardest part, at least for me. If I could drive as well as I putt, I'd be ecstatic. Woobie
I finally relented. After suffering very nervous putting for a year or so I finally stumped up the cash and had a putting lesson.....best $80 I spent for a long time. The local pro quickly identified a very weak grip style. We spent 10ish minutes trying to find a stronger set up that didn't feel too foreign to me and then half hour of drills and technique, and what do you know from previous round of 5-3 putts with 3 of them coming from inside 5 metres to NO three putts with 6-8 putts from outside 6 metres and even made all 6 putts from 5 ft or less ( A miracle for me)! I even had an eagle putt from 20ish metres which I left 5ft above the hole and got the birdie! Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

Zylem
I can agree about it being the most over looked part when practicing. I am guilty of this, Everytime time I say I am going to spend an hour on the practice green. But I get out there start going through my routine and what feels like an hour is only twenty minutes.... I shrug it off and start to work on my chipping game. As for it being the hardest part of golf, I don't know. I always felt like the approach in to the green is the hardest part. It seems like the greatest players have the ability to get it close from anywhere. Be it in regulation for a birdie attempt or up and down for a par save. Which, in turn, makes it looks like they are amazing putters. This part of practice is what I am very guilty of skipping. I will knock 7irons all day to my maximum distance on the range but I never practice taking a few yards off. Being able to shave off 3 yards could turn a twenty foot putt into an eleven foot putt. And that is why I expect more from myself. Perhaps I might be ambitious with the numbers I require to achieve but everybody loves a hard worker. I think the pros know each green like a someone that putts on the same green each week. they have detailed books with all the slopes and contours of the green and each week the greens play at roughly the same speed. Like you, I think people think they are much better putters than they are because they show the leaders who are making the putts and just like us, they get on hot streaks. Rusty1885
I agree putting is not easy. Most people also take the complicated route to solve the problem. My approach is simple I stopped focusing on long putts and only focus on 6 foot in. I cut my handicap in half twice from 4 to 2 and now 1 since I take this route. True that many high handicappers don't take enough break I think that many mid and low handicappers playing too much break on their putts. I stopped all of the over reading and playing too much break and just play a few inches from the holes unless it's obvious. The combination of my short putts confidence and simple approach to green reading my putting improved.
