Fit My Irons

Intriguing

Recommended Posts

Morning!

I bought my irons a handful of years ago online and built them with what I believe would work best for me. Would it be worth going to get them fit to me? Or wait until I get a new set of irons. I just got a new driver and hybrid and love them. Asking for suggestions.

Thanks!

What is working or not working for your current set of irons? What is the main reason for wanting to switch?

When I first picked up golf after about 10 years I wanted a more forgiving set. I ended up getting the PXG 211s. I don’t have very consistent distances. I feel as if from one swing to the other they could be 10 or so yards different. I know a lot of that depends on the type of contact I make, but I feel like it shouldn’t be that different.

Just my own take, but I don't think that is an issue with the irons especially if your consistency is varied.

The 0211 are a very solid set of irons and while some talk about hot spots and that it can just the be lie and more that change. Brief example now that it is hot and humid I am about 8 yards longer than I will be in late Sept.

If you can get some data, see what your numbers are like with your current set. Maybe just lie angle needs to be tweaked or something to help improve consistent strikes. Or take them to the range, get some footspray and chart your distances as best you can from the strikes. The footspray will show you exactly where you are hitting and should help lead to some further insights before deciding on whether or not to do new shafts, new clubs or whatever it may be.

Thank you!! I might just try that.

You list your handicap as a 10 and based on the article linked below the average dispersion depth is 20-25 yards

How big of a dispersion pattern do you think you should have both width and depth?

Welcome to the forum!

If you have never had an iron fitting, I would suggest doing so before investing in new clubs.  As has been pointed out, some of your current issue could be swing related.  The benefit of the fitting (from a competent facility) is that for a relatively low cost, you will get information on the "archer vs. arrow" question, just how well the 0211's fit you, and what if any other make/models show better results.

Good luck and keep us posted on your decision/progress.

My son has the 0211 irons and they seemingly have "hot" spots and are stronger lofted. He has gone back to an older set of Hogans where he can determine correct distances without that "what the heck" just happed shot.

Now as for fittings and this is based upon the input from the local fitter that has been in the game for over 50 years. He stipulated that each individual iron should be addressed, as lie characteristics most likely would change slightly from club to club. Your 7 iron may be 2 degrees flat and your 4 iron may be 1 degree up as an example. Done correctly, a fitting would take the better part of a day and would also include correct grip size, shaft length, shaft weight (steel or graphite). It's not going to be like the PING color code set up, but I would venture to say that the staff pros playing PING would go through the same fittings as described.  Hope this helps.....
