How To Regrip With Air Compressor

Recommended Posts

Nice job @GolfSpy_APH !

Regripping is so simple and one of the easiest things you can do yourself.

Love the fact that with air you can reuse the grips. For some reason I still haven't switched over and use solvent/double stick tape. It can be messy and stinky.

I've seen people use air inflators for tires that have specific pressure gauges in case you don't want to buy a compressor.

Nice article Jamie!  I've been using air for at least 10 years and still using Pure grips (have a stockpile).  So easy to change grips, especially to just try out new grips.

Putter grips are more difficult than regular grips, but can be done with care.  The most difficult grips I've encountered when using air are grips with a hard collar, like Winn grips and the leather Best Grips.  The hard collar prevents sealing on the shaft which is necessary to "walk" the grip down the shaft.  Have to be careful and higher pressure needed.

Well I never... I use compressed air to remove grips if I want to save them, but hadn't thought of trying it to install them! Might have to get one of those adaptors, but I'm definitely going to try with one of my existing nozzles first.

Nice article and explanation, Jamie.

Another how to is posted!

As always we love to hear your comments!

Have you tried it? Is this your next go to method?

I re-grip a lot. I am going to try this, I just have to get the compressor attachment. I love doing my own repairs and am going to learn how to retip shafts and want to build my own clubs someday. I've watched a lot of people do it. Now I think it's my turn to try. Thanks for the topic and video!

Agreed, nice article! I also have a small stockpile and have their installation kit. I’m just waiting on my hose for the air compressor and have two sets to re-grip. Really looking forward to trying this out!

I love this method, but something about solvent and such is still great. I have found the odd time a grip will twist however its not often and usually only if its super hot out and I didn't use any tape at all.

This is great, Jamie. I might have missed it, but where did you get the golf grip adapter? I used an air compressor with the pointed nozzle, and that worked fine, but the adapter looks as thought it would be a little easier to handle the grip.

Also, I used tape and solvent as well because I never tried regripping without them. Next month I'm planning to regrip my driver and hybrids, so I can't to try your method.

I switch to the rubber tip when installing grips with hard collars like Best Grips or SuperStrokes with the counterweight tech port. You have to press firmly to make a good seal but it does the job.

Having regripped my clubs for years I will definitely have to give this method a try. Will also have to give Star Grips a try based on this.

Have any major grip manufacturers weighed in on this method vs traditional 2-sided tape and solvent?

I would be a little concerned about slippage due to the heat and humidity of summer around here but a trial is warranted.

Has anyone tried this with a cordless 18v tire inflator with any success?

I have known a few different people who have tried it and it has worked. Just a little more effort.

Thank you! I've been holding off on the inflator as I don't have access to a compressor but need to try different less tapered grips since my bottom hand tends to swell up during the round.

@GolfSpy_APH do you have a link to the air gun and nozzle you used or that you suggest? I have the compressor (Harbor Freight), but would like some ideas around the gun and nozzle.

Also, do you recommend using grip take with this method, or is it not needed? I'm curious about how well the grip stays in place with it, especially on graphite shafts.

Sirs, I’ve been doing this for a few years and every now and then one will twist a bit, but not often.  I’m using the Golfworks regular build up tape (only sticky on one side).  I read somewhere that grips are made with at least a layer of tape in mind to get to design thickness.  I think my tape is 0.014” thickness.  I’ve blown Winn (carefully), Golf Pride, JumboMax (not easy), Star, Lamkin, Royal, and Pure grips on in my quest for the perfect grip.  You just need to be mindful and not stretch things too much.  If things are too tight add a drop or two of solvent.  Don’t set your air pressure too high. It’s part art form with your hand on lower grip end going on and I am no artist, so you have no worries.  I also need more touch around the greens.  If you’re having second thoughts, my son-in-law has me do his clubs and he was leary of twisting as well.

I used masking tape to buff up the lower hand, technically it is not needed. If you are using double sided tape it is equally a pain to get on and solvent is recommended.

I started using the Star grips and use no tape , no solvent and takes about 1 minute to put on , there’s no slippage and they’re a good grip , I change grips at once a year so this way saves me so much time and effort

Hey, I went ahead and tried @GolfSpy_APH’s air compressor technique. The first one was with my Ping G410 4-hybrid. Worked like a charm.

IMG_3744.jpeg.b59932ceca1ccefdfc3e1550128359f9.jpeg

The second one was with my Callaway Rogue ST Max 3-wood. Same grip, but unfortunately, there was slippage between the both ends. I couldn’t get it to settle down, and I’m not sure why. Both are graphite shafts, Adila and Tensei, and it’s the same grip model. So I went with the conventional way—tape and solvent.

IMG_3745.jpeg.b3371adf1858eb20b5794f0ec6588ddb.jpeg

The nice thing about the air compressor technique is that I can try out different grips easily without ruining them. I’ll try both these clubs tomorrow, and if everything goes well, I’m going to try a different grip on my driver and see how that plays.

May help to have a few extra wraps under and someone suggested hairspray! Put a little on prior then blow the grip on and when it dries it will have that little bit of stick.

I wonder what is, if any, ideal psi for this method?

45-60 psi is the general range. Different ppl prefer different settings and the grip type can also play a factor.

For those that have done this without an attachment like the Star Grips device, how did you do it? Did you make something? Did you just plug the nozzle into the hole at the butt end of the grip?

I'm curious to other ways to do this than spending $50 on the Start Grips gun/adapter.

For those that have done this without an attachment like the Star Grips device, how did you do it? Did you make something? Did you just plug the nozzle into the hole at the butt end of the grip?

I'm curious to other ways to do this than spending $50 on the Start Grips gun/adapter.

I've done it before using either one of these attachments that came with my compressor. It's not as easy, but it does work.

Funny enough, I used the ball needle first to get it going and stopped before it’s fully on. Then I switched to the nozzle that @TSauer circled. It’s works. 😄

I wonder if the Star Grips cup attachment would work with the Harbor Freight air gun or device like yours above. I just don't know the sizes of the threaded parts for that attachment to connect to.
