cksurfdude
Physically, it doesn't get any better with age with two knee replacements, a severed bicep tendon, bad shoulder, bad hip and bad foot. I still walk 4-5 rounds a week, stretch, and try to watch my weight, but the handicap is up 10 shots in 10 years so it becomes a matter of adjusting goals and expectations. My weekday group of about a dozen guys has several guys recovering from various surgeries, backs, knees, hearts, etc. Now for us, the golf becomes more of a chance for fellowship instead of intense competition. We're still competitive--but it's not the important thing any more. Awesome..... Really admire the "walk 4-5 rounds a week"! It's great to be out and playing, isn't it? cksurfdude
The past five years have aged me greatly. I have ankylosing spondylitis, which takes all of the curvature from one's spine, so after every round I'm SUPER stiff. Even mid-round I can tighten-up riding in a cart. This has affected my swing and my swing speed. When I was st Callaway in Dec of ‘13, I was swinging the club 112-113, now, if I hit 108 I'm happy. It doesn't help that I ride in a car for work, which tightens my hips, and low back even more than the disease causes. It's been rough. The outside looks about 40, but the insides feel about 68!!! Rickp
I'm 71 and halfway to 72. Lost distance you betcha. A decent drive now 230, 7i is 145. Having said that I used to walk but had to give walking the course do to knees and hip problems about 5 years ago. I do the gym thing about 5 days a week and it's helped maintaining strength. I look at the guys I play with some older others younger and all are losing their distance also. It's inevitable gotta do what you can. gaussman1
. Compared to what? Not sure if you're having a Jack LaLane/Chuck Norris moment here, but I'm having a hard time believing anyone suggesting they hit it as far as they did when they were 40. ... or 30, or 20. But I guess my point would be that IT catches up with all of us, sooner or later - and while you might not have "noticed much of a loss" this year, I'm afraid that all of us wake up one day and realize that our younger days are behind us, and all the Nugenix and active lifestyle bs ain't helping slow down Father Time. ... And I think that's the OP's point too. As other posters have noted, of course exercise is important in retaining flexibility and to fight injury - in addition to warming up on the range pre-round instead of rushing to the first tee from the parking lot. ... You did mention fittings, which is a good idea too, as we're also never going to be as strong as we once were, and getting into the proper shaft we can actually get to kick and work behooves trying to hit the rebar-shafted clubs of our youth. I'm turning 49 in a few weeks and honest to God I'm as long through the bag as I was in my 20s and 30s. Now of course my current 7 iron probably would have had 6 or even 5 stamped on it twenty years ago. And the ball doesn't spin and the cores rebound faster. And in 1999 my driver was 260cc and made out of stainless steel instead of titanium. Wait, what we were talking about? Kenny B
This is for you guys that are older.... 50+. How did/do you deal with the years creeping up on you? I have noticed a significant loss of distance with all of my clubs, so far this year. I'm 58....59 in September. I have back problems, a shoulder that is garbage and a left hip that hates me. I used to average 250 - 260 with my driver. I'm hitting it maybe 225 - 235 so far this year. I've noticed at least 10 yards shorter distances with all of my irons, too. What did/do you do to keep scoring well? I don't know what to do.... I'm in uncharted territory right now. I would love to be able to average 225-235 off the tee!! The quickest thing to do would be to have a good teaching pro evaluate your swing. Maybe a habit has formed that is robbing you of distance. Check that first. Well, here I am 9 days away from 71 (no, that's not my score). I can tell you that distance decreases with age. It just happens. My biggest drop in yardage came around 60-65, but it is probably different for different people depending on health, strength and flexibility. We can't do much about our health now. Maybe you young guys can by taking better care of yourselves while you are young! "If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself." However, we can still improve strength and flexibility as others have said. My big problem is as I get older, I also have less willpower. It's inevitable... at some point we have to move up a tee box. I'm near that point right now. I keep fighting it. I was never a big hitter, and I know that I will be losing a yard or two every year from now on. How am I compensating? Hit it straight and improve my short game. It's not bad, and if it is on, I can score pretty well (see recent posts in How'd You Play? thread). I'm also trying to improve my swing efficiency. I have issues with arthritis, and I have trouble using my wrists in my swing. I think I can get some distance back by increasing lag, but it's a struggle. I am of the opinion that we all can make improvements in our game. How we go about it will be different for each of us. I'm sure that some can just play golf and accept their limitations. I can't. I need to find ways to improve. I will always keep searching... so should you. You can do it. “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
