cksurfdude
This was a few weeks ago .. on a nice day that our regular course was closed my wife and I decided to head down to the South Shore of Long Island to an 18-hole Par 3, inside a state park by the beach. It's at the west end of a barrier island .. part of Fire Island National Seashore, actually .. between the ocean and the Great South Bay on the inside. ^ Par 3 course is just to the left of where it says "Robert Moses Field 2" The course can be a bit, well, scruffy in places and the greens are bumpy and slow but it's such a fun and unique golfing spot - and really great wedge target practice with holes ranging from 60-100 yds; most in the 70-85 yd range. Typically, as there was on this day, there's an onshore breeze coming in off the ocean so as the course meanders around the wind is coming at you from different directions. And it's only $8 for Seniors! ... you're not taking my picture, are you? ... view of #18 green and #10 tee and hole on the way in ... ... Hole #1 ~90 yds - that sign should be on every golf course everywhere ... ... #3 about 95 yds with wind from the left and dunes in the background ... ... we were joined by the lone maintenance/ground crew guy .. and a Coast Guard helo cruising the coastline ... ... more natural beauty on the course ... ... a few of the local denizens browsing around ... (Yes in the warmer months you need tick protection, plus stay away from anything green as there is tons of poison ivy among all the bushes!) ... there's a tug and barge docking area on the inlet side ... ... view of the longer causeway coming in; there's a second, short drawbridge (to the right out of the frame) that replaced what used to be barge service to cross ... -- this hole is actually the single Par 4 on the course; lost the pic but you can try to shortcut the dogleg right going over the scrub pines and bushes (and poison ivy and ticks ) .. my ball got pushed a bit by the wind and was long-left off the green. ... each hole has a bench with a marker plaque ... ... view towards the clubhouse ... ... action shot on #8 - there's a bit of a swale going down and then back up between the tee and the green ... ... putting on #9 .. that's my orange ball in the foreground (did not make the birdie putt!) ... ... always obey all signage ... ... and the 100 yd #18 is the most exposed to the wind (from the front-left) ... Have played another funky little but also lotta fun 9 hole Par 3 a little further East from Riverhead, on the North Fork, called The Cedars. StrokerAce
Played a quintessential New England golf course in Paxton MA (west of Worcester MA) on a beautiful blue spring day... There were multiple families of geese all with little ones and they were letting me know when I got a little too close... This is one of the hardest shots for me. 210 to the flag and a forced carry over water. I hit a good one and went about 15 feet beyond the pin but these shots always make me nervous. One of the hardest par 3's I've played in New England. Uphill all the way. 205 to carry the bunker. 211 to the pin. I've hit everything from 6i (wind behind) to choked-down driver (wind in my face). Ended up in the bunker in front on this day. One of my favorite golf course photos I've ever taken. This course is very picturesque. If it was anywhere near Boston it'd be exclusively private. There are a few holes like this with big ski style slopes in front of the green which makes club selection difficult. You can't see it but this is about a 60 foot drop. cksurfdude
Got a chance to play this incredibly beautiful and very challenging - 69.0/130 from the White tees @ 5466 yds! - private course near me. I have always imagined those courses to be quite difficult. loved it. we played the tips and I didn't find it too difficult. the water sneaks in to the fairway a bit more than you expect on certain holes and you have be aware of it. my best round was at plantation. you need to be a good ball striker out there. the holes are long and the greens are tough - fast with subtle breaks that you can't see from behind the hole. bunkers were big but the sand was pure and easy to hit out of. it's well worth a trip. 3 very nice courses and relatively affordable. cksurfdude and sirchunksalot 2 Quote Driver- Cobra Aerojet LS Woods- Cobra LTD 3w 15*, 5W 19*, F9 24* Irons- XXIO X (6-A) Wedges- Callaway Jaws Raw (54/58) Putter- Bettinardi BB56 Ball- Maxfli Tour X Buggy- Motocaddy M7 GPS Remote Electric Caddy Bag- Motocaddy Dry-Series Proudly testing for 2024:
