Apex AI200 and 300

I am in the market for new irons. I play a set of very old Calaway X18s currently.  They have been good to be for more than a decade, but I am now over 60 and could use some help with the long irons.  I thought I would give these a go.  in the last few weeks, I have tried pretty much everything I could think of.  Tried to make myself like the Mizunos, Srixon and others.

Was pretty much decided on the Srixon ZX5 MKii.  I think today changed that.

I have tendentious issues, so I wanted to try out a graphite shaft.  All they had was a recoil dart 70 / F4.  Seemed crazy lite but after a few swings I adjusted.  The ai200 was great.  Very forgiving, my swing speed was in the upper 80s with a 7 iron. Carried 165 to 170 with no problem and spin was over 6500 on most shots.  Could draw or fade easily.  Really liked it.  Tried the ai300 next.  It is a rocket launcher. Same swing was carrying 175 easily and when I really tried, I could hit it 180 to 190 but I don't want to swing that hard all the time.  Spin was still upper 6000s and I could still work the ball left and right.

Clubs sounded good, looked good and were extremely forgiving.

I wish I could get picked for the testing of these clubs but either way.  I will most likely end up with a set of these soon.

Just thought I would share.

Greg

sounds good. If you are looking for a new set with one of the goals being better long iron performance, did you look at hybrids? I have found hybrids to be way easier to hit than any long iron out there. Just a suggestion.

Driver: Callaway Epic 9 degree, stiff (set at 10 degrees with the movable weight in the center}

FW: Callaway Epic 3,5, heaven wood w/ regular shaft (driver shaft in 3 wood, 3 wood shaft in 5 wood, 5 wood shaft in heaven wood, all three set at neutral plus 1 degree)

Hybrids: Callaway BB19 4,6,7 (4 set at neutral plus 1 degree and 6 and 7 set at neutral minus 1 degree for gapping purposes)

Irons: Callaway Rogue ST Max 8, 9, PW

Wedges: Titleist Vokey SM6 50,54,58

Ball: Titleist Pro V1, 1X, Vice Pro Plus or anything I find that day and try out for the fun of it (I haven't bought balls with my own money in at least 10 years)

I had a fitting at Club Champion a month or so ago and got the Ai300. I was fortunate as the club head came in the day before. According to my fitter, I was the first person to pick them. I am 30 and have a high swing speed, so I have a 105g Iron shaft. I love the clubs.

One thing to note about these clubs - the lofts are pretty strong. The 4i is a 20 degree loft and my 3H is 19 degrees. You do get some extra distance because of the lofts, but if you are happy with the spin and feel, then it doesn't matter. For instance, the TaylorMade Qi 5i is 23.5 degrees and the Apex Ai300 5i is 22 degrees. That's a pretty big difference. You may need to consider your gapping - I needed to add another wedge when I made the switch to my new irons.

Regardless, these rock. They're fantastic clubs and I couldn't be happier. I definitely think they are "ceiling" irons.

That's my concern with modern irons.

Even if the super strong lofts work really well,
I find that they make set configuration more difficult.

Instead of stronger lofts,
I'd like to see the modern new tech incorporated with wider, 5° loft gapping.
That, for me at least, would make configuring the whole set a lot easier.

Some say that the modern tech doesn't work with weaker lofts, but that makes no sense.
They're still making high loft clubs.  They've just changed what's  stamped on their soles.

I got my set last week from Callaway. I got pw- 7i in the ai200 and 5-6 in the ai300.
I got the recoil dart shafts. Love them. My 7 iron went from 155 carry to 170. My 5 iron went from a shank into the woods to a high fade 210 yards.
