How many wedges are in your bag?

50: SM8, F grind (soon to be an SM9 52 bent to 51)

54: SM9, S grind (will likely go to a 56 after delivery of my P770s. 

60: SM8, D grind

At the moment, four wedges:

   The wedge from my Mizuno set MP-18 MMC at 46*;

   Mizuno T-22 wedges at 50*; 56*, and 62*

Full swing distances with them are 110, 100, 85 and 70 yards. - works out well and they are just magic for flops, chipping, pitching and the sand

Five, if we count the 41 degree set PW which would have been about an 8 iron when I started playing.

Until last month I'd carried four for many years: PW, Gap, 54* and 58*. However the stupid strong lofts on my new irons now have me carrying 5 clubs marked as wedges. My new "W" (which I guess is a PW, has the same loft as my old 9 iron. I have a new 45* club which was the loft of my old PW, a 50* which  is the loft of my old gap wedge and then my 54* and 58* . This has made my conversion to the new set a bit tricky.

PW/'10-iron' (adjusted from 47* to 45*) is a Taylormade P7MC

50* TM MG3 SB (9* bounce) w. KBS C-Taper Lite 115X shaft to match irons.

56* MG3 TW (12* bounce) - Wedge flex shaft.

60* MG2 TW (11* bounce)- wedge flex shaft. Looking to replace with a low bounce MG3 or MG4 next spring.

All my wedges are standard or higher bounce and I want the 60* low bounce to try out next. Most of my local courses have very firm bunkers and the ground really firms up for most of the golf season, so having one low bounce wedge should give me more options. That's the theory anyway.

How many wedges do you carry and how often do you replace them. I own a 60°, 58° 56° 54° 50° and (46° PW) In the bag is my 54° 50° and PW. 99% of my greenside, bunker and pitches up to 80 m (90yards) are done with my 54° and use 8 iron for bump n run shots. Are all these wedges required or could those spaces be better utilised at the top end of the bag? My 54° is 18 months old and feels like it needs replacing now. Lost a lot of its zip around green.

Personally I have a 58 54 and a 52 that is bent to a 51 and how I see it is it depends on the course you play I like having the wedges because I travel and play a lot so I never know the conditions or course I will be playing if your home course doesn't have a lot of green side bunkers then you probably don't need a 60...….. everyone bag is different you have to find what works for you and go with it I would recommend just try out taking a wedge out and putting it in the top end...… to answer your second question I like to replace mine every year but I think that comes down to how often you play

I carry set PW, set GW, SW, and LW.   Seldom use the LW so it could probably come out if the bag.   
 

nothing in your bag is required, it is all about how you use them to carry the ball specific distances.  You are limited to a max of 14 but there is no minimum.  
 

if you play a lot and/or play sandy conditions you will probably need to replace them more frequently.   Some replace every year some less frequently.

Set pw in most cases. I’ll then carry 50/54/60 in almost all cases. I may choose to have some fun and play set pw with 52/56

I have my set PW and then 52°/56°/60°. I’m pretty sure I’m going to add a 50° to the bag and debating between the Mizuno T24 wedge and a Cleveland RTX6. I can get a 30% discount on the Cleveland through VGA but I really like the Mizuno. Guess we will have to see how much Santa wants to spend on me this year.

I figure my regular Pitching Wedge, which matches my set is just a full swing club.   It's 44 degrees and has the same shaft and flex are my other irons......4 degrees more than my 9 iron, etc.   But I think it's too light to be much good for chips and pitches around the green.   I feel the same way about the matching Gap wedge.

So, the Gap Wedge that I use is an Indy that I just bought bent to 49 degrees.  It's nice and heavy, to match my two higher lofted Maltby wedge (54 and 58 degrees).   So, I'd say I have THREE true wedges in my bag.....

timely topic: i just switched irons so thought i would gap test through set and up through hybrids/utility iron and down through wedges. all had graphite stiff shafts (don’t call myself Old Joe for nothing). here’s the wedge shocker: bridgestone j33 58 degree not only more consistent than 50 Hogan and 51 Edel…BUT LONGER. Ended up with nice 10 yard gap from 45 degree from my JDM forged irons to 58. Strange but true. Sure will make my carry bag lighter and eliminate any indecision!

Currently carry 4 - 45 set wedge and 50/55/60. I just recently added the 50 and 55 Edison wedges to replace Hogan wedges. The 60 is a Hogan that doesn’t get a lot of use so it seems okay for now.  In addition to the “age” and wear of your wedges you need to also consider how much spin your ball of choice has and the condition of the greens at your home course. If you feel you need more help at the top of the bag, by all means tackle that. It’s all such a personal choice, what someone else plays is irrelevant to your setup.

The PW in the iron set Ping I 500, either 44 or 45 degrees loft. From 80 or 90 to 100 or maybe 110 yards.

A 52 / 09 Mizuno S18 forged.  From about 30 yards to 80 yards.  Rarely a full swing.

An old old original Hogan Sure-Out sand, 56 / 12 I think, big heavy flange.  Almost always out in 1 swing.  (old standard, hit 2 inches behind, and DON'T STOP)

A 60 / 07 Mizuno T5 forged. About 10 to 20 or 25 yards out.

Chipper.  The old old Don Martin Up-n-In chipper.  About 10 yards out.

 

If I were a pro and went to a 10 club bag, I would probably give up the 60 degree.  I can use the Hogan instead, depending on the lie.  What, me, a pro?  Hardly.  Dreams.

I carry a pw (46), aw (48) gw (50) and sw (54). I have a lw (58) but don't put it in the bag that often. 

I coach boy & girls high school golf. My equipment suggestions for my players is always contingent on their skill level. For example, a player who shoots high 80s - low 90s shouldn't carry a lob wedge in my opinion. He/she needs to gain confidence with a standard pw and sw at various yardages before adding a different tool (i.e. lw) to the bag.

As for how often to replace equipment, I generally default to less frequent is better.

I'm a 3 handicap and I've had my 50 and 54 wedges for over 3 years.
