Ditching the Hybrid

Not sure how you can correlate lie angle to player ability. Clubs are fit to the player. If a club is too upright when the player takes his stance the toe will come off the ground and close the face making pulls more likely. Too flat and the heel comes up and the face points right. There is no standard for lie angles from club model to club model much less from manufacturer to manufacturer.

See this demonstration, when a player lowers and raises the handle to setup to the ball. The lie angle doesn't change, just how the club is positioned

https://www.instagram.com/p/BfIvm8jF0iz/

Speaking in generalities I would say the draw bias if hybrids is more related to the head design to counter the fade most players have with longer irons. From what I remember when looking at hybrids a while ago most had a closed face angle. As hybrids have become more popular you are seeing more models with a square face.

Yes - "Pro" model hybrids generally have an open face angle compared to the standard/non-pro versions (and generally come with a heavier shaft, too).

I have been back and forth on hybrids

I hated them for awhile, then I got a set of Bridgestone J40 hybrids...a 2 and a 4 and those were "magic wands"...nothing but high straight shots with them.

I added an XR 5 hybrid a few years ago and hit it pretty good too

now I have a Cobra 4 hybrid that I am hit and miss with it......I tend to pull hook it off the planet when I miss it.

I'm really surprised to see you say that. The F7 hybrid has been a total game changer for me and absolute money in the bank.

Before I got the F7, I was extremely hit and miss with any hybrid/driving iron for the past 5 years (before that, it was a 2 iron).

Here's my contribution to the thread: If you're having trouble hitting hybrids, you probably just haven't found the right one.........yet. Don't give up the search!

I have a hybrid that rotates in and out of my bag. I probably need to look at a new one, but have yet to fall in love with one. I find I'm more consistent with long irons, but as I said they rotate in and out depending on the day and the course!

I do have a old burner rescue that other then needing to be regripped has worked well in the past... maybe it will make a return this season!

I am ready to get to Austin in the next few months and go through a fitting for the upcoming Edel driving iron. I hit my hybrid VERY well, but I think the Mizuno MP-18 driving iron is creeping near the distance of the hybrid. I need to get the right gaps, and have the right clubs. Who knows, maybe I'll be ditching a hybrid!

I'm in the process of moving my hybrid as well. I picked up a g400 3 crossover to put in the bag. I've been to inconsistent with the hybrid and I think this change will help me tremendously.

Same here. My Tour Edge HL3 ironwood should arrive tomorrow. It SHOULD make me more consistent than I am with my current hybrids.

I gave it another try with the hybrids at the range yesterday, and I hit maybe 2 out of 10 shots. The rest were all over the place.

Sounds like my experience with hybrids. I've tried several times to move to one, but none of them have managed to kick my 2 iron from my old Eye2 set out of my bag. I'll take a little shorter and lower, but straighter, all day long.

It's too early to know if it will be my solution. But I hit the ironwood at the range last night and it is definitely an improvement over my 3h. Can't wait to try it out on the course, hopefully this weekend.

I feel I have given hybrids enough of a chance but these things don't work for me. I'm at a loss as to why. Perhaps I just need a fitting but I've tried small head hybrids; larger, almost fairway wood sized hybrids; both stiff and regular flex shafts and I've not found one that I am consistent and fully confident in. I have full confidence in my 3-wood as well as my 4-Iron, but that spot in the bag between the two I'm lost.

How many of you have switched from a hybrid to one of the new driving/fli hi irons that seem to have become pretty popular in the last few seasons?

For now, I'm just shafting up the 3-Iron again and it's going back in the bag.

I'm with foreverdank.

When hybrids didn't like my game, a lofted fairway wood and a forgiving driving iron worked out best for me.

Nothing wrong with hybrids, of course, but if they're always going to be fighting you, there are alternatives.  We played a long time before TaylorMade introduced those orange FireSole Rescues.

I ordered the 3 & 5 Hybrids with Recoil 660 shafts t9 match my irons. My issue is I tend to pull or hook these. I experimented with weakening my grip and was successful in straightening out the flight. I also tried open club face. Both worked.

The problem, Foz, is that we're supposed to do those things to play a "golf shot," not to hit a straightforward routine shot.

My perpetual gripe about modern equipment--what good is advanced technology if they can't do much about fit?

Fit isn't just what shaft to choose from launch monitor data.

Fit is correct lie and face angles...first.

The major OEMs have no interest in following the lead of boutique clubmakers who do offer changes to lie and face angles...and loft as well.

Another thing to realize, is that we are talking about 200 yard shots. I don't care what club you are hitting, there are a lot of things that can and will go wrong.

I doubt anyone is a steady green dancer at 200 yards, I know I'm not.

It's a natural reflex to swing “harder”, and bam, you're already in trouble. Every push, pull, draw, fade, is magnified due to the extra length.

I don't think there is a “magic” Hybrid, that's gunna go straight every swing.too many variables in live play. Most complaints are “user interface” problems.

I started the summer with one swing, after 18 months absence. I had 3 wood, 3-5 hybrids. Then I got injured and while I was recovering, still on going, I had to change my swing. Suddenly the hybrids and FM's that I was loving were going hard left.

Of course the problem was me, not the hybrids, but I have now gone back to MP FLI HI's and regular irons on graphite shafts to replace all of these.

I like the forgiveness of the hybrids, but the misses with them are simply too costly. A miss with the iron like clubs for me will be a shorter, sometimes much shorter, shot but still straight. While a mis-swing with the hybrid will go 30-40 yards left and often into a hazard or off the planet.

Plus the less forgiving clubs cause me to be more conscious of them and make a better swing.

I know that's the thing with me - there's just something about the shape of a hybrid that confuses my already confused brain. I can hit fairway woods just fine with full confidence. Hybrids? Nope. I've lost count of how many I've tried.

How many of you have switched from a hybrid to one of the new driving/fli hi irons that seem to have become pretty popular in the last few seasons?

I'm a driving iron fan, but I don't see it as being a hybrid substitute.

The hybrid is a fairway club that you can use on the tee,

The driving iron is a tee club, and you'd better be a hell of a long iron player to use it on the fairway.

For me, the driving iron was a one-trick-pony, but I always believed in one-trick-ponies being a legitimate segment of the bag..

Funny, I can't hit my driving iron off the tee but can hit is really well out of the fairway. I have had to stop teeing it up and hitting like a fairway shot on the tee.

That's something, GB13.

I don't tee anything up high.

About a quarter to three-eighths inch high for woods (which is why I don't hit a big body driver).

Down to the tee's cup for irons.

The problem with driving irons from the fairway, in my case, at least, is anything but a near perfect lie is a killer.

The lofted fairway wood is better for me from the fairway.

I keep saying is instead of using the past tense. Stubborn.

Yeah, any tee height makes me hit it high on the face and I end up with a knuckler that goes 150 yards shorter than it should. My driving iron shots are ugly this way but the end up in the fairway, a pretty good distance, so whatever works I guess. I tee up all of my other irons though, so I might just be crazy...
