Played a round today with a regular partner, and we were paired up with another twosome we haven't played with before.

Weather here was another picture-perfect day, although we really need some rain, as the ground is very dry and hard, although the fairways had increased roll due to this.

A tale of 2 nines, as we followed a fivesome, although they did not hold up the course too bad on the front. I played extremely well on the front, but the back nine approach shots were purposely hit short to keep pace of play moving, as the fivesome was also being held up by a slower group in front of them.

Best shots of the day for me came on the same hole, a 350 yard par 4. Long drive of 292 yards, aided by some roll, and then a pitch from 48 yards to the flag to 3 feet, and made the birdie putt.

Short game saved me some strokes on my missed GIR's, so all in all a good day for me.

Oh my goodness, what a day. I'll have pics to post after going through them (they're on my main camera, not my phone).  We celebrated by buddy's birthday by playing a truly stunning links course out by the ocean in Ventura, CA, joined by @Billy The Kid Rogers and @Syks7

I shot a 77, going even-par on the front 9, got into a bit of sloppiness to start the back (+4 thru first 3 on that side), but pulled it together and even birdied the 18th par 5.

But the (!) moment of the day came on the third hole. Hit an absolute peach of a drive, not hugely long (250-ish), but perfectly placed and I had 104 to the pin. I hit my (overly-practiced, maybe) 3/4 48° 100-yard shot, which arced slightly right-to-left, landed 4 feet from the pin, bounced once, and disappeared into the hole for an eagle (my third ever) and a net-albatross!

I acted like I was on a Good Good video and started running around and high-fiving everyone.

Easily one of the (if not THE) best moments I've ever had on the golf course.

Anyway, I also managed to net-birdie 5 of the 8 holes I got a stroke on, which was pretty incredible.

All-in-all, a spectacular day on the (literal) links.

Last day of the league championship. I was already behind so I decided to roll the dice and go aggressive and wide open. First hole hit a rope hook hit a tree and went into the lake. Ended up triple. 4th hole tried a shot to clear the swamp in 2 when I should not have dunked it and took double. Course was wet but not CPO but not much roll. I settled down after the 5th and went back to playing like I had some sense to salvage the round. It was tough enough to try to play with some sense as it was. Basically it was not my week. I got cut on both birdies on the birdie pool. I had closest to the pin on 15 but the last player in the last group edged me by a foot. Money wise a little productive I did get 2 birdies for $66 total Tuesday. BTE a 20 handicapper won the tournament. Some of the guys were grumbling the usual about high handicappers. Me I shrugged it off as in I did not play well enough to win. Shooting even par net is not going to cut it in these events.

Didn't have quite the day that @GolfSpy SAM had but I did get to witness the eagle from about 30 feet off the green.  It hit and I thought, "oh man that's gonna be good" then it dropped.  Wild!  It's been a long time since I've seen a holeout from range.

For me -- I was wildly inconsistent, overly aggressive trying to get back into it, and just a bit unlucky.  I found some truly atrocious lies off the fairway with admittedly poor shots.  I'm talking ball finds its way into the base of a clump of grass or bush type of stuff.   On the plus side I hit some really great shots and knocked down some long range putts.  It wasn't enough to overcome 5 doubles and a triple, but it kept it from getting truly out of control.  Onto the next round.

Pretty straight forward round.  Couple of nice up and downs...hit a tree on Par 5, 6th....over to 1 fairway, played down the rest and had 135 in over some trees....got unlucky that my approach stuck on the fringe on the newly watered greens....same thing happened to me on 16....approach from 175 and it stuck right next to the sprinkler head and I yipped my chip 8 feet past.  Back to back birdies on the back helped.  IMG_6075.jpg.48152e1337c22f9c034d0fe883b7588c.jpgIMG_6076.PNG.7aa18a7583c050d9bd7dbf200bda886b.PNG

best word to describe the round .... yikes

What a good reminder that this game is hard and that I can't take anything for granted.

A pretty difficult course where you need to get off the tee well. Tree/forest lined fairways every hole. Greens were in good shape. Consistent and smooth surface and speed throughout the course ... love that.

I was happy with club selections off the tee (only 4 holes w/ my driver), but a bad swing or poor low point hurt ... probably only 4 tee shots that went really really poor. The rest weren't bad and playable.

But iron play was inconsistent at best, like hitting waaay off the toe on a 9iron from the fairway....twice. Missing a start line waaaay left with a flushed PW to result in a penalty. 2 penalties taken on shots into the green from clean lies ...not super ideal.

Some good ones in there, 9iron and 7 iron shots within 10 feet

Chipping wasn't great, 2 of the 14 were atrocious and missed the green ... not ideal, but everything else gave me solid looks at 1 putts

Putting was good, but only 1 dropped. Was just off on nearly every hole, but easy tap ins

================

Oh well. Learn and move on. Still a fun day out on the course despite the less than ideal score for me

This round ....

I used to play in a league at this course, but that league died with COVID, so I hardly get back. This is my first round there in almost two years, and it's almost like I never left. There are quite a number of trees gone that affected play, and the bunkers have better sand than I ever remembered, but the greens are the same. The greens here are large but pretty severe. They keep them pretty slow or people would be rolling off them all of the time. (This is the course where I picked up my name from some other ancient golf forums, "My Greens Stimp at 2"). They're not actually 2, but they keep them about 7-8. My muscle memory definitely remembered putting here! Even at the slow speed these break as much as anywhere I've ever played. Surprisingly played in right at 4 hours, despite starting behind two outings.

What can I say, it was a beautiful day!

I had much higher hopes for my score though.  I hung on pretty well for the front 9 and was 2 under my handicap at the turn.  The groove kept up until  hole 13, then it all fell apart.  The worst was dunking two balls into the lake on #16, then two strokes to get out of the bunker for a total of 9 on a par 3.  Still, looks to be the best I've done on this or any arrangement of the three 9-holes here.  Not as well as I'd hoped, but will be an improvement on my card.

Three things I'm hoping to learn from this round.  Irons are my friend, woods are usually a trap, especially on shorter holes.

Keep weight forward.  I know, it's basic.  But, I tend to forget especially as I get tired and try to stay balanced on both feet.  Getting better at it, especially with chipping.

Let the club do the work.  When I get tired I tend to try to force things too much, leading to casting, falling behind and many fat shots. Generally not good, but terrible when trying to pitch over water or get out of sand.  Then it's fatal.

When looking at this scorecard, the order of courses is reversed, with Red being first, but assigned the back 9 on The Grint.
