cksurfdude
Had a very good range session yesterday ... varied clubs, varied shots, varied targets, took a break between shots, lined up my target each time, etc. and worked on just swinging the clubhead and moving the body and arms with a decent tempo. Hit a bunch of solid shots and regained a lot of the confidence that I'd completely shot to hell last weekend on the course! Also tested out a new club - Tour Edge HL4 #4 iron-wood. Short answer: I love it. Easy to hit, super forgiving and seems to be giving me the exact distance I've been having a gap with in my bag. Very highly recommend testing these to anyone who may not hit their long irons consistently or who's having trouble finding a hybrid they like (Tour Edge offering a $40 / 30 day full refund trial of a #6i-w). fozcycle, revkev and downlowkey 3 Quote WITB of an "aspiring" play-ah ... DrMJG
Would that practice today would have been a tad shorter. I am exhausted. I did once through the bag with Top Tracer. I have not really sat down to look at the numbers, but a few things hit me. Compared to my first use of Top Tracer 18 months ago, vast improvement is shown. Even in the areas I felt were not solid today ( I am talking to you, irons), the results were significantly better. Distance, dispersion, and angles all were much better. Some problems were quite different, My favoring a fade has now moved into a draw. And iron mishits often were what I call an unsigned left turn. Wedges were ok, though not perfect. Best of my three was the 60º. 50º tended to go left. Hybrids were a bit better, though the spheres only rose to 12' in average. Irons were at best ok. Greater distance and more predictable distance. But, on this day, dispersion was very poor. Usually left but one really bad slice zinger on both the 6i and 7i. Onto the Driver. First time attacking the Top Tracer with the G410. Good Distance (195-205) with an Angle loft of 22º. Not sure if that is too much as the club was only added last Monday. The dispersion was about 3-8 feet to the right (I had adjusted for the draw). Of all of the numbers TT gave, these were the ones I watched the most. Height was almost set in stone at 30' and the same for my ball speed at 109. This is WAY up from when I started when I muddled along at 89. Practice, technique and new toy all helped. Now I need to make some adjustments in technique to translate the ball speed into a few more yards. 100 shots over just under 2 hours. That is a LOT for this old body. However, came home and the dog wanted a walk, a LONG walk. I still love him! Stanks
Range sesh today: Stretch a bit. Some light 9 - 3 swings with my 52 degree vokey. Practiced a few with that. Contact was great and all good things. Switched between that and pitching wedge. I rotated 5 or so shots in and out between the two then added the Tour Striker Smart Ball. Unfortunately, my contact was very spotty after. Fat, thin, you name it. When I get warmed up and loose, then my swing gets really loose and long. Crossing the line, flying elbow, etc. My goal in life is to shorten by swing separate my shoulder from my chin, per Monte Scheinblum. THat'll alleviate my lower and upper body sliding. From there, I went to hit driver. Nice light fades and baby draws first few shots. Then I started hitting low and toey strikes. Got mad at myself and closed it out with 25% swings with wedges again. Spotty contact. Goal for next week is 2 ranges sessions and 18 holes. Only swing though is half way back. That actually would equate to pros full back swing. I'm that loosy goosy. fozcycle
DrMJG
Ok, I was a bit lazy today. Last week was a lot of golf swings and I neared the ending of my Maxfli testing. To be honest, many were simply trying out my new toy G410 Plus Driver) and not keeping track of just how many swings I had taken. So, while not achingly sore, I best can describe by shoulders as tired; I can say the same about my legs and hip muscles as well. So, I simply took about 15 minutes this AM to go through the swing at various speeds. I set the timer so I would not go wildly beyond the time I wanted to do. This was primarily being done to keep the muscles active and not create physical problems in the long run. I also concentrated a lot on the plane of the swing as I have been going too far in to out and creating a hook on many of this weeks non-driver shots. This will be the concentration of the week starting with a range session tomorrow and a round on Tuesday. sirchunksalot
For the last couple of weeks, I've let a buddy borrow my F8's to try out before he decided to purchase a set. I got them back today, so I took them out to the range to work on a problem have had for a while, starting my backswing to the inside and coming over the top. First time trying it and the results were decent. Hit quite a few chunks, but was seeing improvement on the shots I hit well. Haven't been able to play in over a month (moving the mother-in-law, weather), so I thought a trip to the range might help scratch the itch.Definitely have some work to do, but at least it was a start. DrMJG
It is amazing how seemingly small adjustments are able to present big results. With my irons 7i, 6i and 9i, I have been drifting left. So today I worked on three minor adjustments. 1) Made sure I had the ball properly spaced in terms if distance from he body and between feet. And I worked to make sure I can get that position 95% of the time. 2) Made sure I addressed the ball in a position to allow me to be much more likely to hit the sweet spot of the club. This includes making sure I am not overly out of good positioning for the loft of the club. 3) Making sure I have a good hip turn with solid follow through towards the target. Looked and felt good in terms of results. All irons had great flights and for the 6i and 7i good roll and with the 9i a really nice drop and stop. I also took some time with the new boom stick, a PING G410+. My ball speed is nearing 120 consistently. While my full drive results were good at 200-210, I was still capable of a great looking drive that ended up closer to 185-190. I have a few things I will try this week. But the one thing the G410+ has given me is growing confidence that I will not be hurt with the driver. Trying to fix may fat/toe strikes. Not sure if it would be better to do lessons or try to fix this myself I purchased strike plan and am considering buying the accuracy plan since the cost is relatively low. I don't know all of the details about NLG, but I have a book called "Better Faster: The Modern Golfer's Blueprint for getting more from less" which has performance tests and troubleshooting that I feel would overlap more with NLG. For the cost, the book provides significantly more material than the strike plan - the only difference is there is obviously no video but I would highly recommend it. Lessons will always be the better solution. I took 5 lessons this season plus 3 sessions with a personal trainer geared to golf fitness. This included a TPI movement assessment as well as measuring power then creating routines I could do at home and in the gym that had elements of strength training, increasing power, as well as functional range of motion and core stability. I am very detail oriented and willing to measure my performance, get feedback, and use these resources for my practice sessions, so it works for me. If you don't have the time or interest to research material, develop plans, and track performance then there will be limited benefit from these resources and in-person or online coaching is the best option. cnosil, fozcycle, edingc and 1 other 4 Quote G425 MAX Driver & 5W Baffler Rail-H 3H-4H 699 Pro Utility V2 - 4i APEX CF19 6-AW INDI Wedges 52, 56, 60 EAS 2.
edingc
Had a good first winter range session yesterday. I haven't finished building my new set just yet, so I only brought along the 7 iron and a 54 degree wedge. I was pretty please with the results, definitely could have shot a decent round with the swing I had. I'm happy to say my pivot/backswing has improved greatly since I really started practicing in March. No more sway. My misses yesterday were on the toe, pretty sure I'm getting a little early extension pulling my arms in and coming across the ball. This was one of my better swings and you can still see my first move in the downswing is to steepen slightly: Have a few things I'm working on in my setup to help fix this, specifically making sure I'm not standing too close to the ball. I don't know why, but until yesterday I never noticed how much I pull my arms/hands in toward my thigh. They hang almost straight down at six o'clock, but if I let them naturally hang they are closer to five o'clock. When I setup that way it feels like I'm a mile away from the ball, but practicing with a few foam balls in the backyard tells me I have a lot more room for my arms to shallow being further away. revkev
On the range today with three mini tour players - one made it to the final stage of Korn Ferry Q school so we are talking guys with serious game. They were warming up to play. The one guy hits drivers off the deck as part of his warmup - pretty impressive.Back to earth I jumped back into the Super Speed game - did a dynamic warm up, hit three drivers, average SS 90, a little slow for me but it was only 3 and with other warm up. Did the level one protocols and hit 3 more -averaged 94. They were warming up to play. The one guy hits drivers off the deck as part of his warmup - pretty impressive. Back to earth I jumped back into the Super Speed game - did a dynamic warm up, hit three drivers, average SS 90, a little slow for me but it was only 3 and with other warm up. Did the level one protocols and hit 3 more -averaged 94. Then hit about a dozen 9, a dozen 8’s, 3 or 4 7 woods and some gap wedges to finish up. I'm jumping back into the SuperSpeed protocol again. My right wrist is better; been sore all summer. We are moving to a new house at the end of the month. In addition to high ceilings in the 3-car garage, there is a room behind the third bay that might be a good exercise room or... hitting bay(?) What will be interesting is that with my recent swing change with Monte Scheinblum, I'm driving the ball further but I haven't check SS yet. I'm just comparing where I'm playing my 2nd shot to where I was a couple of months ago. It's a lot colder when I play now and the body isn't as warm, but I'm probably getting more bounce and roll. Do hard, fast fairways offset cold weather, stiff body and more layers of clothes?? revkev, Rickp, fozcycle and 1 other 4 Quote “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
DrMJG
Well, it was good as I did a morning of final prep for the match tomorrow. 18 holes on a course where I barely break 100! Once quickly through the bag! All clubs showed an improved line of the shots over the hooks that come into play when I go on auto pilot. Being a hooker is the BIG fault in my geezer/hacker technique. I was happy, in particular, with my hybrids and 6i, which will be needed on this course. Wedges were MUCH more on target, especially in the sand trap practice time. The course I am playing has only a few pre-green traps, which are not too deep, and, not too great of a lip in the green traps. I will do my human-limited best to avoid them. The biggest accuracy gain was in my driver. While I did not measure it, my AoA seemed a bit better, longer, lower action with better post re-entry roll. On this course, if you drive straight, you are in a good position to do well on every hole. Will get a bit of pre-round putting in tonight, at home. May Friday's game not be destroyed by my slight overconfidence my technique and clubsood range from a g! edingc
I mentioned in my last update that I "discovered" I've been standing too close to that ball. Today, I pulled out the tripod just to see the difference. This is only from Sunday until today. Sunday - Typical looking backswing from this season. Could never figure out how to get steeper and longer in the backswing, anytime I did, I felt really disconnected. As I posted above, from here I come down really steep on the downswing. Today - Hitting foam balls in 30ish degree weather. Only change is that I've standing farther away from the ball. Lead/left arm is now covering the right shoulder, left shoulder comes up under my chin. Because I'm standing farther away I have more room to swing my hands/arms around my spine instead of inside my spine angle. On the downswing, this is translating to some shallowing and more club speed. Excited to get back out to the range. cnosil, Rickp, sirchunksalot and 1 other 4 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 7.5 / Anti-Cap: 13.0 (Last Updated Feb. 19, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°, -1/N), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. Kenny B
Practice 9-hole round this afternoon. Ball striking was not very good, but my putting was much better. Simply widening my stance gave better control on putts; made a bunch of 4-6 footers. I used to have a wide stance, and I really don't know how my stance got narrower, but I'm glad I'm back to wide. sirchunksalot, cnosil, Rickp and 1 other 4 Quote “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
