I am totally blaming my association with MGS for this illness.  This started in 2018 and, there appears to be no cure. Like a moth to a flame, we had our first "Demo Day" and guess who attended?

image.png.6ca76b1103df3feda16a2984ad70f62a.png

My mission was two-fold; first was to see how the new Srixon ZX5 and ZX7 MKII compared to my current ZX5's, and second try some low spin design drivers and see if any offered lower spin for me.  The verdict from the Srixon fitter "keep what you're playing, wouldn't change anything".  As for the driver, the G430 Max with the Ping Tour 75 did offer about 7 yards in distance.

But... but... that's not what I really wanted to share.  While strolling my way down to the Callaway tent, look what I stumbled into 😍.

Nope.  The fitter did ask; "would you like to test one", to which I responded (privately) "Oh, you have no idea" 😆.

Well, these weren't the "milled" version which made that decision a little easier.  Lot's of folks were ooing and aahing the "what's inside" window showing the AI insert.  Looks like that feature is only on the Ai-One series.

Man I could have used this bad boy today.  I just couldn't get the speed down on the greens.  Had a great ball striking day too ... so many chances for birdies.  Made 2 on the back nine finally but I only missed one green on that side, but just couldn't get it down.  I would end up blowing it by 3 - 4 feet every time.  "Man, if you could putt, you would be deadly."  Yeah ... tell me about it, I've heard it before.  🤣

While waiting (I know it was just announced, but it seems like soooo long…I don’t know how the group testing the Titleist irons recently weren’t going absolutely crazy!), decided to play around with my TaylorMade Spider and Ping Anser 2i purposely mis-hitting the ball.  Hit 5 putts with each putter in the center and 0.75 inches toward the heel and toe, just looking at overall distance control.

IMG_4301.jpeg.e5a3702673fa27856feb40eac6bda7ec.jpeg

From a distance of 15 feet, here are the average distance from target based on hit location:

TaylorMade: C 13”, T 11.6”, H 11.8”

Ping: C 10.2”, T 22.2”, H 18”

No guarantee that I wasn’t compensating for the mis-hits, but it was still a little surprising to me.

This was the first time I touched the Ping in a few years…I really liked the feel of the ball coming off the face, but stopped using it as I couldn’t get anything started on line consistently.

The TaylorMade has been more consistent for starting lines, but I have struggled with speed.

Looking forward to getting the Odyssey and starting to mess around with it!

Got super excited when UPS rolled up the drive... only to be left with stupid packages for the missus...

I'm a patient person,  but this anticipation is gutting me...😆

Added some information to first page with initial thoughts.

There was a card in the box noting a “custom” build for the putter…it was a nice little touch.

Mine showed up Thursday evening and hit a few putts with it.  Spent some time Friday evening putting and couldn’t hit anything to save my life!  Switched to my TaylorMade with no improvement, so it wasn’t the putter (I am a streaky putter overall, trying to figure something out).  Couldn’t sleep Friday night (thinking about putting) and decided to tweak my setup a bit…this had tremendous results.  The Odyssey is rolling very smooth off the face and definitely outperforms my TaylorMade.

Was finally going to make it to the practice green at my local course today, but Mother Nature had other ideas!

You can say it…I’m soft!  Reality is I didn’t want to get my new toy wet.

In the meantime, I am stuck putting indoors, but am liking the feel and results so far.

Spent quite a bit looking through the window once I unboxed it.  The window is nice and overall, the entire bottom of the club is clean (liking the color scheme).  Rolling putts, the view from the top is very nice also…the club frames the ball nicely and feel like it naturally lines up.

Played around tonight purposely hitting the Ai-ONE off center, similar to what I noted previously.

IMG_4326.jpeg.24a9dc838fcf7a05e40e0d8738baf1f2.jpeg

From a distance of 15 feet, made 5 strokes each in the center and 0.75 inches towards the heel and toe.

IMG_4325.jpeg.f364eedfeee6cd2f58d793fb8d931234.jpeg

Here is the comparison of data from the different putters:

TaylorMade Spider Tour: C 13”, T 11.6”, H 11.8” (overall average 12.5”)

Ping Anser 2i: C 10.2”, T 22.2”, H 18” (overall average 15.4”)

Odyssey Ai-ONE 7s: C 5.2”, T 4.6”, H 4.8” (overall average 4.8”)

It will come as a surprise to most of you, but I am not a robot, so there is no guarantee that I wasn’t compensating some for the mis-hits…but there was not a single putt with the Ai-ONE that I felt was going to be way off distance.  Each ball came off the face nice and was rolling clean.

I was a little skeptical coming into the test that the AI technology would have an impact, but at this point I’m believing.

I've been thinking of ways to test out the off center forgiveness factor and I'm more convinced now that it's going to have be more about measuring average distance to hole and compare those numbers head to head. Without a putting robot there is no way to account for other variables like different swing speed.

I'm going to play a round /play around with it tomorrow. I can't lie, with that sleek white grip, I feel like I need to wear 2 gloves while putting...lol

But seriously,  is it wrong to want to put a hiking sock around the grip while it's in the bag? I'm afraid to scratch it!

I know it’s not the final answer, but for me it is an indicator of the technology.  Looked at controlling what variables I could just for comparison at this point.

Getting comfortable with it that if I hit a 15 foot putt, the ball is going to go somewhere around 15 feet.

I agree, the grip is definitely slicker than what I’m used to.  I’m hoping it “wears in” a little and gets a little more tack to it (for reference, I’m a no glove for putting).

Today I got to play around AND play A Round with the DB putter.

First Impressions: this putter is the perfect fit for me. I opted for the stock steel shaft (Stroke Lab 90), and the stock grip (AI-One pistol) that was offered. The only thing I changed after doing some research was to add 1⁰ of lie angle. I am shorter, and tend to lean the putter more (noticed this with my mallet putter), I also went with a shaft length of 32".

I do not know what size weights are stock in it, and will try to find out. Possibly even order some additional ones later on to swap out and experiment with.

Screenshot_20231212_183236_Chrome.jpg.2f1554d8f3e7ceb7ba813aa75985eb9f.jpgScreenshot_20231212_183226_Chrome.jpg.2ef7f1fd1ccda6da515ea105984a9b7d.jpgScreenshot_20231212_183159_Chrome.jpg.cbfced53ee1a735b27fe5d761b40d1aa.jpgScreenshot_20231212_183151_Chrome.jpg.b98cda3839d8db2c06f80eaa70a9ca68.jpg

I spent about 30 minutes practicing today before going out on the course. It was a mere 36⁰ out. I was dressed like a 7 layer burrito.

This was my first time hitting a ball with the DB1 as well. (My indoor rollout practice mats are still flattening out)

Adjusting to the weight, and balance point, (after coming from the Ray Cook Mallet) was almost seamless. After about 6 test putts, I could already feel the difference in the face contact and the swing pressure required. The more challenging part was adjusting my stance and lean angle over the putter.

I setup at different distances and lies. I used 3 different balls to see how they would EACH roll from trying to apply the same swing speeds (pressure) and contact area.

Now, im not the worst putter, (until you watch the upcoming videos and cringe..lol) but I still have a bit to learn, and with more practice, and getting simpatico with this putter, I hope to vastly improve my rolling game.

Afterwards,  it warmed up to about 50⁰ and a buddy and I were able to play today on the "Short Course" at the RTJ Highlands GC. I only 3 putted TWICE for the entire round! (That's significant to me)

one was a misread on a 12' double breaker downhill lie. It took the ball 10 feet past the hole. I shorted the cup by 8 inches coming back up. The other was on an uphill putt over 20' from the pin. I didn't quite catch enough of the crest of the hill, and it rolled back to me. Gave it some extra and blew past the hole by 2 feet.
