mikeanthony
Intro Hello everyone, my name is Mike and I've been a fellow Spy since "officially" in 2020, but like many of us on here had been a long time lurker on the forum ... for it wasn't until the Cobra Connect Challenge during that same summer of 2020, that I became more engaged and active within the form. I am incredibly appreciative of @GolfSpy BOS and the rest of the Mod Team for selecting me to be a part of this review, thank you. At 42yrs young, golf has always been a part of my life ... however there was a 10yr hiatus during my time while in Chicago for 7 years and for 3 years while in Atlanta, where I probably played maybe 7-10 rounds of golf total ... fast forward to 2017 and my move to Charleston, SC and my love for the game has been reignited and feel as though I can't get enough of it. Feel blessed to have a nice work/life balance that allows me to get at times 2 to 3 rounds of golf in a week, and along with that, the work/life aspect allows me to coach for a local h/s team in the area, too. Again, I consider myself to be really lucky at this point in my life. Prior to making the career change at 26yrs old and getting into finance, I was in the golf industry for many years all through h/s, through college, then post college and went through the PGM program and getting through the PAT ... but I got burned out and quit working in the golf industry and somewhat did quit the game as well. But my game, and more specifically my mental game, have been on a heater as of late with 11 of my past 14 rounds having been in the 80s. I'll also admit that I am a tinkerer and I also hate to admit that I do think that the constant tinkering/changing of my clubs over the past few seasons have delayed my progress in getting better. And I'm reeeally curious to see how these new Lamkin UTX grips will hopefully improve my game. I do feel this is probably the norm amongst us golfers, but at the moment, I do not have a full matching set up grips in the bag. And the last time I did have a full set of matching grips were Winn Dri-Tac grips from back in 2018, which coincidentally enough was during a window in time where I was playing some really good golf and even got in a round of 79 with my old TM M1 irons. However, my grips on my clubs now are all over the place. My irons have GP Align Z grips +2 wraps ... my gap wedge has a GP Align +2 wraps ... 55 & 59 wedges have different colored GP Align +2 wraps ... and my woods/hybrids all have some form of GP Velvet 360 and all with different wrap numbers. I will say, that OEMs have their own standard wraps that can vary significantly from OEM to OEM. For example my Cobra 3W grip, while standard, def feels like it has 3 to 4 extra wraps underneath the grip compared to that of my Titleist hyrbids and my PING driver. So much so that I do manipulate my hands through the impact zone and follow-through with my 3W much differently than I do with my driver. All of that to say is that not only are my grips inconsistent from a style standpoint, but they're also inconsistent in the number of wraps underneath, too. With all that said, very excited to give the Lamkin UTX in blue a thorough review and will have them installed across the bag, driver to lob wedge. Plus, the heat and oppressive humidity of Charleston should give these grips a chance to prove how they hold up to sweaty hands. Popular Post mikeanthony
Recently rcvd the Lamkin UTX grips in blue and my initial impressions are positive. The blue with electric yellow color way is just really really sharp. They really are a good looking set of grips. And when I hold them up against the GP Align Z grips on my irons, the Lamkins just appear less busier and has more of a minimalist appearance to them. All subjective of course … the GP Align Zs are good grips and were never a distraction before. Didn’t mention in my intro, but went with midsize grips for this review … my comfort level has always been somewhere in-between standard and midsize grips, and have tried GP’s +4 as well. During my club fittings in the past, all of my fitters have said that I should be using midsize grips based on the measurement from the base of my palm to my middle finger … and to compensate for swing weight with my clubs being 3/4” over standard. Having them installed this week. LeftyMatt89
I got my grips yesterday. I wanted to share some first thoughts on the unboxing. I am getting a fresh bottle of solvent and a new grip roll this Friday. I will post a quick video on how easy or not easy they are to attach onto my clubs. Grip comparisons from the Green UTX Midsize: MCC Midsize (red/black), Lamkin Full Cord (old release), and Mcc Standard Lamkin UTX main standout from the MCC is the cord going throughout the grip. Not just the bottom hand portion, but also the upper hand. On the MCC grip, there are little breaks in the cord and rubber grip instead. From the Lamkin Full Cord old grip, the cord almost looks more but the standout is the technology of the ACE material on the grip under the cord. From the looks of the grip, the UTX should be as grippy or more as all of the different grips I had on hand and feels softer to the touch than the other grips. If there are any questions, I am happy to give more comparisons or pictures.
