Scotty Cameron - Putter Selection Guide

Sigh...

Good to know that all of my face-balanced putters are defective. All putters need toe hang is a load of bs.

I read this yesterday. I have a rare face balanced Scotty, but honestly do not like most Scotty Putters. I fail to see why you should pay $300 for a $100 copy of a Ping Anser.

Since I am ragging on Scotty, the one I have is the poorest designed long putter I have ever seen. It has a two piece shaft with an aluminum coupling in the middle that is pinned together. So your hands are on one side of this, and the weight of the putter head is on the other side off this, ensuring that the weakest part of the shaft is in the area with the most stress. This has been returned to the putter shop on two occassions and it came back as good as new. The only problem is it will last for about a year and then needs to be repaired again.

I have a new grip that should be here today or tomorrow, and I am fixing this myself. The aluminum coupling is now in the trash and I have built a steel one to glue in. I am also wanting to replace the shaft so that it is not spliced in the center, but it requires a shaft that measure 0.420 OD. I am not sure if this is a .382 flared tip or not. The guy at the PGA Superstore did not think it was.

It is a Big Sur from around 1998 or so that has been polished and copper plated. Simular to a Ping Bannana but not as big and center shafted. It is awesome looking and I have played with it since I sent the post where I complained about it. I think the shaft is fixed, I took another shaft and stuck down inside it and epoxied the heck out of it. This is all covered up by the grip and looks great but it was irritating to have such a stupid design on a high dollar putter.

So where is it failing? At the hosel or at the extension?

The middle of the shaft where the two pieces of shafts were joined together there was an aluminum coupling that was held together with a pin. Since this was below where most people would have there hands, and way above the head. Originally, this was a 48 inch shaft. It was really two 24 inch shafts joined together. But this coupling was right in the middle of the shaft. So everytime you swung the putter, the full stress was on this coupling.

What I did, was totally remove this coupling, and then cut another shaft and sanded part of it and with epoxy and glass bead on it, I drove it as far down into rhe bottom shaft as I could, and then cut it to the length I wanted. Since I prefered this shorter, 43", instead of 48", this put the splice directly under my lower hand and supports the splice. This is a really stupid design.

Yeah those tend to break. Putting the slip fit spliced shafts or a single broomstick shaft should fix that because it takes any play out of it.

But what about the big tip. is this the .382 id flared tip or what is it? I have never found anyone who makes claims to make a shaft that is .42 OD. That is why I did not attempt to replace the complete shaft because i was unable to find the bottom section.

Use a .370 ski pole shaft and one of these shims. You may have to trim the ear length on the shims, but they'll work fine. I've done it many times.

Scotty used a .420 that wasn't available to the public so one would have to send it back. That was intentional. There's always a work around.
