What Are You Tracking With?

Recommended Posts

My buddy started using arcos so I bought a used set of Facebook and some how got a free first year and have stuck with it ever since.  This will be year 4 I think.  I just buy myself an annual membership during their black Friday sale every year to save.

I think the putting needs work, but I've liked it enough to not had a need to try another service. Really like to use it to help get realistic distances when I need help picking a club

I used 18Birdies for a year and liked it, but wanted better (less manual) shot tracking and stats. Last year, I used a Garmin S60 last year and really liked it. But I wanted automatic club tracking a better full-hole interface. So this year, I'm using a Shotscope X5. Only used it twice so far and getting used to it, but so far, so good. I would constantly forget to select my club on the Garmin. Shotscope misses some shots (on purpose because it assume two nearby shots were one shot so as not to count practice swings), and I am using auto putting which many are critical of but I don't have an opinion of yet.

Ultimately, I wanted something that does everything but quietly. I don't want to look at my phone or have a ton of interactions during the round. I just want to look at it when I need it but otherwise stay focused on the game. The watch does this for me.

I’m using Golf Shot. Here’s some data:

there’s even more data when you drill down. I get distance information and more swing data than I’m showing. It takes time for the app to adjust to my game but it’s getting closer every round. For $100 it’s better than some of the other apps I’ve used before.

I've been tracking my game for years with a GolfLogix app on my Android phone.  It works reasonably well showing a map of each hole, distances to various features on the hole, and suggesting clubs for each shot based on my stored history.  Once a free app it now costs upwards of $50 a year to use but that does come with a database that covers every course in North America.

The downside besides the cost is that in a five-hour round, it can fairly well run down the battery in a barely two-year-old phone.  I hate that I find myself on the back 9 having to plug my phone into the cart just to make sure I have enough battery to get back to the car.

Is anyone else using an app that has become their go-to that doesn't have all of the downsides of GolfLogix?

I had a Garmin Approach watch for the last few years. While working well, the associated app and advanced data analysis tools were basic at best.

I switched to a Shot Scope X5 watch with club sensors last season and couldn’t be happier. I highly suggest their products and they are frequently on sale. The app and data interfaces are absolutely on point. If you are obsessed with data, a handful or corrections (mainly regarding putts) are required after the round and that’s it. The experience is basically seamless.

Arccos user here. Really like the data and ease of use. I already had an Apple Watch and phone, so integration was seemless enough and I don't plan on buying the Caddie device. I'll eventually upgrade my watch to the Ultra for extra screen size and battery life.

Same as @sman3115, I buy annual membership in the black friday sales to bring the cost closer to the premium 18Birdies cost that friends use.

This is the Arccos user group thread for anyone interested:

I had been using 18 birdies for the last 1-1.5 years. It was pretty basic and mostly just tracked fairways hit, GIR, putts per hole, and score.

This is what I've been keeping track of using the Bushnell app that connects to the Bushnell Wingman GPS speaker.  I got the Wingman in a swag bag at a tournament last year, you just have to download a free app, and at the beginning of the round download the course you're playing.

It's not as comprehensive as some of the other stuff y'all are talking about, but it does give you the layout of the hole with distances to hazards and distances to the center, front, and back of the green which has helped me out a lot by giving me a range to hit instead of a single number. But for $79 all-in (no annual fees) it's a pretty good deal.

I use a semiautomated tracking called score keeper used by greens keeper.org. I have to load my score card each time but it tracks FH, GIR, penalties, putts, raw score and then computes a rough handicap score etc. It tracks my game with enough data to keep me busy and going in the right direction to do corrections and practice needs.

Previously an avid 18 Birdies for tracking and course management. Recently got the Garmin S70 and havent looked back. great battery, incredibly lightweight, comfortable (although i did replace my band to a nylon band as i tend to have reactions with the silicone bands). Ive found the S70 to be great for course management with all the yardages available, and distance to hazards and the like. I dont pay for the green topography subscription as I prefer to get my own feel of the greens. Ive found that it doesnt slow down play at all. After the shot, its a quick 1-2 clicks to select the club, then when I get to my ball, a quick look for yardage and hazards. Much faster than pulling out the phone to check 18 Birdies, or pull out the rangefinder and tag the flag.

Currently trying out both 18 Birdies and Golfshot.  Like that both can interface with an Apple watch.  One thing I'd like to see is yardages to cover a hazard or dogleg and add shot tracking.  So either considering upgrading to the paid additional features or upgrading to the new Shot Scope V5.

So Taylormade+ updated and now doesn't provide shot tracking anymore. For the first time in 3 years, I don't shot track during rounds. And, I must say, it is a bit liberating. The shot tracking itself is not that intensive after you get really used to it but just not being on my phone at all is great. Having a pencil and keeping a few stats on my scorecard has been really fun lately. So I am sticking with that for now.

I'm in the same boat this year. After 3 years of tracking on Arccos and always worrying if I'm going to mess up my smart distances with each shot, so I would never do partial shots with my irons. Or if it's not in the peak of summer climate and my driver average comes out 20 yards short. My first time out this year, I played amazing by my standards. Like you said, it was so liberating. But then my second time out, I was so frustrated because I was playing so poorly. Even though I tracked with my watch, I relied on my phone a lot for overhead views. Debating on using a gps app again for the overhead views, even though I've played the same course a million times, It's nice to see where the fat parts of the fairways are.

One spot that really is useful is the live distance tracking.

So say you, or your playing partner, hits an errant shot, and you're searching for it. "what did you hit"?  7i..  "well why are we looking 200 yards from where you hit it, lets back up."

This is by far the greatest feature of live tracking! As long as you aren't deep in the weeds, you can almost always figure out the general area that your ball is in, based on the last shot detected distance.

Tracked things for several years and quit doing it late last year. Decided that all it really let me know was that if I hit fairways and greens and putted decent scored pretty good, if not scored pretty bad. Don’t really need numbers to know when the shot is bad. Been playing long enough to know my weaknesses.
