I started a couple of months ago because i found my sand wedge was too inconsistent on less than full sw shots. Ive been hugely surprised and happy. Lob wedge is very accurate from 50-80 yards now.

I also had removed all my hybrids and 3w so has some space. Im 4-lob now with 7w, 5w, and driver. Its worked out really well and the first time in many years ive carried 4 and 5 irons in lieu of hybrids.

I’m thinking inconsistency is my bigger issue. More wedge practice is the fix if I’m being honest with myself. (But who does that? 😂)

I’m overall not surprised it’s down (not sure if all sports are down are not) I’m just glad to have a little escape! Let’s go Pats!

I’m interested in seeing how Cam performs. Can his mobility overcome the lack of offensive weapons?

  3. How often in a round do folks use a lob wedge? I’ve been carrying a lob wedge for a years now. And honestly don’t find myself using it all that often. When I do carry it, I remove my driving iron. When I do that I more often miss the driving iron on the tight holes. Anyone else have a similar experience?

You get that shipping notification, then it'll be time to start starting out the window. I'm bad about it, too. I'll check FedEx or ups constantly.

I'm just catching up on this thread. But I can relate. I have a UPS account that allows me to follow the truck that has my package. It brings up a GPS screen that shows the trucks progress. Which can be frustrating. I often found myself saying, "What are you doing over there!?!?! You were just to streets over!" LOL

  5. Not that I need any new equipment but... I am always eyeing putters. There is nothing wrong with my Evnroll ER7 but the new Scotty's look nice and as we learned in the MGS Best Blade Putter Test the new Scotty Cameron Select Squareback 2 tested well. And I love the looks of the the Bettinardi putters. I could easily get addicted to putters.

  6. This might be a dumb question but with modern graphite shafts like the Motore X is "puring" even necessary and is it worth it for an average golfer? I have not read in this review thread if that was done for any of the testers. I saw an article several years ago singing its praises and see that its always an option when buying a shaft from online retailers like the Golfworks. Reading through this thread I noticed a number of club tinkerers who seem to try a lot of shafts which seems like it would be fun but could get a bit pricey.

Surprised to not see a thread for the amazing Mac bags so had to share mine. I’ve gone through a lot of equipment over the last 5 years but this bag has been a constant.

I had it custom made with a water bottle pocket, utility loop (I added a second strap) and in all black ballistic nylon. Still looks brand new.

If anyone has ever been curious to order one I think it’s well worth it.

I appreciate the simple beauty of a Mackenzie bag. What is the make make up of the clubs you carry?

I have a jig for ferrule installs, 120 grit for shaft prep and a vise with a shaft grip so I can do grips. Beyond that it’s not super high-tech, I’d say more along the lines of utilitarian than anything you’d see in a shop. Essentially I found what works for me and I know my limits.

Above all, it’s become a hobby. I stopped playing bagpipes a few years ago and needed another hobby just to help keep my mind fresh and occupied.

    Those tools sound really manageable.

Bagpipes?! You don't hear that everyday! My high school was the fighting Irish. We would have the occasional bagpiper. Can you pipe in the haggis? 🙂

Thanks man...I am not a professional by any means.  I learned most of the craft from my grandpa who built me my first set and was a believer in Golfworks / Dynacraft / Golfsmith Products. He was an engineer by trade...He held several patents on the world's first Haloid 914 (Xerox) copier and took pride in showing me how to properly build a club.

As far as the specificity of weights and tolerances I will say that I was able to get my swing weights between D2/D3 for the entire set.  I did not overanalyze the set and prefer feel over data.  I think that makes sense without explaining further.  If it feels good, it works good!

BBF&Co had my eye for a while and I wanted to put my own touch on the set.  They were easy to install on a .355 Taper Shaft and turned out well.  As far as the shafts, that sell was based upon a LOT of quality feedback from MGS members.  As I said before, I was always swinging boardy and stiff shafts.  Amid a COVID tempered golf season, I have been able to put in enough swings to realize that the feel of these shafts gave me a TON of confidence to make better swings.  The flight was consistent and they just perform.

Technically speaking, I am not a believer in spining shafts.  It's just my opinion but I really do not see value in that unless you're consistently breaking par and putting the ball exactly where you want it every time you swing the club.  If anyone wants to discuss further, we can do that another time.  The average golfer could paralyze their brain by over thinking this process.

So as far as building the set I will say this.  TAKE YOUR TIME.  That was the greatest lesson in learning club building.  Don't be afraid to make a mistake, you will.  I hope that helps, if you need any more please let me know, I would be glad to help!

Thanks for the detailed reply. I love that you learned club building from your grandpa. That sounds like a wonderful memory to have.

Other than the basic tools, do you have any club building tools?

In my younger years I repaired medical equipment in the Army and worked on some xerography equipment for X-Ray. I may have dip my toe in the water of "club building". I'm thinking of ordering some components from Golfworks for a new driver shaft and I have seen some reasonable shaft prices on eBay. That is the cool thing about adjustable drivers.

I’ve written on several posts that I’ve been interested in building a new set of irons this season. As it’s progressed, I pulled the trigger last week and went with a 4-GW setup with Nippon Modus 3 120 shafts in a stiff flex. The trial period was with the 7 iron and it’s been consistently positive. I’ve tried hitting a variety of shots in several different conditions. Wind, no wind, rain, cold and sun. The trial period was very successful and as a result, these are my new irons.

I am well aware that Maltby irons are not wetting the whistle of every golfer. I’ll be blunt and say, you’re not my audience.

This was a very fun project and the heads are complemented by ferrules from BB&F Co.  The ferrules arrived in a drawstring pouch which was cool. Above all, quality of the product is fantastic. At approximately $3-$4/each, it doesn’t break the bank to add a nice touch.

Here are some photos of the set and as the season progresses, I’ll be able to add to this thread. If you’re interested in a players distance club that you can build yourself, I am here to answer whatever questions you have.

Those look great. I am a big fan of  BB&F Co ferrules. I just don't as of yet have the skills to do this kind of work. How long did the build take? I have been watching a club builder on YouTube, Jim Mcleery of McGolf Custom clubs. He does a great job of showing the process. I am curious as to what level of detail went into your build. He weighs the components and does frequency checks for flex, spine and flow. That's what he does for a living but I wonder of that level of detail is needed for the average golfer. Thanks for sharing this build.

  11. I have 3 main brands in my bag. PXG, Ping, and Callaway. I have mostly been a Ping player. I made the switch to PXG while looking for irons that were a bit longer than my G25 irons. I switched to PXG due to the veterans discount they offered on the irons and 3 wood. I am completely happy with the change. I have a Ping G400 Max driver and a G30 hybrid. I am very happy with those clubs and don't have any reason to change either at this point. The PXG 0341 3 wood replaced a TaylorMade M1 3wood which I struggled to hit. I have Callaway MD3 wedges which I am very happy with and don't foresee changing these anytime soon.

  12. I follow quote a few YouTubers including the usual suspects, Crossfield, Finch and Shiels. A channel I just found along this similar style is James Robinson

For some humor and love of the game I enjoy Fried Eggs Golf and the golf adventures of a son and dad on a backyard 9 hole par 3 course, Golfmates (GolfVlogsUK) is channel that is all about the golf community. Alex Etches out of Australia is fun, he made club with a hose as a shaft (LOL) He also did a fun VLOG with Alice Cooper. They don't take themselves too seriously.

The Average Golfer has recently done some videos with wonderful production values. His drone footage on some the UK links are stunning. Golfholics is another channel with really high production values and really good drone footage. SAS Golf has done some good videos on e-bay finds which are fun to watch. Along the same vein Stacked Golf is good. This husband and wife team from Florida hit Flea Markets and Thrift Shops in search of deals on clubs then try them out on the course.

For club building Jim McCleery has a good channel McGolf Custom Clubs. Jim reshafted my 18* driving iron.

Hmm I do watch of a lot of YouTube golf. Oh and the I have been enjoying the final rounds of the Masters as well as a lot of Shell's Wonderful World of Golf.

After playing the same irons (JPX 800 Pro) since 2011/12, I have finally decided to upgrade my irons.  Courses here are open, but the ranges are closed.  As a result, my new sticks will get a baptism by fire on the course Saturday.  I have PXG 0211 irons (4-GW) coming in addition to a Gen 1 Mustang Black Dot putter.  Feel free to hit me up with any questions related to these irons or the putter.  Since most PXG fitting locations are closed, they agreed to check my specs once we return to normal; whenever that is.  I'll be as honest and frank as possible.  As a veteran, I believe in supporting companies that support veterans.  The PXG Heroes deal, which just so happens to be open to everyone now, is a great way to expand the brand.  I just really hope I like these.

I took advantage of the For Heroes program as well. I know have 0211 irons 5-GW and an 0341 3 Wood. Because of weather and virus I have only had them on the course once but initial results are promising. At the range I've been impressed with the results. I have never played better feeling irons and I hit the 0341 much better than the TM M1 3 wood I had previously.

  14. I'm liking the Mevo. It is definitely on my wish list. I have a Rukket Haak pop up net with the tri-turf mat and a Rukket pop-up pitch and chip target. They are currently in my basement but I can't hit full shots due to the low ceiling. When the weather warms up in Central NY, its all getting moved outside.
