Great comments WHT.  Wow, close to 400 rounds logged in Golfshot.  I am REALLY interested to hear your thoughts on the app and functionality evolution since you used it last (5 or 6 years ago??).  I'm more and more talking myself into an Apple Watch... I wonder if Apple offers a discount code for Golfshot users ??  (haha... yeah... wishful thinking 😉 ).

Yeah, I’m often an early adopter.  Sometimes that works, sometimes I’m the test failure.  I reloaded and updated the GolfShot app, and added the Apple Watch component. And yes, you want an Apple Watch…. I didn’t think I did - not an early adopter there.  Thought my Fitbit was all I needed (early adopter) but once I tried it I’ll never go without. Tracking my health activities and sleep has been very good for me, not to mention some of the calendar and text options while working. But I sleep w it on so when I wake up I’m already at 80% or so of battery charge left. Will have to see how that works out for me.  Hopefully first round trial next Thursday or Friday. Been killing me that I’ve got such a late start this spring but gotta work to pay for those tee times …

  2. GolfShot - thats an app I haven't thought about for a while... I have 381 rounds recorded in my GolfShot app between 2012 and 2017 - when I made the switch to Arcoss. Since then I got an AppleWatch, so I could give that a try, but it's a series 4 circa 2018 - so worry about the battery drain and if it is powerful enough.  I see they recommend a Series 6 for the SwingID but I'm not really interested in that. May have to give it a try this spring when I get back on the course (two weeks hopefully).  See what the battery drain is like for myself.

I'm sure wearing the watch it can tell if I'm making a swing - just curious how well it does in predicting what club I use if my gaps are too close together (whole other problem...)  How it does on putting.

My real question - and i'll just have to try and find out - can you run GolfShot and Across at the same time.  No reason to do that permanently - just while testing to see if I want to switch back.  I've got 502 rounds in the Arcoss database...

During those 5 years of using GolfShot I really enjoyed it.  I thought the stats were helpful, and they even suggested instructional videos within the app for what were weak areas of my game.  Had a very decent course library.  My only reason for switch was that I was intrigued with the idea of the sensors automatically recording the shot.  Again, I had no smart watch back in that day.  I just entered shots as I walked along.

I notice that GolfShot doesn't use strokes gained; while Across does.  I've gotten used to measuring myself with that method.  I wonder why they don't as that is now become part of the diehard golfer's vocabulary...

Worth giving it a try again.

  3. I use a Mevo+, and an iRange stick to hold my iPhone hitting into a Sporina net.  I add that part about the iRange stick because if you want to improve your swing you need some good video as well as some good numbers.  I work w a Skillest coach, and while we don't go deep on some of the numbers  I am always exporting from the FSGolf app tied to the Mevo+ a spreadsheet w my numbers so she can see my averages and trends, as well as exporting video w/numbers, and some shots.  I can slave the Mevo+ to the Stack app as well, so that has been part of my winter prep.   I went back and forth over what was the right device for me - yes the Mevo+ is pricey, but more flexible.  I use mine hitting into a net in my backyard, at the driving range, and I've used it indoors too.  I have not used it as a simulator, but specifically to practice - so I need to see curve and side spin, and show that to my coach.

  4. For you podcast listening Stackers... the Sweet Spot pod had Dr. Greg Rose from the TitlePerformance Institute on this week. While much of the pod is how to protect yourself from injury he also delves deep into the science of speed, strength and the difference between the two.  He discussed how you might test your capabilities to know if you are maxed out without increasing strength, and if you are currently getting more speed than what you safely should be doing without injuring yourself.  The science and equations went beyond me but its worth a listen.  The Spotify link is below, but you can find it elsewhere - just look for the 4/17/23 episode

  5. Or an episode dedicated to the KornFerryTour. Show us the guys not flying in jets. Don’t have millions in the bank.  Nothing against the guys that do… but it’s that true human drama that makes the compelling story for the viewer. Show us the guys who are just trying to make it sprinkled in with the major winners and household names.

  6. First time this season out on the range and on the grass - been on the mats for a couple weeks. As always, a transition. But irons came back very quickly.  Very happy that what I’ve been working on inside all winter is translating to hitting a real ball on real grass.

The driver is, as they say, another story. I have three things I’m working on - maintaining my tilt, tucking my trail elbow, and pulling thru w my lead hip. I get one out of three - pulling w my hip.  What I feel and what I do are two different things when it comes to a rehearsal swing and a real swing. The elbow flys, the shoulders flatten, ball sails to the right… frustrating day.

But to always take away a positive - the Stack work is paying off. - I’m averaging 4mph faster w driver than last year without effort.

I'll be curious what he says. From late May to early July I try to play five or six days a week and am curious if the speed priming is supposed to be used daily. I like taking the swings as it really helps to loosen me up.

Ditto -since you are supposed to have "rest" days, and I try to play four days in a row once the season starts I'm not sure how to even do a Stack program during the season.  Or do you take twenty minutes after your round every other day to do a session?

But I hear you on time being a critical component.

  8. Yoga yoga yoga. Builds strength and flexibility. Any and all of it will help. Classes are usually pretty cheap - and I recommend in person classes to start because the instructor may give little cues that a 2% change in position makes a 20% difference in effort or expansion.  Which class to choose?  One for beginners is great but if you don’t see one listed don’t let it dissuade you. I do an Astanga class every week. Great for strength, balance, hip opening, and rotation.  A typical yin class is also great for hip opening and rotation - and is very very low key and zen.   You won’t find a yoga instructor who isn’t welcoming to a new practitioner.

  9. I saw probably a dozen Rhoback Azalea shirts last weekend in Augusta.  Looked good.  For Christmas my eldest daughter got me a BadBirdie shirt.  I've been a PM guy for a long time now, but I have to say, that BB shirt was really nice.  And similar to the RhoBack line, they have some, shall we say, flair.

Someone looking for a lite weight hoodie - I've got a PM hoodie that I love and its really lite, and great to layer with.  But I just picked up a Turtleson hoodie.  Super soft.  Just keeps the cool air or wind off my arms.  I've got a Turtleson golf shirt in the closet I don't really wear - I got the wrong size - but this hoodie could become a favorite.

Whom ever is making it - todays performance, light weight, technical stretch fabrics - its a good time to be a golfer.  Sure beats those sweaty pique polos with roll collars of yesteryear.

    The Bad Birdie is below

  10. If memory serves - its hard intentionally because they want to discourage people selling on the secondary market, and they take security very seriously - at least that was the case when it was last in Europe .  For example - the volunteer badges in Paris had the volunteer's photo printed on it; not the case in either Hazeltine or Whistling.

  11. Just completed the Progress Check upon completion of my first Foundation series.  At the end it shows a small 3 mph gain in actual driver speed.  I'm not complaining about that.  Again, my goal was to get back to my pre-hip replacement speed.  And I saw small similar gains across all weights.

IMG_1986.PNG.f1451fa44a3d0daa91c294a5eaff5211.PNG I struggle w the difference between a "full intent" and "max intent".  I certainly know what swinging w "max intent" feels like, the the Foundation program has had me doing that for the last several weeks. But for the Progress check when I'm told to dial it back to "full intent".  Yes, yes, yes, I've seen Sasha's video.  But it's still very very subjective, and after swinging at Max, I feel like I'm slowing it down.  My Max intent swings on the 135 gram weight have been 7 or 8 mph faster than the full intent.  I don't know if 135g is the base or or test weight for everyone else, but that is what mine is. I use the Jr size club as I've got a lower ceiling to worry about.

Upon completion I was given choices for the next series and the AI recommended Neural Drive.  I wish I knew what about my Foundation and/or the questions I was asked triggered that recommendation.  I think it was because of the question about how does the driver feel light or heavy; or was it do I feel that i'm not getting as much speed out of my swing for my strength.  Yes to both.  I actually believe I have some barriers/flaws in my swing that cost my speed - so I said yes I don't have the speed for my strength.  I think my "flying elbow" inhibits my speed and I say that because when I do get it appropriated tucked I suddenly see my speeds jump a good 5 or 8 mph.  But the next swing is back down - so thats a swing flaw inhibiting it.

Anyway, Neural Drive is next.  Whether or not that is the best choice I'm not sure but I figure it can't hurt...  (right???)

  12. One other thing to remember if you spend the money on a good rain suit - you need to pay attention to the laundering and drying instructions... they can be very different.  GoreTex likes the heat - throw it in the dryer.  ProQuip does not - hang it.  Looks for special detergents or chemical free detergents - contact the company that you buy it from.  The last thing you want to do is launder it wrong and destroy the water proofing...  I have one bottle of detergent for each - and because they only get washed once or twice a season I'm still on my first bottle.

  13. I second looking at ProQuip.  It’s not GoreTex but works great and is breathable.

I have two rain suits. Bought a GoreTex suit by SunIce when at StAndrews years ago. Love it. Stay dry from the outside. But not terribly breathable and I start getting wet from the inside when it’s hot and or humid.

Bought a ProQuip rain suit when at the RyderCup in France - also stay dry; very breathable. But I think the pants rise is a little high.

my ultimate rain suite and what I wore all day Saturday in Augusta this past week - the ProQuip top, and SunIce GoreTex bottom. Stayed dry and comfortable.  Had multiple layers on underneath for warmth but did not get “stuffy”.

I like the SunIce bottoms as they unzip higher, but can also snap closer for a more tapered fit. More room in the crotch area. I think ProQuip is fine if not having to pull over and wear over another pair of pants - but I often do.

  14. Rain, rain, go away, come again some other day…

I’ve packed two rain suits, an umbrella, and a poncho to cover my chair… and three layers to wear under the rain gear...

In 2019 they moved the Sunday tee times way up and played from split tees because they were anticipating bad weather in the afternoon.  I wonder if we could see 36 on Sunday.  Be a lot of upset folks if they have to finish on Monday.  But if no lightening, I wonder how hard it would have to rain to pull the plug on Saturday.  It’ll be miserable with the cool/cold temperatures - but everyone would have to deal with it.  Tomorrow those folks going off early should have an advantage compared to the later tee times.  But on Saturday misery would have plenty of company.

Check out the Wilson Women's Profile SGI 14-piece set at Dicks. It's currently on sale from $429.99 down to $399.99. Full set with a lot of fit options. Its a good starter set and will last a while in case she gets hooked. Lots of other sets have less clubs.

    Thanks. Will do that.

  16. After years of trying to get my daughter interested in golf and failing to do so... now that she lives eight hours away and has girl friends (and may be there is a boy too... I dunno) who like to go to Top Golf or someplace like that and hit balls, she has finally taken an interest.  Got a text message today "Dad, have you ever heard of Top Flite and what do you think of these clubs?" accompanying a picture of pink clubs...

After the shiver ran thru me, I said "First, let dad pay for some lessons with a real pro..." then "Second, let me do some research."

You all are my research...  26 year old woman, approx 5 ft 2 in height, weighs nothing.   Who knows if she'll stick with it - so not wanting to break the bank.  I know she just needs something to get started with - but I wonder about length, flex, etc...  want to make sure she doesn't have just crap that she can't get off the ground either.   I made a quick trip to GolfGalaxy and see several "all in one" sets for women from TopFlite at $300 up to $1,200 for the Cobras or TaylorMades.  Some like TopFlite offer a petite set based on height - which makes sense for her, most make no mention of size.  I know TourEdge made a "half set" of their Lady's Edge line.

Anyone else gone through this? Recommendations for a dad trying to help from afar?

I actually found these online and have had to do everything possible to resist!

Yeah, but I'm a try before you buy it kinda guy...  Ive found a few on-line as well, but limited in shaft options, and I'd really like to get fit for them if I'm going to spend that much dough.   And as I haven't even hit the shinny T200s I have no idea how I'll like them.  And that may be what I just have to go do first - get fit into a set of chrome T200, and chrome ForgedTEc - see which is better for me, and then decide if I should special order.

The fitter I've used before has access to two sets of T200 heads... and you have to buy the whole set 4-GW.  So if we can find matching time in the old calendar...

Greetings all. I've been wondering about something and it occurred to me that this forum might be a good place to get an answer.

I'm a decent player with a handicap that ranges from about 0 to 3. However, I do struggle somewhat with iron play relative to my peers at that ability level. I'm thinking about ditching my forged cavity-backs and going game-improvement. I have my eye on a couple different sets but one of the contenders is a combo set consisting of Titleist T-300 longer irons and T-200 short irons.

My questions are: has anyone played the T-200 irons, and, if so, have you had any distance control issues with the short irons? I'm asking because I have played irons with hollow bodied construction before (Genesis by Miura). I loved the increase in speed and distance, but I got rid of them because I would occasionally get these huge jumpers with the short irons where the ball would sail clear over the green. I got to a point to where I felt like I couldn't trust them. I'm wondering if Titleist has figured out a way to eliminate that.

    Thanks!

Out of curiosity - what did you decide?
