Was just coming here to say this. I have hit a Volvik exactly once. I personally do not like the tacky feel of the matte ball at all.

I have played in some scramble tourneys where there is a long drive guy on a hole and that's primarily where I have seen them.

Bubba Watson I believe played their S4 ball. I don't think he used it for long though.

As for Matte colored balls, I want to say it was the no putts given podcast I watched that has made me never play a matte colored ball after watching it. It was a few years ago, and I don't quite remember why fully they said they weren't good to use. but ever since then I stopped using them.

I found a volvik ball once. Knew nothing about them. Put it in the practice bucket.  Good article on how they've decided to upgrade their offerings.

I'm sure there are a ton of companies doing this now too that were falling to the wayside from the top 5 companies

These Callaway balls are the same way as you described.  Very rubbery feel. Great out if the sand and short high shots,  but horrible distance for me on longer shots.

Good article Jamie and to learn about the Volvik name.
Like @Wheelieb I will not use matted golf balls after listening to the No Putts Given episode on golf balls.

I've played Volvik exactly one time & for one hole only.  A friend gave me a Black Matte Volvik golf ball below:

IMG_1003.jpg.403c0d8f109d5e834b4ae0904b6706f3.jpg

It was the oddest golf ball to hit.  It looked weird on the tee and it was odd looking at the ball flying in the air.  I did keep the ball & have it in my office.  But will not play it.

Had a friend who played the red ones for a bit.  Of course we made fun and called them pink.  Couldn't see those things in the air for anything.

I got some Srixon Qstar Tour Divide yellow/orange with clubhouse credit from winning golf league.  Very easy to see them in the air and in the rough and woods.  Also great for putting alignment, but as others have stated I hated the feel and did not like the distance I got with them.

TL;DR - matte balls are terrible at spin consistency across conditions. As soon as they're wet in particular their spin profiles are completely different, notably significantly lower-spin. If you are playing in completely dry conditions, you really shouldn't see much difference, but if there is any moisture (morning dew, for example), you're likely to get a flyer from the middle of the fairway.

Most of their balls have a matte finish, which doesn't fly in Pennsylvania. Too wet most of the year either from morning dew or rain. IIRC, their tour level ball available in white S4 had almost as much spin as a K Sig. I have to suspect that's why Bubba dropped them so quickly.
